Her death broke my heart, but I was not Sandra Bland. I am not at risk in the way she was and I will never know that pain. You are not all Orlando. Rainbow hearts and hashtags don't show support and solidarity if we don't share the same hurt. If you are a straight person, I urge you to refrain from what is easy and show your support by calling out hate speech when you are in the presence of ignorance. Reject gun violence as a given in our country. Recognize an American hate crime for what it is and refrain from making scapegoats out of Muslims in this country. As gay people, we have always had to refrain from what is easy. We have had to show strength when we haven't felt strong and I would like to ask the same of you. I would like to ask more of you than a hashtag. There is blood on the hands of the hateful as well as politicians who are so blatantly propped up by guns. While we are not all Orlando, we are all Americans and we are faced with an enormous decision ahead. For those of us who have the power to think for ourselves, I plead for us all to come together in November to put an end to a hateful and truly disgusting candidate whose policies and rhetoric will ensure that this tragedy happens again and again and again. To my fellow LGBTQs, I love you and I'm so sorry. Our voices are louder.
