The Steno Place

I finished 3 different exercises today. I learned about inversion and long vowels. A E I O U. It’s kind of weird using multiple keys, but after typing “a a a a a a a a e e e e e e e e i i i i i i i i o o o o o o o o u u u u u u u u” a bunch, my brain got used to it. The letter “A” uses only the “A” key on the left side, plus the two on the right. The opposite is “U”, which uses only the “U” key on the right side, plus the two on the left. “E” uses A+O+E. It uses 3 keys like A and U, but starts from the left and goes from there 3 keys straight over. “I” uses all 4, so that’s easy. And “O” uses the middle 2 keys: also easy.

It’s a whole lot nicer to be passing lessons than it is to be stuck on Lesson 1.

I’m at an amazing 3 WPM on unstressed vowel words.

Aaaand I’m back! Plus I’m moving up in the world. More lessons down.

Me, after I scored my test today and compared it to my previous best. Now it’ll only take me 1,728 hours to re-type “War and Peace”.

But I’m back. So, to all of you out there who are trying steno and not practicing...get back with it! Keep at it!

But as a result of all that practice, I hit 20.2 WPM on my standard test!

Dropped down to 15 WPM today. Maybe had an off day, maybe just learning keyboard more and not looking as much.

The # of words I’ve typed in steno so far.

I seem to be improving at 2-4 WPM per day. At this rate I’ll be at 100 WPM within a month!

Did this exercise today and hit 14 WPM. I’ve got the keyboard mostly memorized now. Hooray for not looking down!

That’s how much of the keyboard I have memorized.

I’m optimistic.

I’m using a Mac running Mavericks. Had to use these instructions and get around System Preferences in order to get Plover working.

It’s wonderful to type in an era of openness. Steno machines cost thousands of dollars and most software is proprietary. But Plover software is free, and my Sidewinder X4 keyboard (one of the last ones made) was only $80. Not bad.

I’ll be using this site to learn steno.
