Sad to learn of John McLellan's passing. A real creative spirit behind the drums who framed silence and sound unlike any other musician. I remember first meeting John while I was living in Boston and caught him from time to time around NYC.
THIS album.
Emmylou Harris âWrecking Ballâ
I first heard Emmylou Harrisâ âWrecking Ballâ in 1999 while living in Somerville, Massachusetts. Iâd been playing with singer-songwriters and was checking out a lot of bluegrass and country music. I think Ed Jurdi (from Band of Heathens) introduced me to the album. I knew Daniel Lanois produced it and as a Canadian living in the United States I followed his work with a sense of patriotism (I only recently learned that he was born in Hull, QuĂŠbec just across the river from Ottawa where I grew up). This album is connected to my last album post (Robbie Robertsonâs âStoryvilleâ) with guest appearances by musicians also associated with New Orleans including Cyrille Neville and Brian Blade. U2âs drummer, Larry Mullen Jr., also plays beautifully and really sets the feel on the only album Iâve heard him on apart from his âworking bandâ.

Album Rediscovery of the Day: Robbie Robertson âStoryvilleâ
Watching a documentary on the relationship between Bob Dylan and The Band (âDown in the Floodâ) led me back to this album. I first remember seeing it on cassette in my fatherâs collection and hearing âNight Paradeâ on the radio in the early 90s. The warmth of the music and the clarity of the tracks hit me first. Beautiful contributions from a whoâs who of New Orleans, studio, and simply legendary musicians including Ziggy Modeliste, Jerry Marotta, Alex AcuĂąa, Neil Young, Ndugu Chancler, Aaron and Ivan Neville, Glen Andrews (Trombone Shorty), and Kermit Ruffins to name a few. Great songs about one of my favorite cities on earth.
