Week 15

Your reflections on the reading ? In my opinion, in the “One square inch of silence” I can hear the birds and frogs like it was in a natural environment place and even the feeling that makes the sound. Also I learned that it helps the memory to recognize which sounds the guitar, telephone and car have names of a sound. If you hear them, you convert it to art. It’s just not objects, but a different perspective. Also I learned that to balance the sounds by making different points of sounds, it makes the sound different. Also, I don’t like the sounds too loud but I do like those sound that are low and sweet. In addition, hearing is different from listening which I didn’t know. Listening is paying attention and interacting with it. Listening happens when we convert sensible sound and connect with it.

Your reflections on the videos/media? My reflections on the video are that Susan Philipsz was born in Glasgow, Scotland. She works in psychological and sculptural sizes of sound. She records her voice and makes music. She collects old historical instruments and makes music sound with them. She puts her work of art in the environment in the water, street and traffic passing. The train station that Suzan spends most of her time at is one that was used most often to take the Jews to a concentration camp. Susan and the Jewish man work together, and composed music which they made sound like if it was World War II. Susan wants to make on her 18th anniversary the sound of the annexation of Austria by Germany.She lives and works in Berlin.

Has your opinion or understanding of art changed at all? How? In my opinion this class changed my point of view to see life differently, especially art, because before I didn’t think sound was art.

What artworks did you strongly like or dislike and why? I like “One Square Inch of Silence” because it is natural, it feels calmed down, and it’s a place to relax.

How does this relate to your life and interests? Well I like sound, but not too loud. I am more like a calm person and like the sound low.

This class certainly does change the point of view to see art differently! I too, did not think of sound as art until I read about it in the blog and watched the video about it this week. I found it hard to comprehend that art is sound. Normally art is what we see or visualize, so it was interesting that it was put it into the category as art. After learning more about it, I admit that it intrigued me. The added theatrical element of sound does create a significant impact on what the artist is trying to convey to us. Overall, I enjoyed it more than what I anticipated!

Week 15: Sound Art

Week 15 describes Sound Art and its meaning and impact on art. In the blog “An Introduction to Sound Art” written by Robert Worby, he describes sound as “very strange stuff.” He comments that the process of sound is a “complicated process” which involves particles, objects, air, and sometimes liquids moving. “You cannot hold it, you cannot touch it, you cannot feel it in your hand.” When the sound is gone, it is left with “only the memory of it.” To help keep the memory of a sound, artists generally use objects that produce a certain recognizable sound to them. These can be simple things like telephones, trains, horns from cars, and sirens from hospital cars or fire trucks. Each of these objects makes a distinctive sound which can visually produce the memory of these objects, and meaning these objects represent. The writer goes on to explain that to “engage in sound, the work that really needs to be done is the process of listening. This occurs when we become conscious of sound and connect with it.” (www.robertworby.com/writing/an-introduction-to-sound-art)

The author then describes the history of sound art. Although the term sound art is relatively new it has been around for many of years and “considered as a type of experimental music or performance.” He talks about many artists and their background to sound art. The person who stuck out the most to me was John Cage. He did the most to make possible what we now call sound art. He worked with sound until the day he died. He started out with composing music, then moved beyond the “confines of conventional musical structures.” In one of his pieces, he asks the performer to be silent for three consecutive movements, in which nothing but the noise of the audience is heard. This was interesting to me. I cannot imagine listening to nothing for this amount of time. We teach ourselves that there is an uncomfortableness in being silent. This happens in elevators or at the movie theaters, when you stay to watch the end credits in hopes that there are future previews to sequels. I often feel uneasy or like I need to talk to avoid this silence.

In the “One Square Inch of Silence” sound piece I listened to, I found surprisingly refreshing. It was one minute and forty-two seconds of nature sounds. I closed my eyes to get the full effect of the different sounds of nature. I could almost envision myself on a lazy summer day, resting in a Hammack. A still breeze is blowing, water dripping by the pond, frogs croaking. It was quite peaceful until the fly buzzing noises came. Then I wanted to swat the fly away, an annoyance to my peace and tranquility!

In the video of Suzan Philipsz, it describes her style of sound art and how she composes it. She often picks buildings and sites that have a history or significant meaning behind them. She then adds sound to these places to create a more theatrical or sentimental impact on the listener. In one of her exhibits, she simply has plain white speakers, surrounded by white walls and flooring. The only presence is of sound that comes out of the speakers. Each speaker has a different horn sound that is obtained through multiple horns that are no longer working or being used. To me, this really promotes the idea of sound as artwork!

The relevant artist Haroon Mirza, “attempts to isolate the perceptual distinctions between noise, sound, and music and explores the possibility of the visual and acoustic as one singular form.” (https://the-artists.org/mirza-haroon) He often builds sound performance structures to enhance the experience of sound from the objects of choice. In one of his pieces there is a yellow circle that floats across the ceiling like a hallow. The walls are all black and padded with spikes and squares. This reminds me of confession booth. The angelic rays from the hallow-shaped light is the very essence of god. The black walls create an intimate and private space to talk with him. When the sound comes, it will most likely be riveting!

Week 13

The blog By Jeriah is a very well written blog that gives a nice overview of relational aesthetics and social practices. If Jeriah were my friend on Facebook I would have seen his post, where he told his Facebook friends to “Explain ‘relational aesthetics/social practice,’ using only common language (no artspeak), and without bringing up Thai food. Go.” I would have been the person that answered by saying that I had no idea what it was. But after reading the rest of his blog I understand more of what it is and where it can be found in the world. Relational Aesthetics is a way of looking at regular, everyday, objects and seeing them as art. It reminds me of the saying one man’s junk is another man’s treasure and I think that all everyday items can be seen as art it just depends who is looking at it.

The article from the New Britain Museum of American Art also does a really good job of describing what relational aesthetics is and this article gives a definition in art terms instead of the article on “Bad at Sports”. I like the idea of relational aesthetics being more interactive and engaging for the viewer. I like art that is interactive and engaging because when I look at paintings or photos it is extremely difficult to see what the artist wants me to see and I don’t ever understand the purpose of the art.

“Art is directly connected to social change.” I really liked this video and the way the artist uses the social and political issues in Mexico as a way to make art. I really enjoyed the segment of the video with the chocolate. I thought that the dripping chocolate was a very good representation of the children that are dying because of starvation every 3 seconds. This video was very captivating and really engaging because the artist was bringing awareness to issues in the real work through works of art. I have never seen art being as useful as it was for this particular artist. It makes me sad to think about the number of people that die every minute due to starvation. When I saw the artist covering the bones in chocolate it made me think of how precious some cultures view chocolate and how precious a human life is. For that reason, I think that chocolate is the perfect substance to use for the analogy.

The relevant artist I chose for this week is Theaster Gates. Theaster Gates was born on August 28, 1973, and focuses his artworks on installation art and urbanism. His goal with is art is to connect art and life. Gates’ installation pieces often have a lot of repetition in them and when I am looking at his work I am overcome with the need to stop what I am doing and focus on what is in front of me so I can take in all that is happening. His work is unique and different but still simple and common at the same time.

I too, admit that I didn’t know what “relational aesthetics and social practices” was. I probably would have been one of the ones that answered sarcastically upon seeing it though. The blog, article, and video were helpful and informative. They made me see past the illusion that art is only paintings or structures. I couldn’t believe that a candy bar, or a pile of candy could represent art and have such meaning! When the stories were told behind these pieces, I admit that I felt a bit guilty for not taking it more seriously! I guess this is what our “Art Appreciation” course is intended for, right?

Week 13: Social Art

Week 13 reflects on Social Art. In the blog “An introduction to relational Aesthetics and social practice” The author/ teacher, writes about how he asked students to explain their interpretation of or about “relational aesthetics/ social practice.” He was surprised by how many did not take it seriously and had a skeptical attitude towards it. Based on their answers the teacher decides to learn more about social art in order to teach a course on it to better educate them, as well as himself, on this style of art. He wanted to broaden people’s skeptical views of this art and turn them into more positive ones. In his studies, he learned that social art is “an artwork can be considered “relational art” if it is essentially based on social interaction.” (badatsports.com/2014/an-introduction-to-relational-aesthetics-and) It is quite different than traditional art, which is defined by its physical materials. Social art is defined by the personal interactions, which are in fact the artwork.

In the article “Relational Aesthetics: The Art of Sociality” it talks about the meaning behind social art and its impact on our society. The author explains how “currently, many artists are using their practice to probe the new relations of power in a global world by creating works that set in place social relations.” (https://nbmaa.wordpress.com/2011/06/24/relational-aesthetics-the...) The article then goes on to give different examples of “Relational Aesthetics” styles of art by introducing various artists. My favorite of these was the piece “Untitled” by Felix Gonzalez-Torres. This artwork had a large heap of candy that is piled on the floor and weighs 175 pounds. The candies represent his partners life who has HIV. He encourages viewers to take a piece of candy as they exit the display. As the candy display gets smaller and lighter, this symbolizes the slow death of his sick partner. The viewers complete his work by taking the candy. Until I read this article, I would not have gotten the powerful meaning and message that this artist wanted revealed. Upon first look, I couldn’t see the connection of art with this pile of candy. I thought cool look at all the candy, is it Halloween? And guiltily, I admit that I was thinking that it would be fun to jump in it!

In the video of Minerva Cuevas, she talks about how her artwork makes a political statement. Her artwork is mainly rooted to Mexico and their political issues and cultures. My favorite of her artwork of hers would be her “Feast and Famine” exhibition. She displays the capitalist system and all the societies that are dying of starvation. In the display there is a giant Hersey bar with the wrapper ripped open to reveal chocolate. There are bones with chocolate dripped or drizzled on them. And she has a machine on the ceiling that drips chocolate down unto the floor every 3.6 seconds. Each dripping of chocolate represents someone dying from starvation. It keeps growing to form a massive pile on the floor. My first reaction to this was that I wanted a Hershey bar! It was cool to see one as big as this one was. I imagined what my daughter’s reaction would be to this display, as this is her favorite candy bar!

The relevant artist Regan Tamanui, otherwise known as “HaHa” “explores the power of mass media within Australian popular culture.” “He gets his images directly from the newspaper or from photographing the subject.” (www.regantamanui.com/bio.html ) My favorite artwork of his was from his Joker HaHa Gallery. It is of a half-masked face, revealing mostly just the large curve of a wide-mouthed person smiling. The teeth are stained yellow and blood is dripping down off out of the mouth. The words “HaHa” are scratched in blood. This instantly made me think of my comic books as I was a boy. I loved reading about them and looking at the pages of them. The artist is probably not just displaying comic book material, but rather a hidden message. I am not sure what, but I was entertained and intrigued by this photo. I wanted to do look through my collection of comics!

Social art does make one think, why are they displaying this? What is the meaning of this art? It was hard to look at this art seriously. It was only when I read the materials that I saw the value and meaning of it. I then felt guilty that I didn’t take it more seriously!!

Week 12

The first article I read was Bree Newsome’s Superwomen-Style Confederate Flag Pole Climb. In the article, it talks about Sonya Clarks “Unraveled” and “Unraveling” art piece she made. Sonya mentions that she uses the “flag unravelling to show how racism was unravelled.” I think what she was doing to the flag was a little disrespectful but after I read more about it and realized what she was doing I thought it was actually kinda cool. I included the image of her creation below.

The second article I read was all about the Performance Arts. It talks about how performance art is usually when the artist performances the art piece live in person by themselves or with a partner. I found out that a lot of artists that want to try something new they usually will turn to performance to test “new ideas and attract new people.” I think its cool how art has different trends through the decades just like with the clothing trends. In the article, it talks about how the performance art had a good ride in the 1970s but then when the 1980s came around painting came back in full speed.

Media

I have to say that this weeks video was one of the confusing videos I have watched on art. The video was over the artist Nick Cave called “Chicago.” I really just don’t understand the point of the meaning behind some peaches of his art. I think its just really weird and different. It is not like I don’t like it, I just think his creations are just unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. I do like the colourful creations he makes and how he’s not afraid of clashing colours together. I think its cool how Nick can get inspired by the smallest and simplest things such as a twig on the ground. The sound suit he made from the idea of sticks is just awesome. A lot of hard work and manual labour gets put into the creations he makes.

Comparison

I personally didn’t find a lot in common with the video and the first article. In the second article, I think that the performance art and the Nick Cave video had a lot in common. It was nice to read about the background of performing art and then seeing what it has developed into after watching the video over Nick Cave.

Relevant Artist

This week I decided to learn more about Adrian Piper. Adrian is known for very bold pieces of work that “treat race, gender, class, and identity.” I real reason why Adrian’s art drew me in was that of how honest and carefree it is. She doesn’t care about what people have to her artwork. Here artwork sticks out from other relevant artists I have read about in the past because she really focuses her artwork on the society and the social issues. One of my favourite peace she did was apart of her I am Locus 1975 series. This is an “oil crayon drawing she made from Polaroid pictures of herself in large crowds.” The polaroid pictures help make her art-piece stick out to me because I love the “vintage” look and how it makes it look like it has history to it. I think its cool how if you look at all the photos from being to end the text in the image gets better as if she’s talking to you personally and you can really feel and understand the point she’s trying to get out.

Cool view point on Bree, It was really cool to watch her do that in the video im sure you thought so too. I liked the picture series that you displayed for the relevant artist Adrian Piper. I read them a few times and I can relate to them. There have been many times when I am trying to get out of a crowd and I feel much like this. At school we use the term “you are in my bubble” for students to relay this message. They usually take a few steps back and laugh, not realizing that they are invading your space. I sometimes wish that we could do the same for adults. It usably takes more for them to get the hint, resulting in me saying the last phrase of this series!

Week 12: Performance Art

In week 12 we learn about performance art. In the blog based on performance art, it explains that “performance is a genre in which art is presented “live”, usually by the artist but sometimes with collaborators or performers.” (https://www.theartstory.org/movement-performance-art.htm)

It begins with leading into Futurism and Dada styles of art and starts to come to life in the Abstract Expression style of art. The different concepts and styles of performance art include; action, body art, happenings, endurance, and ritual. “The foremost purpose of performance art has always been to challenge the conventions of traditional forms of art such as painting and sculpture.” (https://www.theartstory.org/movement-performance-art.htm)

In the article of “Bree Newsome’s Superwoman-style, Confederate flag pole climb was an artistic statement” it discusses the act of a 30-year old black woman who cut down the controversial Confederate flag. She did this in protest of the hanging of this flag. The next day the flag went back up, but her actions stuck with many. Her brave act made in impact on others to stand up for her cause!

In the video of the artist Nick Cave, it describes the creating of his “soundsuits” and how he first came up with the idea for them. He is sitting on a bench in the park, staring at a twig on the ground and was inspired by how “discarded and dismissed” that one piece of twig was. This played into the idea of black culture and his art piece of twigs transforming into a “soundsuit.” (https://art21.org/artist/nick-cave)

My favorite of his art pieces of “soundsuits” was the piece that had a bullseye target as a mask for the face of the suit. The target was made up of red and white strings that swirled together in the pattern of a bullseye. The rest of the suit was made up of different styles, shapes, and sizes of white-pearl like colored buttons. These enclosed all the way up unto the mask and then back down around the feet. My first impression of this suit was that it looks liked some sort of creature that had its head cut off and was stumbling around because it couldn’t see. When looking at it closer, I think that the artist made this suit as a portrayal of black culture. The face represents that of someone being bullied or targeted. The buttons on the suit represent the several different people that endured this oppression.

The relevant artist Tehching Hsieh was known for his performance art through the concept of time. The amount of time one spends working and punching in at a time clock, or as a person in prison, or as someone living outdoors, and one that is literally connected to the same person. He takes the concept of time and spends one full year experiencing these different concepts of time.

My favorite of these performance art pieces was his “Time Clock” piece. There is a picture of him as an older man standing against the wall. A reflection of him as a younger man is on the wall behind him. On the wall beside him are thousands of punch cards that he used to punch in at the time clock at every hour for one full year.

When I first looked at this picture, it made me think of when I worked at John Deere. The many times that I punched into the time clock each day. The start of the day, the beginning and end of lunch, and end of the day for each shift every day. I couldn’t help but think of all the time that was “wasted” in my life while I worked there. The life of a factory worker is hard, tedious work that is often unnoticed or appreciated. When I look at this picture, I think that this could have been me. This is all I would have to show as my life’s work and my legacy. I am grateful that I am striving to be so much more!

Week 11

In the reading in the “Architect’s Unique Concerns” section, there was a segment that caught my eye “The architect is an artist, but also a social servant.” This single statement tells a lot about what architectures really face when designing building plans. They have to take into consideration who will inhabit the building, what the building will be used for, and how efficient the building needs to flow. It is important that architectures make sure that all of the things they put into their buildings are up to code with all of the regulations and requirements made by the government. Architecture is my favorite kind of art because to me it actually serves a purpose. Art that hangs on a wall seems pointless to me and is just there to take up space. Architecture is everywhere and in every time period. I was able to go to Italy this summer and got to see so many different examples of neat architecture. It was truly the trip of a lifetime and I was able to take in so much of a different culture that I really didn’t want to leave. Older ruins can often be confused with “rubble” but if you look closely it still has its’ structure and intricate details on the bricks and pillars. In the reading, it was also very fascinating to see the skeleton structure of a skyscraper and the broken down thought process of how a building of that magnitude starts.

Maya Lin is the architect that built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and in the video, she was chosen to design and construct a new landscape for a rundown park. There was an old ice rink in the park that was in desperate need of some renovations and it was this old ice rink that caught Maya’s eye. She thought of involving the three different stages of water – liquid, gas, ice. The ice rink served as water in the form of ice, a ring of mist served as the water in the form of gas, and the circular fountain served as water in its’ liquid form. The design of the ice rink came from the image of water rippling after something has disrupted it. The terraces around the rink resemble the different levels of ripples and the rink is the center. I thought it was very well designed and was amazed at how she came up with that from basically scratch.

The relevant artist that I chose for this week was Frank Gehry and he was born in Toronto, Canada on February 28, 1929. His work reminds me of wavy and twisted tree branches and looks like it would make buildings appear to be unstable. I know that for his building to still be standing there are obviously very stable but I think could be the point. From his work, I get a vibe of things that appear to be unsteady but are actually very strong. Kind of like my life right now. I am all over the place, very busy, always changing, and kind of out of order, but under all of that I am always there for those who need me and too often put the needs of others in front of my personal needs.

I enjoyed this unit about Architecture as well. These structures are amazing to look at and admire. Although these buildings and structures might have more purpose other than admiring, I must disagree with you on when you say that wall art that hangs on a wall and is “pointless and is just there to take up space.” To me all art is made with more than the intent of displaying or viewing it. The artist creates this piece of art to inspire or send a message to the viewer. Perhaps the artist creates this artwork for their own personal intent. People often hang pictures of their families on the wall. To anyone else, this might seem pointless, but to the person who hung it up. To them it has significant value and meaning, it is something that does more than just take up space-it defines them!

Chapter 13: Architecture

Chapter 13 describes the Architecture style of art. “Visually, buildings are developed from the same elements and principles of design as other art forms.” (pg. 386) Architects work with form, texture, line, space, and color to produce three-dimensional works of art. This chapter explains architects’ unique concerns, functional considerations, structure, and socially responsible architecture. I really enjoyed this chapter and the seeing all the different structures of the Architecture style of art!

My favorite architecture structure in this chapter was “The Nave of Chartres Cathedral” from France in 1194-1220. This structure is made up of several columns of arches that stretch high up into the ceiling, narrowing at the top. The arches are aligned in rows that lead down the isle of the church, creating a mirrored image affect. They are held up by large gothic pillars. The warm, rich colors of bronze and gold, flicker from the sunlight shining through the stain glass windows. This godlike structure was overwhelming to look at it. It reminded me of something that a vampire would reside in. The candle chandeliers and the massive gothic style created the very essence of a vampire’s castle. A place where arches stretched up higher and higher, allowing dark shadows to form at the very top. What was lurching in these shadows? I kept waiting to see bats fly out from these arches. Bats that would transform into vampires!

In the video of Maya Lin, she describes her artwork as “part art and part architecture.” She explains that she couldn’t decide which style of art she wanted to do. Instead of choosing, she decided to do both styles of art. My favorite architecture piece of artwork that she did was the “Langston Hughes Library.” This looks like an old country, cottage style home that is propped up on square base of logs. The logs are positioned like that of log cabin fence. Inside, it looks just like a regular library; there are shelves of books aligned in rows. Outside, the structure looks much different. It reminded me of the house from the movie “The Wizard of Oz.” The way in which the structure is positioned on top of the logs looks like it fell upon them; as if from a tornado. I could almost envision the swirling of winds sweeping this structure up, then setting it down unto this spot. I wondered if the wicked witch from the land of Oz in fact was under it!

The relevant artist Antoni Gaudi’s architecture buildings were both inspiring and magical to look at. “His distinctive style of art is characterized by freedom of form, voluptuous color and texture, and organic unity.” (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Antoni-Gaudi) The use of colors that he used in his structures, created a fanciful feel to them. My favorite of his sculptures was his building “Casa Batllo.” This building reminded me of something that you would see from the boardgame “Candyland.” The bright colors sprinkled on the building and the odd shaped window structures looked a lot like pieces of candy. The chimney was shaped like a swirl of cool whip or frosting. If there was a world of Candyland, I am pretty sure that this would be one of the houses in it!

Week 10

Crafts are something that everyone has done. It comes in a variety of different forms and not just DIY’s. The options listed in the book are clay, metal, glass, fibers, and wood. One of my favorite crafts would be clay. Clay is something that I enjoyed when I was in my 3D art class. We were able to create clay sculptures using coil building, ceramics, and slab building techniques. I was able to make a piece and bring it to an Art Conference. Crafts are something I enjoy doing and found it interesting to reflect what I have and haven’t done while reading. I love being able to mess up and just restart by adding a small amount of water. Making clay sculptures relaxes me because I can randomly create instead of having anxiety while drawing or painting and trying to make everything perfect.

Brian Jungen’s work isn’t something that I liked very much. In the video, he created art made from sneakers. He’s part of the Native American culture and wants to create something related to that. He cut up shoes and sewed them together in a certain way. On one pair Brian added hair to it to create faces of Native Americans. He wanted to create art like this to show his identity and what his origins were like. I didn’t understand what Brian was trying to get out of cutting up brand new pairs of shoes. I would think that the shoes should be worn out to show how the Native American’s worked and lived and that their lives weren’t squeaky clean. He did mention in the video, that using common items that we see everyday will allow viewers to connect to his work more which is an idea that is really cool to portray.

Brian’s work would be fibers. In fibers, there is stitching like quilting. Brian stitched all the shoes together to make one piece. I will admit, however, that Brian went outside the box to create art like this. Overall, his work kind of creeped me out and I didn’t enjoy it at all compared to the past week’s artists.

Kimsooja is an artist born in South Korea in 1957. She first started art by working with fabrics, then she moved on to installations, and now she also works with videos and films. She is based in New York, Paris, and Seoul. While she was in a university, she studied Western paintings. Kimsooja’s work caught my eye because of her famous work’s dealing with glass. The rainbow from the glass reminded me of tranquility. When I look at the glass, it gives me a feeling of peace. I would love to go to the palace she made and observe the details and how she made everything.

I admire people who make art with glass because I simply don’t know how glass is made. I would love to be able to see, in person, how glass is made and how artists use it in their works. Glass works I think are beautiful and are very eye catching, especially when the sun shines through and the colors and sparkles appear.

I liked the artwork that you chose for the relevant artist, Kimsooja. It does sort of “give a feeling of peace.” The lighting from the sun and the angle from which the picture was taken, creates a room filled with rainbow prisms. The refection of the prisms was even displayed over the glass floor. The whole effect was exciting to look at. It reminded me of watching the fireworks or a shooting star. Looking at something that puts you in awe and is hard to look away. I remember whenever I watched the fireworks as a child, I didn’t want to look away or even blink because I didn’t want to miss anything!

Chapter 11: Craft Media

Chapter 11 describes the Craft Media style of art. This style of art “reflects the human touch” and it often “celebrates the materials from which they are made.” (pg. 350-351) The materials that are usually used in the Craft Media style of art are clay, metal, wood, glass, and fibers. The chapter gives examples of each of these materials that are made into Craft Media art.

My favorite of these was the craft art piece entitled, “Vase” by Harvey Littleton. It is made up of just a simple piece of clear glass which is blown and stretched, creating a wave like pattern. This art piece kind of looks like a teardrop that is floating in the air. It reminded me of my mother when I was growing up. She loved blown glass pieces and used to collect them. I remember them being displayed on the kitchen shelf that was way up high. She would admire them and comment on how beautiful they were. To me, they just looked like a piece of glass that was all twisted and bended up. I did like admiring the cool shapes that they sometimes made. I would think of different animals that they looked like, sometimes I even came up with names for them. I didn’t like them as much as my mom did, but I cherished them because they were something that gave her joy. This piece of art gave me joy because it made me think of her and how much she would have enjoyed seeing it!

In the video of Brian Jungen, he explains how he grew up as a Native Indian and how his experience of growing up led to him becoming an artist. His parents died when he was only seven, leaving him to “bury himself in his imagination.” He said that “he used to make his artwork to hide behind it, but then it became impossible because his artwork was created through his identity.” (https://art21.org/watch/art-in-the-twenty-first-century/s8/brian... ) He would look at objects and find something that had no significance or meaning and then turn it into something that is part of his culture of background. I really liked his art piece “Prototype for New Understanding #23.” It is a pattern of Air Jordan shoes arranged in black, white, and red that come together to form a mask. Although the artist made this as a reflection of his culture, this mask instantly reminded me of the “kiss” rock in roll band. This band would paint their faces up in these colors when they performed. I could almost envision Gene Simons with his long tongue sticking out!

The relevant artist Ai Weiwei’s “father’s poetic artistry and family’s precarious situation had a deep effect on him as an artist.” (https://www.theartstory.org/artist-ai-weiwei.htm) His father was a poet who was well known in China and imprisoned twice for his political views. He uses his childhood background to inspire him when creating his artwork. My favorite piece of his art is entitled, “stacked.” It is made of thousands of bicycles that are suspended in the air. They are all the same color and shape; white with silver spikes and black tires. They are aligned in rows that come together and form a small path to walk through. I think that the artist was trying to portray the bikes as numbers of people in uniform, aligning together. Although the artist probably made this as a reflection from his childhood or something political, it made me think of a spider web. The way that the bicycles are suspended in the air and the spikes on the bike tires look like webs that were spun. The whole illusion together creates an effect of a huge spiderweb, and the path is the place of entrapment. This is where the spider comes down and captures its prey!

Week 8

Installation art

Reading

“I do not see according to its exterior envelope; I live it from the inside; I am immersed in it. After all, the world is around me, not in front of me.” a quote from Maurice Merleau-Ponty in the art review. The philosopher view on installation art completely sums up what this genre is all about. This genre can be found in galleries, shows, and normal buildings. The real beauty of this genre, in my opinion, is shown in exterior showcases. Installation art in use in gardens, bridges, and parks, are some of the best destinations to showcase their true beauty. This is because Installation art is meant to be a full body experience. Meaning that they are created so they can be intractable and be able to be walked through. The artist often wants the viewer to experience everything the piece has to offer.

My favorite piece is the Rain Room, which is shown below. I’ve been a fan of this place/piece for years and I am so glad that it is covered in the art review. The room works with cameras and sensors. As it rains all the time, you are able to move anywhere and the rain will never hit you. It parts as you stand, walk and even dance throughout the water. This is because the cameras and sensors predict your moves. It’s literally programmed so you always experience the best parts of rain and get to enjoy the beauty without the worst part of getting wet. Its beautiful and pure.

Because of a noisy night and not being a to sleep, Do Ho Suh creates a sanctuary. As it is not directly referred to as a sanctuary in the video, this piece to me is described as one. Do Ho Suh created this piece because he couldn’t sleep and he realized he missed home. As for most of my childhood, I Grew up in Northeast Iowa I know the feeling of being homesick. For me I miss the hills and valleys and the constant smell of the true fresh air, Do Ho Suh misses his home and to be more specific his childhood home. So Do Ho Suh created a replica of his home that he could always take with him. This home was recreated out of fabric. I have never seen anything like it before and not only is it beautiful but it showcases installation art in a way unlike most. He is able to be “in” his home whenever he wants, which is so cool.

Relevant Artist

The relevant that I chose this week is Nancy Holt. In my opinion, her works embody the beauty of Installation art. Regardless of the fact that most Installation art pieces are found in interior spaces. Nancy’s work is mostly land art pieces. I believe that installation pieces have more effect on the visitor because natural beauty is always better. Also, natural beauty is never the same when it is recreated. Installation art is beautiful and makes you see through different perspectives. I am just glad that I finally figured out the artist responsible for the piece that is showcased on the cover of our art appreciation page. I never realized the beauty of it till you see each piece through different perspectives. Each hole showcases light into an image when placed at the end of the piece. It’s Beauty that makes you work for it.

I really liked the pictures that you chose from the relevant artist Nancy Holt. The way that the lighting captures the shadow of the person standing underneath the structure is awesome! I didn’t know that she showcased the piece that is displayed on the cover of our art appreciation page, how cool! I am enjoying seeing art in a different perspective through this course. Art that I would have ordinarily not looked at or just passed by, I am finding to be surprisingly tasteful! It’s kind of like finding a treasure that has been hidden away!

Week 9: Installation Art

Week nine is about Installation Art. In Wikipedia this style of art is defined as “an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that are site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space.” It can be either temporary or permanent. This style of artwork is displayed in “museums and galleries, as well as public and private spaces.” Installation Art is created with “every day and natural materials and new media.” This includes video, sound, performance, immersive virtual reality, and the internet. In the Art Review: Installation Art-Five Wonders in New York, Installation Art is defined as “a form of art not limited to an object such as a painting, sculpture, photograph or film, but rather one that encompasses an entire room, building, or outside environment.” This review talks about the five artists and museums that he visited and what he thought about them. (Gabrielle Selz Art Reviews, MUSEUMS, NEW YORK CITY, Reviews)

My favorite of these was the artwork “Scrim Veil” by Robert Irwin. This was a black and white room that had nothing in it but a window and a small doorway. The floor had black tiles that shined from the light which came through the window. The ceiling had a bunch of squares on it which made it look lower than it really was. The walls were divided by a black seem which really is a black bar that hangs from the ceiling. All these elements combined make the room appear like it goes on beyond its borders. The lighting and shade from the sun make the room seem like it’s a dream or an illusion. This room reminded me of something in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” movie. In this movie, Willy takes the people who won a tour of his chocolate factory to a room where he unlocks a door. He leads the people through the doorway into a room which looks a lot like this one. The room appears small and the next doorway looks like it goes somewhere far away. Everyone shrinks down to enter the doorway of this room. Upon entering the next room, they are all amazed to see that it is just an ordinary room. The room of this artwork gives the viewer a sense of “re-encountering the world” much like the room from the movie did.

The Video of Do Ho Suh in “Stories” the artist tells about his inspiration and how he uses it in his artwork. He creates art based on his childhood experiences and memories. I really liked his art piece entitled “The Haunting Sculpture.” It is made up of entirely “dog tags” that are from soldiers that fought in the war. It looks like a suit or robe that one wore as armor long ago. They overlap each other so that they look like actual armor. They start at the floor of the room and come up to the top of the sculpture of armor. When you enter the room, you are walking on these “dog tags.” I think that the artist is trying to portray the fact that it took many soldiers to protect us, but they often were not noticed or appreciated. Each “dog tag” had the name of a soldier on it and formed into one large piece of armor. The tags were displayed on the floor to step on, devaluing the importance of these soldiers and what they had done.

The relevant artist Spencer Finch’s artwork was neat to look at. I really enjoyed the piece “366 Melting Candles.” This was a room filled entirely of 366 candles that were aligned together in a spiral of different colors. The candles in the middle were melted down, they became less melted as the spiral spun outward. One candle is lit towards the back and the candles in the far back were completely non-lit. This reminds me of something that I did with dominoes when I was a child. I loved to arrange them like this and then knock them over and see them fall, one by one. The way in which these candles are arranged by non-lit, to lit, to melted half-way, to completely melted is very similar to the effect of dominoes being knocked over.

Blog 8

Chapter 10 deals with three dimensional artwork, such as sculptures. The four typical ways sculptures are created are through carving, modeling, casting, and assembling (p. 327). Carving is a sculpting process that uses a hard material, such as stone or wood, and is cut away to create the intended form (p. 329). Michelangelo uses a block of stone to carve the figure of “Atlas” Slave. This is a very powerful sculpture where the body is carved, but the head isn’t: instead, the block of stone remains in place of the head. “Atlas” Slave appears to be trying to break free from the block. I found this concept extremely interesting because I think it represents the restraints of slavery, but it also reinforces the idea that “the best of artists does not have a concept that the marble itself does not contain within it” (p. 329). Modeling is a sculpting process that that uses soft materials that are shaped by hand. Since the material is soft it often can’t hold its weight so it’s built over an armature (p. 334). Casting uses “easily shaped materials” to form a mold where molten material is poured and hardened (p. 337). Assembling is the fourth traditional process of sculpting where different pieces and materials are combined (p. 340). I think the future of art will become limitless, especially with the increased presence of technology. Sculptures are more easily being made at larger scales because we can use computers to look at pieces from all angles (p. 327-328). In addition, I think we will come up with even more ways to preserve art and have access to more things, such as larger kilns.

I continue to learn that art is a form of expression. Not all artists want their art to last forever, which was a concept that was hard for me to wrap my mind around. However, Zoe Leonard’s work on Strange Fruit (for David) helped me to understand why some artists prefer to create ephemeral works. Leonard took fruit peels and stitched them together with thread, wire, buttons, and zippers as a way to mourn her friend’s death (p. 344). She chose not to preserve her work with chemicals because its fate was meant to be temporary. I almost feel like this choice, to keep it temporary, represented her pain. It’s okay to mourn and to hurt and not understand something like death. However, as time goes on the pain will lessen and you will learn to continue on. Although the loss of her friend will always hurt, eventually that pain will fade and she will be able to move on, just like her piece.

In case you couldn’t tell from my tumblr name (GWTWsince97), Gone With the Wind is my favorite book and movie, therefore, I was especially excited to watch Kara Walker’s video and read about her thoughts on her piece. Her team carved a sphynx of a black woman from a block of sugar. She put so much intellect and heart in her piece. She did much studying on the history of sugar and the things that are created from sugar. Though she doubted Margaret Mitchell’s historical romance novel at first, she became intrigued with the history, romance, and the diction. I loved hearing about the story from her perspective because she brought up things that we are meant to understand, like the smell of a group of people, but that we shouldn’t logically understand. I think the book and her art help her to understand herself as an African American artist better. I especially loved when one of the men that was working on her sculpture mentioned that hands are important to create the art, but the thought behind it is more important.

Another form of three-dimensional art, aside from the four traditional forms, are Earthworks, which use the earth’s surface as their medium (p. 342). Robert Smithson utilizes Earthworks to create his work, as he did with his Spiral Jetty. He used 6,000 tons of basalt and limestone and laid them, in a spiral shape, in the Great Salt Lake because it represented how he felt when he visited it (p. 346). His work is also ephemeral and it only lasted for two years before the water rose and covered it. After a drought his work could be seen again although it was different and covered in salt (p. 346). The work helped me understand how magical of a place the Great Salt Lake is and how life-changing it was for Smithson, as well making me admire the beauty of nature. The fact that the piece is ephemeral makes me appreciate it even more because it allowed nature to take its course and almost naturally assemble to the piece.

I also enjoyed learning about Kara Walker’s artwork. When you stated that “she put intellect and heart” into her pieces, I couldn’t agree with you more. I liked how the Sugar Resin Boys were made of molasses, which is what this factory produced. She used the environment as well as the background of slavery to create these pieces, making them more meaningful. I didn’t catch what the men in her video stated about “hands being important to create art, but the thought behind it is much more important.” This was very true of Kara Walker’s artwork!

Chapter 10: Sculpture Art

Chapter 10 describes Sculpture Art and the different ways in which it is created. These include; Carving, Modeling, Casting, Assembling, Earthworks, and Installations, Performances, and Multimedia. “Before executing a sculpture by such methods, artists often make a miniature model of the proposed piece.” (pg. 327)

My favorite piece of Sculpture Art from this chapter was the Environmental piece called “Spiral Jetty” by Robert Smithson. (pg. 347) The artwork spiral was made of mud, salt, crystals, rocks, water, and a coil 1,500 feet long. It was created on the surface off the island of Great Salt Lake in Utah. The artist shaped the materials from the earth to create a large spiral that wraps around the surface of the lake. It took the artists 10 years to create this piece! This was inspiring to me. This art is something that will remain in the history of environmental art. This reminds me of something God would create by taking his finger and tracing the earth into a spiral along the lake. The artist created this massive, majestic piece of earthwork that is much like the work of God!

In the video of Kara Walker, it shows her inspiration behind her monumental public project. It was done in a Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn, New York. She uses the “molasses-covered space” and “extensive research into the history of sugar” to help her create this artwork display. I really liked the Sugar and Resin Boy figurines from this project. They are molded together with real molasses molds. They are of young boys who are carrying baskets full of what looks like crystalized sugar molasses. Their skin is a bronzed brown that shimmers in the light from the molasses. This reminds me of something that you might see in the 1800’s during the slavery era. Black slave boys, working hard to produce sugar molasses for their owners. Their skin is covered in molasses and sweat. I feel like the artist is trying to portray the background of African Americans and their history in these sculptures.

In the interview of Kara Walker, it talks about her “interpretation of the novel “Gone with the Wind” and how it became the inspiration to her first silhouette piece of art.” She explains her take on her artwork and its background. “The more I started to examine my own relationship with history, the more love I had for this artistic, painterly conceit, which is: to make a painting a stage and to think of your characters, your portraits or whomever, as characters on that stage. And to give them this moment, to freeze-frame a moment that is full of pain and blood and guts and drama and glory.” Kara uses her artwork to carry out the story of history and its impact.

The relevant artist Diana Al-Hadid “uses everyday materials, such as plaster, plywood, and cardboard, to create monochromatic, room-sized structures that seem to rise, fall, and ooze all at once.” (https://www.artsy.net/artist/diana-al-hadid) My favorite piece of her artwork was called “Chaotic and Poetic.” This sculpture was made of many layers of what looks like rocks. On the top of these layers of rocks are white strips of draping cloth. The cloth is aligned to look much like Greek style structures of the Romans. This reminds me of something that you might see at the bottom of the ocean. The dingy white and rusty like look of the rocks, makes the structure appear like it has been sitting there for many years. Perhaps the artist was trying to portray how things change throughout history and become old and battered, but art doesn’t lose its poetic style and grace throughout time!

Week 7

Chapter 8 covered Photography and Filmmaking, which is something I have always enjoyed and has been one of my favorite styles of art. With photography, it is interesting. Say the photo is to be taken of a person, in that photo it can be easy to capture to the personality of that person, such as in Figure 8.4. Going away from that, Edward Weston did something that I believe is very difficult for most everyone to accomplish. He was able to change his whole style completely within the realm of photography. He went from taking photos that were purposely put of focus to taking photos that were as sharp as could be and easily identifiable. This takes a lot of skill and is extremely difficult for anyone to do with any subject. Many times I have seen Headspring (figure 8.22) and not once have a considered it to be filmed. I’ve always thought of this as photography because it’s not a video. But this is interesting because he used 12 different cameras, although it is considered to be “in a motion picture film.”

Natalia Almada Immediately she mentioned how filming helps create and store memories. Now, this is something that I really like because with a film we have the chance to remember what we recorded when we look back at it years from now. One of her first films felt with pain. She talked about the death of her sister and how it impacted her life along with her family’s lives. This can be a big deal because a lot of people keep negative things, such as this, to themselves and away from everyone else. Natalia decided to share this part of her life. She also knew she couldn’t give the full effect, so thinking of ways to make her work better she asked her family for help. I think it is incredibly strong of her to make multiple films that are very personal. This, to me, is why she loves film so much, she is able to put her heart and soul into her work. I like how she puts her effort into her work, as she mentioned she goes from being outside in all the elements and sometimes dangerous places, she is later able to go inside and edit. While editing she is able to fully reflect on what exactly she did. I think this is an idea we all need to take as for it is important in all aspects of life.

Jim Cummings The part I enjoyed the most from this film was how it was all filmed in one shot with no outtakes or cuts in the film. This, to me, makes it all more investing with only one camera shot rather than multiple cutting back and forth. The other part was how the camera continues to slowly inch closer to the main actor when he becomes emotional. I think this helps the watchers feel more connected with the actor and how we were feeling guilty and sad. When thinking about this film it makes me wonder that Jim Cummings had gone through to create this piece.

Julia Pott When watching this video, Belly, I became very uncomfortable. It’s not because of what is shown, but the lines around them moving constantly. I personally like crisp, bold, solid lines.

Hiroshi Sugimoto is a unique photographer. Most all of his work is in black and white and uses a large-format camera. He works hard to use this method, keeping memories forever, to the best of his abilities. He models large subjects, such as tools and auditoriums. His photography isn’t my favorite as for most of his photos are out of focus, whether completely out of focus or just a little. But like this one photo of a theater, taken near the ceiling. I like this because I feel the theater has a lot of history and details in the walls.

Photography is interesting to look at and it does often capture the personality of the person being photographed. Photography captures the exact moment or the exact emotion that the person is experiencing at the exact time of the picture being taken. It brings to life the art of each picture that is captured. This happens in filmmaking as well, but in more depth. We can literally see the moment and experience it again with filmmaking. I recently watched some of my videos I filmed of my children when they first talked, walked, ate their first food, etc. These videos instantly took me back to these times. I remember feeling proud, happy, glad all over again. It was even better to see these again on film with my children and share the memory with them!

Chapter 8: Photography and Filmmaking

Chapter eight explains the Photography and Filmmaking of art. “Photography is the Greek word for writing with light.” (pg. 279) The chapter explains the history of Photography, Digital Photography, creative use of Digital Imaging, Film, Television, Video, and Multimedia. My favorite piece of artwork from this chapter was the print “Moonrise” taken by Edward Steichen. It is a picture of a still river that has grassy hills and tall trees in the background. The glow of the moon is coming through the trees and reflecting across the water. The light from the moon creates shadows of the trees that reflect a mirror image into the water. The sky is a light blue that also reflects into the river. It almost looks like the background was painted into the water. This picture captures the peacefulness and stillness of the early evening before the moonrise beautifully. It reminds me of something I had saw in the car on a trip to visit my uncle. I remember thinking that the view was so beautiful and peaceful. It was somewhere that I wished I could stay. Somewhere silent and peaceful, no worries or cares. I would rather be there than visiting my uncle and his annoying daughter!

The video that interviewed Natalia Almada was interesting to see. She had a Mexican background that originated back to her great-grandfather. He was Mexico’s 40th president. Because of her culture and background, she “makes intimate films that delve into the tragedies of her Mexican-American family’s personal history.” I liked how she defined herself as neither part Mexican or part American, she is “all Mexican and all American.”

The short films “Thunder Road” by Jim Cummings and “Belly” by Julia Pott were interesting to watch. Both films were a bit weird and strange. I had to watch them a few times to understand what the filmmakers were trying to portray. I think that the films where trying to express the emotions of dealing with losing a loved one. Everyone reacts and deals with this loss differently. In the “Thunder Road” film, his mother passed away and he was having a hard time dealing with his feelings of regret and guilt of disappointing his mother. Instead of bringing honor to her, he uses this time to confess his shortcomings and failures. It seemed more like a confession rather than a funeral service.

In the “Belly” film, the boy is very close to his friend. He goes everywhere with him and experiences everything with him. His brother is mean to him, but he longs for his brother’s companionship. His brother gets eaten by a whale and his friend goes to save him and gets stuck to the side of the whale. He tells the boy to go, sacrificing himself. The boy acts as if this does not bother him. He tries to hide his feelings of sadness from his brother. Then in the end you can see the boy is agonizing over the loss of his dear friend.

The relevant artist Wolfgang Tillmans is an “influential contemporary German photographer.” He has been taking pictures since the 1990s. He often captures his pictures of landscapes from an airplane window. He explains that he wants the pictures that he takes to “function in terms of the viewer and their experience.”

My favorite portrait of his is entitled “Freischwimmer.” This picture was taken of the clouds in the sky. The sky is dark grey like it is going to rain. The clouds are formed together in puffs of white, blue, and grey. Inside of the clouds, light from the sun is shinning through them. This reminds me of something you would see if God was having a symphony behind the clouds. Almost as if he were to be conducting an orchestra of heavenly angels and the only vison that the human eye could see would be this. The light that shines through the clouds is from his glowing presence. I remember as a child looking up at the clouds and wondering if God was up in them. When I look at this picture, I can really visualize his presence!

Week 6: Printmaking and Graphic Design

Reading: I learned a lot in chapter 6 and 7. Chapter 6 talked about printmaking, approaches to printmaking, the processes, Intaglio, lithography, stencil, photocopy and fax art. I read in the book that prints were first developed in Korea and China. I never knew that there were so many ways to do printmaking. I always just thought the only way was to carve into wood blocks. The only experience I have with printmaking is in my art class in 10th grade I believe; we got to carve whatever we wanted and do five prints in black and white. I remember that it was a lot of trial and error and better not to cut away too much because you can’t tape the wood back on after its carved or anything. It seems like a tough artform to perfect. I like how printmaking doesn’t have to be just black and white but that you can use color as well. I thought it was interesting that our book for this class was made using Offset Lithography and that you can see the dots if you use a magnifying glass. I also like how some aspects of photography were shown in this chapter as well. Chapter 7 talked about Graphic Design, Typography, and illustration. Graphic design is mainly used for advertising purposes and in Latin America artists have started using posters as it is an expensive way to have art in your home. I think it’s interesting how there is art on postage stamps I never realized that was graphic design. There were a lot of printmaking pieces that I loved in chapter 6. For example, the very first picture in the chapter that was a woodblock print by “Hokusai”. I love the reddish brown of the mountain and that the background is blue and white to make the mountain pop. I also love that you can see the texture from the woodblock in this piece so beautifully. I also loved the digital screen print by “Gus Mazzocca”. The colors really appealed to me, I like how they are bright and fun. I also like how the image of the girl is blurry to show that she is dancing in motion. My understanding of art has changed a lot because every medium of art takes so much hard work. I always thought there was at least one that was easy but so far, all mediums are complex. I loved this chapter because this was something I wasn’t familiar with, so it was nice to learn a lot more.

Video: John Baldessari got his degree in art and gave up painting to do printmaking. He works with color wheels a lot to decide all the different colors his prints are going to have. I like how his pieces are very different from everyone else’s. He did a piece where he took a photograph and added colored price stickers over the faces as simple as that is, it looked great.

Connections/comparisons: There were a lot of similarities between the video and the chapters. John talked about different colors he uses in his prints, just like the book did. The book went more in-depth about the different techniques that there are with printmaking. Overall, I learned a lot from the book and the video. I always think its helpful to see the artist in work to really understand what’s going on.

Relevant Artist: Andy Warhola better known as Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928. His mother was also an artist and when Andy was sick she gave him his first drawing lessons. “He graduated with his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and moved to New York”. He got a job with glamour magazine, that’s when his career launched. Andy was the most well-known commercial artists around especially for his Campbells soup commercial. When he got shot by someone he worked with his life changed forever, he started focusing his work more on business. I love his pop art that he did of Marilyn Monroe, she was such an iconic person and for him to paint her was such a great idea. The colors he chose were amazing, I love all his work. His pop art work inspires me to try pop art again. I remember once a few years ago I was looking at all his pop art work and tried to paint some lips in that style.

I didn’t know that there were so many ways to do printmaking either. I flipped back through the book to look at them. This was something that I had not realized when I first read through the chapter. I too, remember my first experience with printmaking. I tried so hard to make a detailed design. It was frustrating that I had to keep redoing it because my lines would intersect with each other. Then after many attempts, I ended up cutting into my thumb. I still can see the scar from where my tool cut into me. This ended my desire to do any printmaking or carving. My skills with a pen, pencil, or a brush are much better!
