“Okay so, Leon…” Hunnigan’s voice rumbled on his helmet. The engine was so loud he could barely hear her. “We’re gonna do a race simulation. We want to check the degradation and the pace we’re currently at.”
“Copy.” He down-shifted before entering the last corner, riding through it and gearing again ‘till the engine was screaming.
The car felt fast these past days of tests.
They didn’t have a shitty car last year; at least not like McLaren’s. Leon was able to jump on the podium a couple of times, but not the way everyone expects from Ferrari.
It was just not their time.
Leon pressed the “Drink” button again. Driving this car was exhausting. It’s fast, yes, but also draining and difficult. It’s so demanding that his arms were starting to feel a bit sore, and he's just been driving for an hour now.
The over-steering started at lap 7, too damn soon.
“These tyres are already gone, mate” Leon complained through the radio. He was having problems with left-handed turns, especially turn 10. It’s hard enough as it is; doing it with degradation makes it even worse.
“How is this possible?” He asked again. “The brakes also feel gone.”
“Left front brake temp is climbing faster than we expected,” Hunnigan added.
Leon expected another message from pitwall, some instructions if he should finish the stint and enter boxes. But it took longer than he expected.
“Leon, engineering suggests some lift and coast before arriving at the turns. Don’t be too aggressive with the brakes. Continue the stint.”
“What—”
“Orders from above, Leon.” Hunnigan cut him. It’s been a couple of years now since she’s his race engineer, and she's starting to know him too much now.
He growled without pressing the radio button. Just to let out the frustration of the moment.
If the car doesn’t feel good, why are they making him drive more without checking it?
Looks like the team trusts her more than Leon, who’s actually behind the wheel. They are going blindfolded with what the new chief mechanic says.
Mid-season last year, they announced a revolutionary signing. One of the lead mechanics who worked on the Red Bull last season. The winning car. And also the sister of the current World Champion.
Leon had worked with her a bit during the winter break. At the factory they exchanged some words and feedback at the simulator. But just strictly necessary.
He still doesn’t trust her.
She’s the sister of his biggest rival. She even worked with them last year. What guarantees him that she isn't boycotting Ferrari? That she doesn’t have anything to do with Red Bull now?
“Leon, last lap you were extremely low the last couple of laps. Everything’s alright?”
He blinked rapidly, clearing the fog that was already taking his mind, before responding to her.
“Yeah, sorry.”
✰✰✰
“So, box this lap Leon.”
Finally.
He relaxes his shoulders when the mechanics lifts the car to enter it at the garage.
Leon takes off his helmet once he’s out of the car. All his hair compacted against his skull, sweated due to the effort.
“How’s the time?” He asks Hunnigan, walking to the pit-wall.
“It looks good.” She takes off her headset, letting them hang at her neck. “We’re also done for today. At least you on track.” She nods toward the garage. “They still have a lot of work to do.”
He follows her gaze, straight to the red-haired girl. It looks almost like she’s ginger to fit on this team.
All the mechanics look like they trust her, listening to her words and what they need to check for tomorrow, while she holds a tablet with all the data collected during his session.
“How did the car feel, Leon?” Claire walks towards him, at which he sighs exhausted.
“It was perfect for the first few laps, but after a while at full throttle, the front brakes overheat and the degradation is brutal.”
“Yeah, we saw that in the data. We’ll check.” She nods, looking at the tablet again. “But the car feels good?”
“Yeah,” Leon nodded, “you guys did a great job during the break.”
Even if he doesn’t fully trust her, he has to admit that they worked hard to build this car.
Claire smiled softly, still trying to get used to Leon’s personality.
He’s so intimidating sometimes, like all the other drivers when they’re focused. But one thing the others don't have is the sense of team he has.
It's so different when she worked for Red Bull.
“Leon,” Charlotte, his PR assistant, rushed him with his phone in hand. “You have an interview with Sky Sports in 5. You’re ready?”
He looked at her, running his fingers through his hair trying to look more presentable.
“Yeah, sure. Let's go.” The blonde one waved at Hunnigan before saying goodbye to the entire mechanical team.
✰✰✰
“I’ll catch up with you in a second. I need to grab something”
It was already dark when Leon was finally free from all the media stuff. It’s the thing he hates most about being an F1 driver. He just likes to drive. Wished the other parts were optional.
He was already scolded from Charlotte for forgetting his cap at the garage, so he runs to it to take it before leaving for the hotel.
A stain of light caught him off guard as soon as he reached the box. He looks at his watch again, all the mechanics should already be at the hotel at this time.
But what surprised him the most was who was doing extra hours.
The red ponytail waved near the left front brake. Looking at it like it was something off with it.
Leon knew, but she relied fully on the data.
“So I may be right then?” Claire jumped from her chair, clearly startled, and grabbed her chest firmly.
“God, Leon. Don’t ever do that again, especially when I’m working on the car.” She drops a wrench on the floor, with a little grease on her gloves.
“Sorry,” he chuckled gently. “Didn’t know you were so jumpy.”
“What are you doing here?” She asks, turning his attention back to the car. “Drivers are supposed to be resting.”
“I forgot this,” he walked to where his cap was resting, taking it and spinning it through his finger.
But the red-haired doesn’t look back at him, she’s still too focused on the wheel.
Leon observes her quietly, it's the first time he’s seen her so focused on something.
Claire clicks her tongue shaking her head and gets up from the chair, only to realize that Leon is still there. Shoulder against one of the walls and arms crossed against his chest.
“Even though the data showed that everything was fine, I wanted to check it out for myself.” She wipes away the sweat that was slowly dripping from her forehead. Even though it's late February, the temperature inside the garage felt higher.“I always trust the pilot’s word above everything else, even if this machine says the opposite.”
Leon raised one eyebrow, a bit concerned.
“It didn't look like that after I get out of the car,”
“I know, I know,” Claire excused herself, leaving the car and looking at him again. “I’m still getting used to your driving style and trying to figure how the car will respond to it.”
He nodded. She has a point there. If changing teams as a driver it's hard, he can’t imagine how Claire must’ve struggled.
And the difference at the garage between RedBull and Ferrari it's also very different.
One is fully focused on results, data and winning; while the other fully moves by history, respect and legacy.
“This might come from an aerodynamic problem,” Claire added, taking off her gloves and tossing them onto the workbench. “Or at least, something that starts there.”
Leon tilted his head slightly. “Aero causing brake temps?”
“Indirectly,” she replied, grabbing the tablet again and pulling up a cfd simulation. “If the airflow isn’t stabilizing the front, you’re driving trying to compensate without realizing it.”
He frowned.
She had reached a conclusion that would have taken anyone else considerably longer.
“I want to try a different front wing configuration for tomorrow,” she continued. “It might cost you a bit of pace at first—”
“I don't care,” Leon cut in. “That’s what tests are for, right? To try things out till you find the best result.”
A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips, nodding slowly.
“Good,” Claire said. “Because it might feel worse before it feels better.”
Leon huffed a quiet laugh at that.
“Great. Can’t wait.” Leon finally pushes himself off the wall, adjusting his cap again.
“Just don't make me drive a car that makes me crash into the first wall I come across.”
He could hear her chuckle, as he straightened himself.
“I can’t guarantee anything.” she shrugged, with a silly smile across her face.
Leon held her gaze for a few seconds, noticing the dark bags under her eyes.
“Mechanics are as important as the drivers, you know that?”
Claire let out a quiet breath, glancing back at the car.
“I’m trying to remember that, yeah.” She admitted, softer this time.
She turned away again, already reaching for her tools.
“I’ll just tidy this up a bit and head to the hotel— don’t worry, Kennedy”
Leon didn’t move right away.
He stood in the middle of the garage, watching her move around the place like she already belonged there.
He had spent the entire day questioning her.
Now, he wasn’t so sure.
Leon adjusted his cap, turning towards the exit this time.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Redfield”
“Good night, Leon.”
He stepped out into the cold night air, the noise of the paddock long gone.
His Ferrari was parked all alone by now.
With only two weeks ahead, they need to set up the winning car. He won’t let Chris win this time.
At least not again.
Okay so first of all i want to apologize if i get too technical about anything car-related. I'm not a professional or have a degree in mechanical, so also sorry if anything I write doesn't have any sense lol. I think its the first time i feel comfortable enough to write cuz i feel i have enough knowledge to write about F1, like ive been watching and debating with my father for so freaking long about it.
Also, I hope you enjoy it as much as i'm enjoying writing this!!
Its my first time writing a full fanfiction, so i hope i stay constant even with my lack of time.
