By this time next week, Iāll be home for Christmas!!!!
And that thought will get me through.
Have we talked about the irony of getting woken up on call for an order for a sleeping pill?
I text my partner after every delivery Iām involved with telling him āthereās a new baby (girl/boy) in the world!ā
His joy from it amplifies mine and reminds me both what an incredible heart he has and why obstetrics is a wonderful part of family medicine.

āIām sorry. Did I wake you up?ā
āCall changes you ā in direct proportion to how much of it you take. It runs your life. It determines whether you take one car or two or whether you even go at all.ā

A) Iām tired of hearing extreme lambasting of conservatives from those on the far left
B) why is it so flipping hard to deal with old relationship baggage?
This airport used to make me tingle with adventure
Now that weāre long distance, itās equally sad and welcoming
Today itās sad
I donāt particularly want to go back to residency
(1) Hi, I have a bit of dilemma that I'm hoping you could help with. So I've worked at McDonald's for quite a few years, at 2 locations. I've worked at the most recent location for over a year, but I have had to take quite a few months off due to an injury and recovering from surgery. I ended up getting fired for taking this time off, which I didn't think was legal, but regardless that kind of soured the relationship btwn my employer and I. Now I'm not sure what to do since I place on
(2) applying to med school this summer, and I know that I need to provide contact info for someone who can vouch for every activity that I put on the application. I donāt think that this employer would have great things to say about me if a med school contacted them, but I donāt want to leave over a year gap in my employment record, so I'm not sure what's the best thing to do.
Hey,
I can only answer from my own context but Iāll try to help.
1) From my experience, I only had to list āverifiersā of my activities submitted on my application. The med school didnāt have prolonged āreference letterā type conversations with my verifiers. They literally asked ādid she do the thing she says?ā
2) I donāt believe previous employers are allowed to give negative references. I would have to fact check this - but would encourage you to look into it.
Itās prudent to reach out to verifiers to confirm they are willing to be contacted by the medical school. If you do so maturely, I think it would be the right thing and the mature thing for your precious employer to at least verify that you did work for them for the given period you wish to list. If the misunderstanding runs so deep that you donāt feel their telling of their side of the truth would align with yours, even after talking to them, see if there is an alternate person from that organization who could be a verifier for you. I would be surprised if an agreement couldnāt be reached this way but if not, then Iād pursue conversations with some people around you who you trust about whether or not to list that work experience. I doubt that a gap in employment would make or break an application - I think evidence of honesty and professionalism in your efforts to handle this delicate situation would be more important. But thatās a toughie. Reaching out to your precious employer likely wonāt feel easy but tough issues of professionalism rarely are.
Best of luck!
Did you get to do anything fun for the holidays?
5 days back home! And then a low key New Yearās Eve party at my place :) my partner came out for a visit for part of his holiday which was really really awesome.
Do you have any tips for writing a personal statement/letter for med school? I've somehow ended up where I've never had to even write a cover letter so I could use any help I can get!
Oh thatās a hard question. The med schools I applied to had very specific applications and boxes you needed to fit your experiences into. I didnāt have to write personal letters until I applied to residency.
In general though, START EARLY. Putting yourself into words is hard and will very likely require a ton of revision, reworking, and proofreading.
Know which points youāre trying to get across before you start. Your writing needs direction to be effective.
Think of illustrative examples if thatās something theyāre asking for but figure out how to make them concise or which parts are non-essential that you can omit.
Ask your trusted circle for feedback and to help you think out loud about what youāre trying to communicate. My mom gave tons of her time to me as I worked on my residency letters and it was invaluable.
Hope that helps! Best of luck!

How did you study for the MCAT? I've heard so many conflicting strategies, with some people saying that you must do this or that, so I wanted to know your experience
I scheduled my MCAT for the spring after I completed all my pre-reqs for med school and then consistently worked my way through a set of ExamKracker books, including their practice questions. I think I did about 2 or 3 practice exams as well but I canāt remember exactly.
I think the main thing is being disciplined, regardless of how you choose to study. The next thing is to know how you study. I need to see and write, so I read the books and made my notes. Doing practice questions is very helpful because itās also about examinship and gets you used to the format.
Hope that helps!
How do you know if you stand a chance at getting into medical school?
To be completely honest, I was completely uncertain and anxious about it right up until the day I got in. I had been flat out rejected by another school the day before and was mentally gearing up for another round of applications and hoping Iād get interviews again.
You can look at stats that the schools post if you need to have an idea of what a realistic candidate looks like in ānumbersā like avg GPA or MCAT scores. But in terms of application and interview? Itās honestly a black box. (Some schools might send feedback about your interview after the fact - as the school that rejected me did)
