Whoever said long nights and early mornings were fun clearly didn't know what they were talking about. Cloud yawned for the umpteenth time this morning. At least he had his coffee...?
He thought back to the few other times he was awake early enough to see the sun come up. âDonât worry about it. If you wonder about something, itâs not unnecessary.â
"Itâs not exactly beautiful. Before I came to Mirabili, it was easier to see the clouds go all pink and purple. Now, itâs an orange ball rising through smog and haze. Still pretty, I think." Zack nodded, almost to himself. "Just not what youâre used to, I bet." He turned slightly towards the blond. "I hear youâre from out of this place, right? Why did you move here? Itâs a wasteland, yâknow."
He didnât dare say why he himself had decide to move to the godless city. Soldiers were children taken from homes and molded into killing machines. Some with mutations. Here they were, young men leaving happy lives behind to have a part in some âgreater goodâ.
Cloud turned, looking over at the other male with a frown. He doubted anyone really chose to be here. But then again, it wasn't like he really had a home to go back to-- somehow he ended up here.
"...I can see that."
He let out a breath quietly. "I didn't really have any other place to go. At least I get paid working here." And sometimes putting up with nosy coworkers.
Izaya shrugged, abruptly bored. Â He could tell that the (slightly) newer soldier wasnât inclined to speak, which would make him a pretty bad conversational partner. Â Even considering the number of Izayaâs conversations that wound up being blatantly one-sided, this one was shaping up to be pretty dull.
"No, just wanted to meet you. Â Fresh blood, you know." Â Possibly literally.
Cloud turned to face the other properly.
"You're not very friendly, you know."
He couldn't help being blunt. The other male had been so up in down in his attitude towards him that he found it rather annoying. How do you become friends with someone who only really sees you as entertainment? He was sure to encounter the other often-- well, they were both soldiers-- but he didn't really want to if the other was going to be so... toying.
The kid reminded him of Mikado, in a wayâexcept, of course, that Mikado was far less nervous and awkward than heâd initially seemed to be. Â So much the better. Â He could only hope that this one had hidden depths as wellâtrying to make small talk with someone who might as well have been a brick wall was not his idea of fun.
"I suppose you could say that," Izaya said, more because he wanted to than because the answer was debatable. Â Heâd been there for maybe a day longer than the soldier he was speaking with, after all.
Cloud gave a little frown at the ambiguous answer. The other had seemed so much like he wanted to talk yet responded to him in such a flippant way? Cloud couldn't help being a little confused. He cleared his throat a little and shook his head. Sometimes, he felt, people were difficult.
"Is there... anything in particular you needed me for then?"
Cutting straight to the point was best then, he figured. He wasn't much in the mood for entertaining today.

Zack was pleasantly surprised to get an actual response from his reluctant companion, albeit disappointed he wasnât getting to hear the blondâs life story. You win some, you lose some, he supposed. âYeah. Thatâs the main reason I came early. Itâs kinda awful, sitting here, staring at nothing. Itâs not exciting to stand around and wait.â
"Itâs funny, though. I remember when I spent my first night out here. I was so scared, manâŠItâs nice to see they gave my old routine to someone a little less jumpy. Thanks to you, I get to watch the sunrise."
"The... sunrise?"
Cloud couldn't hide his confusion. In such a dark and gloomy place, could you really see the sunrise? He looked out onto the night, the skies weren't clear at the moment, but he felt like even if they were, he wouldn't feel the warmth of the sunrise-- it was like this place sucked the warmth right out of it. He couldn't blame his environment though, he guessed that living off of survival instincts didn't really leave time to sit and appreciate the beauty of nature.
"Is it... nice?"
He felt like he was asking as though he had never seen the sun before-- light it was a foreign thing. Of course, it wasn't, but he had had a sinking feeling when he arrived that things here wouldn't be the same as they were back home-- not that he would be living the same life here as he did there.
He paused before speaking again, "Sorry. It was a... unnecessary question."

The elder watched the other soldier from the corner of his eye. âMan, you talk too much. Really.â He snorted at his own joke. âKidding, of course.â
Zack let his gaze wander from the stoic boy at his side to the area in front of him. Empty. Barren. Grounds that heâd gotten real tired of looking at, real fast. That wasnât to say that he slacked at his job. Zack was ever seeking to excel and better his rank.
<smaHe looked back to Cloud. âSo, kid. Got anything interesting to talk about?â
Cloud stayed silent for a moment. He wondered whether or not it would be in his benefit to befriend this person. Despite his relaxed attitude, the other was nothing but friendly to him, so he couldn't say it would be bad. He sighed a little, almost wishing he could cross his fingers in hopes that his effort wouldn't be in vain.
"...Hm. It's a quiet night, that's for sure. Is night watch usually like this?"
Izayaâs first thought had been to wonder why the new soldier hadnât simply removed himself from the situation. Â But humans were silly like that. Â Maybe heâd expected a poor response? Â It was exactly the oppositeâhe would have considered him to be perfectly reasonable if he wanted to leave. Â He certainly wasnât stopping him. Â But as long as the kid was there, he was more than happy to continue talking to (or, as it might have been, at) him.
"Are you new to the city, too?"
He nodded once in response. He felt a little awkward. He definitely wasn't much of a conversationalist, but the other seemed intent on talking to him. It was... good to make connections, right? Besides, he figured he might end up having to do a job with the other male, and being on extremely bad terms would not be good for either of them.
"...Are you new as well?" He figured he might as well ask. No harm done, right?
His perched eyebrows kept their height. Zack shrugged and swooped to the side to lean on his new acquired companion. If he didnât want to take his so kindly offered chance to catch a little more sleep than he would have, that was the blondâs own fault.
"Hey, this is your first night, right? I was going to let ya off easy, but now youâre stuck with me for halfa-halfa hour," he grinned and ruffled the gold spikes atop Cloudâs head. "I admire that you want to do your job correctly, and that you donât feel safe around someone you donât know," he paused, casting a knowing look toward the twitchy hand near the otherâs gun, "but you can seriously relax. Thereâs not much use getting stiff. Youâll get used to night post soon. The lack of sleep, thoughâŠ" Here he shrugged and stood up straighter, taking his weight off the smaller male. "I guess I just love my sleep a little too much."
Cloud frowned at the feeling of Zack's weight on him, and even more so at the ruffling of his hair. He shied away a bit, feeling extremely uncomfortable by the other's... touchiness. Relax? It was a little hard to. This man was pretty overly friendly and it made Cloud feel a little unsettled... And to slack off at work, weren't their superiors overly strict? That was the feeling Cloud got from the rundown of the rules. Perhaps because Zack was a little higher up with more experience, he had a better idea of what he could and couldn't do? In any case, Cloud wasn't really willing to risk his head for fifteen more minutes of sleep.
"...It's fine."

Zack quickly found out he underestimated the new soldier. A stuttering laugh escaped from his slack mouthed jaw. Black eyebrows had shot upwards, along with his hands. âW-Woah!â
Once the blond lowered his gun- even though it was barely a few inches- he relaxed fully. One of his once raised hands ran through the back of his spiked up hair. âIâm Zack, Zack Fair. Your elder by two years, and this is my post. You can put that away, believe me. Iâd have you on the ground before you even considered pulling the trigger.â He gave a hearty laugh and gestured toward the gun.
"Strife, right? Look, kid, your shift is over. Go get some rest before youâre needed againâŠUnless youâd like to keep me company." The elder soldier tossed a wink the new guyâs way.
Cloud was still a little hesitant, but put the gun away-- although not fully in case he needed it again. He looked at the other a little skeptically. This guy was older than him? He certainly didn't look it. And despite what he said, he really didn't seem like he could pin him down. The other male looked way too relaxed and, dare he say, excitable to do something like that.
"...My shift isn't fully over for another fifteen minutes." He stood his ground against this Zack person. If he really was as he claimed, perhaps Cloud could learn a thing or two from him, but for now, he would remain wary.
Zack trotted toward his usual post for night watch. It was nearly three in the morning, and his commanding officer had changed the usual routine to give one of the newbies a chance at playing guard. When he saw the young guy taking his place, he had to admit: he was a pretty alright looking guy. He knew from his own experiences, however, that one obtained scars pretty fast in this profession.
He started to near his usual station. He could see the blondâs back, which made an idea pop into his head. The black haired fighter started to stalk quietly toward the younger soldier. Once he was directly behind him, he lifted a gloved hand and let it fall on the teenagerâs shoulder.Â
"Hey there!"
Cloud was looking off into the night. He sighed to himself. Tonight he was supposed to be on night watch. He certainly hoped things would go smoothly, but the night could be a scary thing--
Suddenly, he felt a hand on his shoulder and someone yelling obnoxiously in his ear. Out of reflex, he almost jumped out of his boots and readied himself to attack. He stopped himself when he found a person dressed in a similar uniform as his own at the other end of his gun. Oh. He reluctantly lowered it but only a bit. He had met all of his commanding officers-- or at least saw their faces-- before he actually started work, so this person definitely wasn't someone he had to answer to.
"...Who are you and what do you want?"
New soldier?
No. Better. New Playtoy.Â
"Oi. Whatâs so fascinating outside the window, soldier?" Byakuran rested his chin on top of the boyâs head. Because he could. Because who could stop him? Trick question, no one. Thatâs who.Â
"Um... excuse me--"
Cloud went to push himself away from the stranger but stopped himself when he noticed who the other was. Shit. He bit his lip when he realized that this person was his faction's own general. Pushing him away probably wouldn't be the best decision, but at the same time, he couldn't say that this was a comfortable position.
"N-nothing in particular, sir... We were just taking a break and--"
He stopped himself before he dug himself into a hole. Slacking on his duties? He hoped Byakuran wouldn't see it that way. ...He wasn't going to be executed on his first day, was he?
"...W-what brings you here today, sir?" He tried to be as polite as possible.
Izaya realized how uncomfortable the boy was, and although amused, reluctantly conceded that it wouldnât be much use to talk to him if he was too frightened to speak. Â As a result, he abandoned his original plan and continued to smile, with a faint effort to make it less threatening.
"Youâre new here, right, Cloud-kun?"
The other male seemed to back off a bit. It was strange, but not at all unwelcome. Cloud didn't really want to deal with anything too... forward as of the moment. In the worst case scenario, he could just walk away, but he didn't really think it was...polite to do that. Especially just after meeting someone.
"Yeah... I joined recently..."
"âha."
The younger boy stiffened when he spoke, a sure sign that heâd been startled, and Izaya breathed a quiet laugh at his sudden reaction. Â He hadnât expected it to be so easy to catch him off guard, but so much the better. Â The easier it was to fluster the new soldier, the more fun the interaction was sure to be. Â He left his blade in his pocket and, with an exaggerated sigh, leaned against the window, directly across from the kid.
"Iâm Izaya Orihara," he introduced himself, with a slight malevolent grin. Â His tone was innocent enough, though. Â "Whatâs your name?"
Cloud tensed even more when he saw the other move directly in his line of sight. He had a feeling the other male wasn't going to leave him alone so easily, even if he asked politely. He resigned himself to respond as it seemed like the other was intent on amusing himself.
"...Cloud Strife."

"Donât tell me youâre depressed,â
Izaya leaned against the wall, eyes scanning the room to land on the younger soldier.  He had to admit, the vast majority of his recent entertainment seemed to come from talking with (or, possibly, infuriating) his fellow soldiers.  The city itself was interesting as a whole, but didnât produce much day-to-day variety.  Soon, it would divulge secrets worth knowing, he was sure, but for nowâŠ
"--?!"
Cloud almost jumped at the sound of someone's voice. He turned to the person in question, and had to fight from biting his lip. Cloud was hardly good at social interactions and even more so now that he was in a completely new environment. Considering the time and place-- and not to mention clothes-- Cloud figured the other was also a soldier. He figured it would probably be good to know a few people-- or at least not be on anyone's black list-- but he had a feeling at the other was making fun of him more than trying to be friendly.
"...No." His reply was practically a whisper, especially considering he was so hesitant to answer. But better to answer than not, as he figured he would only be poked more if he stayed silent.
"--.."
Cloud sighed a bit, looking out the window. The skies were dark-- in all honesty, it was rather gloomy. He half hoped that the sun would come out, but he felt like that wouldn't really make things look any nicer in Mirabili.Â
