Artists statement

I love exploring themes of absurdity, horror, humour, and identity. My art often includes monsters, animals, and references to pop culture. Simply put, I love making art of the things I adore, exploring what they mean to me, and how they’ve shaped me. I want to share with you, not only the final product, but also how I made them. Whilst I love to show of my art, I think it’s just as important to show more than just the final product in hopes that I can encourage others to also make things. Growing up, I always saw the things other people would make and post online, but it never occurred to me that I could also just make things myself. I think only ever seeing the final product never made me think about the fact that a person made them.

The actual photo is a headshot of me smiling and is the only thing I have from the photography studio. As this blog exist for an assignment I need to post something but I didn't want to post an image of my face online. So I got permission from my lecturer to censor my face in any way I wanted since he saw the actual photo. So shout out to my lecturer for being a chill guy. I was going to just put a black bar over my face but he suggested I do it in a creative way :)

Title

This photo started with my lecturer taking a headshot of me and converting them into film negatives to put in the enlarger

we used photographic paper that became darker in areas with more light exposure so the image would become inverted once it was developed

it was developed in a series of chemical baths in the dark room

this is a test strip that I made to see what my exposure time should be. Each section (which is hard to see because the scan is blurry) lasted 3 additional seconds as it gets darker and my time for the final photo was 15 seconds

i also made a few photos where a placed flower shaped beads on top of the photographic so i’d end up with white flowers in my hair but i didn’t end up liking the way they turned out

The character depicted is Ink!Sans (or Ink), a fan character made by @comyet for the videogame Undertale.

I then flipped the sketch and transferred it to the lino using graphite paper.

I chose to carve Ink due to the “tattoos” on his ribcage. I wanted to challenge myself to see how fine I could make the details within each of the swirls. I used him to practice control with the carving tool in both the fine details and in large smooth shapes. I struggled heavily with carving the design due to the smudged and sketchy pencil lines. Halfway through I took a photo of the linocut and drew over it digitally in order to finalize the design and better. Going forward when creating a linocut, I will draw a sketch then scan it and draw over it digitally.

Witness my Horrible Fucking Creeture

This drypoint was made to experiment with tetra pak etch printing for the first time. The prints are made by scratching with a pointed stick onto the silver lining of the inside of a carboard milk carton to create an intaglio print. As this was my first time using this medium I focused more on experimenting with tools and techniques that creating a polished final artwork.

Behold a Man

I started with a digital drawing i did a number of months ago then sketched it onto the linoleum. This time it was covered with a layer of red ink to make it easier to tell where you had already carved whilst also making any drawing on it more visible.

This is a realistic looking ceramic apple. I tried to make it look realistic enough so that I could place it in a fruit bowl and trick my family into thinking it was real (which was successful).

The fish depicted on this bowl is a coelacanth. Coelacanths were believed to have gone extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, 66 million years ago but in 1938 were discovered to still be a living species without changing. They are my favorite fish, and I chose to depict them to try creating a detailed design with sgraffito

This is a ceramic water jug made to look like a bird. The complex patterns were inspired by a combination of the works of Julian Francis Miholics (@pansylair) (specifically Allosaurus fragilis) and the cover artwork for the album “SELF-ISH” by Will Wood and the Tapeworms.

I made them to practice the pinch pot technique. I made two pinch pots and joined them to make a hollow sphere, then smoothed and sculpting it further into an apple. I painted with colored slip with a dry brush technique to create realistic color variation and used a real apple for reference.

The pokeball was made with the same method but was focused on carving and painting the additional shapes. this also provided practice in creating a sphere. this one was much smoother

SELF-ISH Bird

This project was made to practice the slab rolling method for creating ceramics. It was made be rolling out clay with a slab roller then cutting it into a rectangle to then roll into a tube. 4 small cuts were made on one end, folded like a box then pressed together to create the bottom. Then it was sculpted to create the lip of the jug/beak of the bird and its eyes. I painted the patterns with colored slip in order to practice line control and creating detail on pottery.

this bowl was made with the coil technique. it started with a disk of clay then i rolled out long snakes of clay the where coiled around the edge to build up the walls, then were smoothed and shaped

i then painted it with coloured slip then used to sgraffito method to scratch in the design of a coelacanth

it was then glazed and fired

Eyes of the Claydol

to create eyes of the claydol i used the same method of cutting out textured paper to create texture with the roller printer. I cut identical circles and used a hole punch for the center

when cutting the circles out of the metal my lecturer operated a circle cutting press for me (as i was not allowed to) to ensure they were all identical

This fucking ring is sized to only fit around my middle finger. I made it in a fit of frustration in response to an incredibly complex design failing disastrously.
