“Which birds do you have hanging outside your window?” Emory asked curiously. “I take it it’s not the pretty sounding ones?”

“What birds do you have outside of yours? None of them sounds pretty. Especially the ones that tweet outside your window the moment the sun comes up.”

Neslyn gave the man a look after he called her Nessie. “You’re so full of it, Caleb.” The blonde shook her head, staring down at the mess. “How did this even happen?” She moved to grab a broom before pausing, “Don’t even think for one second that I’m going to help clean this up.”

Caleb, who had managed to keep a semi-serious face through this, finally cracked and started laughing. “I might be full of it, but it is a true statement. I do like that shirt.” He grabbed the broom that she gave to him. “Well you see, I was trying to grab that box right here, but it was slightly out of reach. I don’t know where the step ladder is and I didn’t want to stand on a chair in case I fell, so I jumped. And as I jumped I hit this other shelf that apparently was not as secured as I thought, and well...” Caleb gestured around him. “This happened.”

Ran away from home at 16, spent 4 years on the streets of New Orleans

Got a job at Noel’s Vintage in Bayonne neighbourhood, where the owner Noel gave him a place to stay and helped Caleb put his life back in order

His family was not supportive of him. He has rekindled a relationship with a few of his siblings (he’s the youngest of 5), but for the most part, does not talk to his family much.

Has lived in Hallow Grove for about 10 years (since March 2009)

Likes animals (grew up on a farm) but is just a bit too irresponsible to own one himself

Was quite the partier back in the day (especially while he was on the streets). Thinks he’s a little too old for raves now but still goes on occasion.

Smokes cigarettes on occasion. Has tried to quit in the past, but has mostly just succeeded in dialing back how much he does smoke

Got his G.E.D eventually and has taken a few business classes at Toulouse U, but for the most part is uneducated. (He doesn’t hold much stock in book learning. Very “school of life” kind of person)

Special talent for getting into interesting situations. (Ask him about the duck that trapped him on the roof of a car)

She opened her mouth to speak, but Neslyn pressed her lips in a thin line. Exhaling slowly as the blonde shook her head. “Sorry, no.”

“Should have known you’re smarter than that Nessie.” Caleb looked around him at the mess, and then back to Neslyn. “Has anyone told you that you look absolutely gorgeous today? That colour really brings out your eyes.”

“Do you ever just find yourself incredibly sad? Like you are sitting there minding your own business, and then out of nowhere you just want to cry. Like your mom just died, or you dog is missing, or you just saw something horrible on the news like a mass murder.”

Caleb nodded, “Used to happen a lot more than it does now, but I know exactly what you mean. I used to have some ... less than good ways of coping, but talking about it is more helpful I’ve learned.”
