Heyo it’s back to school time and here’s a research tip from your friendly neighborhood academic librarian. When searching for any topic on the internet just type in the word ‘libguide’ after your topic and tada like magic there will be several beautifully curated lists of books, journals, articles, or other resources dealing with your subject. Librarians create these guides to help with folks’ informational needs, so please go find one and make a librarian happy today!!
this is the BEST advice, and there are so many options, both if you’re doing academic research, or just curious and looking for information!
It’s so interesting what you can find!
Dime novels, mystery & detective fiction, adulting (not academic, but still), D&D guide, citation libguides, comics, graphic novels, and manga, German language & literature, differentiating fake news, firefighting, body autonomy for kids and young adults, interfaith women advocates for social justice, cooking (nonacademic)/food culture and cuisine/food & cooking.
Thank you for excellent additions and very much agre ewith you that cooking libguides are the best!! Have you seen all the ones from the Culinary Institute of America??
Oh! Building on your notes I figured I should mention to everyone that most academic institutions with a library are going to have a page with the research guides the librarians have made for their patrons. This will include basic topic guides on things like how to use the library or how to create citations. There will also be subject guides for areas of study like philosophy or biology. As well as specific course guides to assist classes that are being taught like FM 114: Introduction to the Fashion Industry or BME6938: Nanoparticle Nanomedicines.
If any of y’all have started university totally check out the ones your librarians have put up! There’s a ton up to help you along your research journey. And if you aren’t at university check them out too!! Some of the resources won’t be accessible but there’s loads of information you’ll still be able to use and get to.
Hello, fellow academic librarian specializing in instruction! Many libraries also include guides orientations on how to properly utilize non-subject specific databases. Watch those before diving into your first research project so you understand the tools and features available to you to make your life easier. Many universities subscribe to ProQuest or EBSCO and there are MANY tutorials that will teach you how to use them in less than 5 mins.
Believe me, you will save yourself A LOT of headache with both LibGuides and orientations. Good luck and happy hunting!
For general graphics: use GIMP
For vector graphics: use Inkscape
For drawing and illustration: use Krita
For print and web publishing and design: use Penpot
For PDF authoring: use LibreOffice
For PDF reading and form filling: use Okular
All are free, open source and cross-platform. None use AI.
random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google
I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.
also a waaayyyyy better sense of design than duckduckgo
also private, European based, least annoying search I've used lately (RIP old "don't be evil" Google)
i have one of those, scraped from multiple different rec posts:
Search Engines
Infinity Search is an alternative search engine with a special focus on privacy
DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine for those who value their privacy and are put off by the thought of their every query being tracked and logged. Uses bangs, ![site] for in-page search (sells your data to microsoft and draws from fucking bing)
WolframAlpha is a privately owned search engine that allows you to “compute expert-level answers using Wolfram’s breakthrough algorithms, knowledgebase, and AI technology.” A data search engine.
Boardreader is a search engine for forums and message boards. It allows you to search forums and then filter down results by date and language.
Based in France, Qwant is a privacy-based search engine that won’t record your searches or use your personal details for advertising. Uses “&” as a bang search.
Another privacy-based search engine is Search Encrypt, which uses local encryption to ensure that users’ identifiable information cannot be tracked. Metasearch across multiple engines.
Offering unbiased results from several sources, SearX is a metasearch engine that aims to present a free, decentralized view of the internet. Can be self-hosted.
Gibiru’s tagline is “Unfiltered private search” and that’s exactly what it offers. Requires AnonymoX Firefox add-on for privacy.
Disconnect allows you to conduct anonymous searches through a search engine of your choice.
Swisscows provides fully encrypted searches to protect your privacy and security. Built-in violence/porn filter cannot be overridden.
MetaGer offers “Privacy Protected Search & Find” through its anonymised search. A plugin will allow it to be made a default.
Gigablast is a private search engine that indexes millions of websites and servers real-time information without tracking your data, keeping you hidden from marketers and spammers. Variety of filtration and refinement options for searching.
Oscobo is a search engine that protects your privacy while you search the web. By not using any third-party tools or scripts, your data is protected from hacking and misuse. Has a Chrome extension to allow use in toolbar.
https://search.marginalia.nu/ an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed. Use old-school searching rather than query-based for the best results.
https://www.mojeek.com/
https://wiby.me/ - It’s goal is to index as many personalized websites as possible, and NOT commercial sites.
https://4get.ca/ it works a lot like SearX, but honestly better. It doesn’t have its own index, but pulls from many others. I think it’s the best for research, since it allows you to search for answers from different indexes, is easy to configure, add free, and avoids censorship as much as it can.
https://www.searchenginemap.com/ for more on how search engines relate to each other.
https://yep.com/ is a crawler
https://www.etools.ch/ retrieves from Google, Mojeek, Bing, and Yandex, like Searx
https://www.dogpile.com/
https://searxng.org/ (next gen Searx)
https://luxxle.com/ - possibly conservative?
https://presearch.com/ - good for academic?
https://kagi.com/smallweb - free/randomised Kagi.
Other Searchers
www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.
www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.
https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.
www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.
http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.
www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.
www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free.https://cosine.club/ is an electronic music similarity search engine

how life feels when you want video essays that aren’t just plot/wikipedia summaries and are made by people who have read at least one book in the last decade
tumblr user wizard0rb's video essay choice awards:
(note: i'm using the term "video essay" to broadly refer to long form videos on youtube. not all of these are essays)
The Other Half of the West (A Travelogue) - Noah Caldwell-Gervais
This one goes at the top of the list in the hopes that you read it first, it sticks in your mind the most, and you watch it in full. Genuine contender for greatest piece of long form content on Youtube. Noah makes videos about games as well, but this is his best work imo.
Metal Gear Solid 4 was a Mistake - Steak Bentley
The definitive take on an absolutely insane piece of fiction. Funny enough that you can enjoy it even if you don't know anything about MGS. Steak Bentley is genuinely one of the best to ever do it.
THE PISS SAGA | Short Documentary - Derek Milton
A brief investigative documentary concerning the bottles of human piss that keep mysteriously appearing on an electrical box in California.
who firebombed friendlyjordies? - friendlyjordies
0% clickbait- someone firebombed Australian Youtuber friendlyjordies' house, and this is the video he made trying to figure out who did it.
The Tyler Perry Video - F.D Signifier
I was struggling to pick a single FD video for this list (because they're all so good), so I went with his most recent one. Go watch this video and then go watch all his other videos.
a normal creepypasta retrospective - hazel
An exceptionally good retrospective on some interesting creepypastas like The Peeker, Gabbit Rabbits, ShareThis, etc.
The Unreality of Pro Wrestling: FINISH THE STORY - Super Eyepatch Wolf
I wasn't originally going to put an Eyepatch Wolf video on here, for the same reason there's no hbomberguy or Defunctland- I feel like most people are already familiar with his stuff. But this video made me go from not giving a fuck about pro wrestling at all, to being deeply invested in a fight between 2 dudes I had previously never heard of, so it makes the list.
NEED FOR SPEED - A Brief History - Noodle
I want you to close your eyes and enter the Theatre of the Mind with me. Imagine, if you will, a reality in which Sequelitis was extremely good, and also made by someone else. Now open your eyes. You were so powerful that you brought that vision back with you into the material world.
The search for the saddest punt in the world | Chart Party - Secret Base
Jon Bois of 17776 fame once again making compelling football media that is accessible to the layman.
Art in the Pre-Apocalypse - Jacob Geller
My favorite video from a channel that pretty much never makes bad videos, Jacob Geller talks about living at the cusp of the end of the world. And also Final Fantasy
BONUS SINCE I'M HERE: OTHER NOTABLE YOUTUBE VIDEOS I ENJOY
these are just some youtube videos i like. no description because i think you should experience them without pretense
Badass swords AND grim reapers.
how to make pickle pepsi at home for free
Homemade dinosaur documentary
When the lights go out at night #shorts #viral
Drinking Orange Crush
Hermeto Pascoal - Música da Lagoa (Sinfonia do Alto Ribeira, 1985)
Center Core Never More
Lil’ Slimer - Online Video
My Movie

When you play games in your dreams, you don't use a controller, do you?
Here’s a compilation of all the spin-off games I could find, and a bunch of other stuff you may find useful. I don’t plan on updating this too frequently, although these links should be stable.
DISCLAIMER
Before you start clicking links, open up the Megathread and follow the Recommended steps. And of course, don’t go downloading anything you don’t already own, because you wouldn’t download a car.
Games I have played and recommend and games that are widely recommended online are marked with a ♥.
Games that can be played on a web-browser (on PC) are marked with a ⭐️.
With all of that out of the way, games below the cut:

Pokémon: Untamed DEMO [pokecommunity]
———[emulators & CFM]———
If it exists, it’s here. Use an adblocker.
Are you completely new to emulation? If so, I regret to inform you that emulation is almost never a simple as just dumping your game and an having an emulator; you need to dump the BIOS files from legit hardware. Poke around on the emugen wiki and you’ll find what you need to get legit BIOS.
Do you have original hardware, but thanks to Nintendo’s godawful practices you can’t get games or use it much anymore? Consider installing custom firmware on your 3DS, Wii U, Vita, Wii, or Switch.
———[other franchise recommendations]———
If you like Pokémon, consider trying some of these as well.
DIGIMON
I don’t have much experience with the Digimon franchise, but from what I’ve read, this series is ideal for people who enjoy nuzlockes and challenge runs. Subject matter seems to be darker on the whole, comparable to what you get from BW/B2W2 or the Genius Sonority games on average. Take that with a grain of salt, though. Digimon is a turn-based creature collector JRPG.
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth [link] ♥
Digimon Story: Next Order [link]
YOKAI WATCH
I’ve played a little Yokai Watch. It’s a cute little monster collecting franchise that would be ideal if you want an easy and lighthearted game to play. It’s not ideal for players looking for a challenge, though, which is why I put it down. Yokai Watch is a turn-based, minigame heavy, creature collector JRPG.
I love Wrath of the White Witch in particular. Ni no Kuni games have strange combat systems, but you pick it up quick. The difficulty and subject matter are, again, comparable to BW/B2W2 or the Genius Sonority games. Ni no Kuni is a turn-based creature collector JRPG with some RTS elements.
The biggest selling point of Ni no Kuni is that its animated sequences and character design were done by Studio Ghibli and its score by Joe Hisaishi; playing Ni no Kuni is probably as close to living in a Ghibli film as you can get.
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch [link 1] [link 2; remastered edition] ♥
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom [link]
ETRIAN ODESSEY
I don’t have much experience with the mainline Etrian Odyssey games, but I’ve completed both of the Persona Q games and by all rights they play quite similarly. Etrian Odyssey is a dungeon crawler JRPG.
Etrian Odyssey is ideal for people who really like Mystery Dungeon; it even got an actual Mystery Dungeon tie in. Although these games are labeled 1-5, you don’t need to play them in order.
Etrian Odyssey [link] ⭐️
Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Laagard [link] ⭐️
Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City [link] ⭐️
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan [link]
Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth [link] ♥
Etrian Odyssey Nexus [link] ♥
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl [link]
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight [link] ♥
Etrian Mystery Dungeon [link]
SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI
If you want to play a Pokémon game where your Pokémon learn more than four moves, all battles are doubles, and the difficulty is turned all the way up, you may enjoy mainline SMT. Out of all the Pokémon games, the ones which play most like the average mainline SMT game are Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, so people who enjoy those games may enjoy mainline SMT.
Warning! SMT games are much darker than Pokémon! They often contain violence, nudity, and other subject matter only appropriate for mature audiences.
—MAIN SERIES
If you prefer mainline Pokémon, care more about gameplay than story, and you are sane, you should start with either SMT:IV (not IVa!) or SMT:V (either base or vengeance is fine)— I would recommend V if you want a challenging but fair game, and IV if you’re ready to jump to hard mode.
If you prefer mainline Pokémon, care more about gameplay than story, and you are not sane, you should start with either SMT:III Nocturne or SMT: Strange Journey (base or redux). These games are generally considered some of the most difficult in the franchise. They’re fun games, but I can’t in good conscience recommend you start here unless you’re ready for the pain. In which case, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei [link; eng patch]
Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II [link; eng patch]
If you prefer the newer Legends games to the mainline games, you might enjoy the Raidou games. Unlike most SMT games, it’s better play to the games in order— Soulless Army comes first. I don’t have much experience with Soul Hackers, but I think this holds true for those games, too.
——SOUL HACKERS
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers [link]
Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers 2 [link]
——RAIDOU KUZUNOHA
Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army [link] ♥
Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abbadon [link]
Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army [link]
—PERSONA
If you enjoy mainline Pokémon, but you want a longer campaign, more characters, and social sim mechanics, you might enjoy Persona. I recommend you start with Persona 4 Golden if you want to get the typical Persona experience. All of the Persona games— with the notable exception of the Persona 2 duology, which starts with Innocent Sin— do not need to be played in order. They also have a stupid number of rereleases and spin offs of their own.
——OLDSONA
Persona [link] ⭐️
Persona 2: Innocent Sin [link] ♥ ⭐️
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment [link; eng patch] ♥
——NEWSONA
Persona 3 [link] / FES [link] ♥ / Portable [link] ♥ ⭐️ / Reload [not out yet bc fn denuvo]
Persona 4 [link] ♥ / Golden [link]
Persona 5 [link] / Royal [link] ♥
—DEVIL SURVIVOR
If you’re already familiar with mainline SMT, give Digital Devil Saga or Devil Survivor a try. I think they are quite underrated. Digital Devil Saga plays like a mainline game, while Devil Survivor has more RTS elements.
Devil Survivor [link] ⭐️ / Overclocked [link] ♥
Devil Survivor 2 [link] ⭐️ / Record Breaker [link]
—DIGITAL DEVIL SAGA
Digital Devil Saga [link] ♥
Digital Devil Saga 2 [link]
If anyone cares, I’m pulling most links from the same specific website bc it’s been around since 97. Might be slow, but I’ll be damned if it ever goes down. Also, there is an official ENG release for P2:EP, but you’ll get more content using a patched version; you can’t transfer save data or play Tatsuya’s Scenario if you play the PSX version.

unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service
(hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
I’m sorry friends, but “just google it” is no longer viable advice. What are we even telling people to do anymore, go try to google useful info and the first three pages are just ads for products that might be the exact opposite of what the person is trying to find but The Algorithm thinks the words are related enough? And if it’s not ads it’s just sponsored websites filled with listicles, just pages and pages of “TOP FIFTEEN [thing you googled] IMAGINED AS DISNEY PRINCESSES” like… what are we even doing anymore, google? I can no longer use you as shorthand for people doing real and actual helpful research on their own.

So, official support for Windows 10 ends on October 14th 2025. But Microsoft apparently lost a court case and now they have to offer an extra year of security updates--which was an option previously only available to their Business customers--to everyone. But you have to manually enroll. If you want to know how to do it, go to the link below
As the end of official support for Windows 10 approaches on October 14, 2025, many users are seeking ways to maintain their system's securit
You've got to do it before October 14th if you want the extra year. Otherwise support will end for you and you'll probably have to "upgrade" to Windows 11.

hey here's a website for downloading any video or image from any website.
works w/ youtube, soundcloud, twitch, twitter (gifs and videos), tumblr (video and audio), and most other websites you're probably lookin to download stuff off of.
for anyone wondering about privacy and whatnot, i'm happy to say that the developers are pretty committed to have 0 trackers and 0 data retention. you can read more in their "about" section, but here's the basic important stuff:
