Alastor followed closely, smiling at the sparse “ooo”s his presence granted

“We keep walking straight,” Polly started. “Then we take a left turn.”

Alastor began taking notes.

Polly took initiative to lead the way. “I remember walking back here after school when I was younger,” Polly explained. “In fact, I was really young! Where do the years go?”

“I often wonder the same, dear Polly….”

“Time can fly by in the blink of an eye, can’t it? And yet, sometimes, it goes by so excruciatingly slow…”

“Like a snail….”

“Especially so when you’re in troubling times!…here in Los Satanio, it sometimes felt as if I were stuck in the same day—one without seeing my momma very much. But I’m in much better spirits now!”

“I’m glad! I do hope we may see your mother again.”

Alastor looked at the building in front of them. “Quite the on the nose name…. I suppose it does fit my imagination!”

“We shall!” Alastor cheered. “As long as you’re comfortable, of course”

Alastor offered her a gentle smile. He’s such a good dad

“My charge here was looking for her mother, she wishes to reconnect with her. Polly?”

Alastor smiled at Polly, before turning to the receptionist and tilting his head oh so slightly. Well?

Alastor offered a small smile to Polly.

Alastor’s ears flicked. “Hm…. Did she say where she was going?”

“N-No, sir! But she did seem to be in a tizzy ‘fore she left. I-I asked her if she was goin’ to be alright, and she said that she’d be fine.”

Alastor nods at this. “I see….”

Alastor rested a hand on Polly’s shoulder as they began walking away. “Are you alright, dear Polly?”

“I’ll be with you, kiddo.”

Polly attempted to smile at him. “Thank you, Mr. Alastor.”

“Of course!”

“So…uhm.” Polly broke eye contact with Alastor. She dusted off her skirt nervously, clearly more alert than usual. “Shall we get going?”

“We shall.” Alastor’s ears flick in worry. But he knows not to push things.

“Okay.” Polly took a deep breath, trying her best to remain as calm as possible. She slowly opened the front door of the hotel, holding it for Alastor.

Alastor stepped out, gesturing for Polly to follow.

Alastor smiles gently at her. “I’ve seen my fair share of rough places, dear Polly.”

“Ah,” Polly hummed. Her ears perked downwards. “I suppose being away from that place is…a sprawling relief, but I can’t help but feel a tinge of guilt for running away.”

A hand rests on her shoulder. “I understand how you feel. About running away.”

Polly looked up at Alastor, surprised. “You do?”

Alastor nods, his ears flicking from side to side

Polly frowned. “It’s never a nice feeling, is it?”

“Never….”

“If it was anything similar to my own experience, I’m sorry you had to endure it all alone. You don’t have to, anymore.” Polly tried to smile at him.

Alastor returned her smile, gently ruffling her hair. “I’m glad I have my- what’s the word? Found family?”

“Yes! Found family,” Polly confirmed. “We’re both very lucky, aren’t we?”

“The luckiest.”

“The same goes for myself,” she said, looking up at Alastor. “You and His Majesty have been nothing but good to me!”

Alastor smiled at the bunny demon. “I’m happy to hear you hold us in high regard.”

“I do hope you see me similarly! That I’ve been a satisfactory stepdaughter.” She fidgeted with her fingers. “If so…I’ll keep that in the back of my mind in the midst of the orphanage’s mayhem.”

“I hold all my children very highly in my mind, I love you all dearly.”

Polly damn-near started crying. “H-Honest?”

“Cross my heart and hope to die, lest sinner’s flesh get in my eye!”

Alastor offered his own determined smile. “Thats our Polly!”

She chuckled, beginning to walk again. “Hopefully, I’ll be able to keep it that way.”

Alastor stayed by her side. “I’m positive you will.”

“We’ve got to get out of town, now…to find it,” said Polly. “It may take a little while.”

“Let’s start than. You take the lead, ok?”

Alastor followed, his arms folded behind his back.

“O…kay. Looks like we’re gonna have to take the bus.”

“Once more?”

Alastor hmmed, nodding at this. “Looks like it’d take about an hour.”

Polly nodded as well. “Okay! Now, we wait.”

“Indeed we do.”

Alastor stepped over and sat down beside her.

Alastor nods, smiling. “Indeed- I do hope it goes well.”

“I’m sure Mr. Vox is happy to see how close I am to finishing this mission, up in Heaven,” Polly says, becoming slightly more somber.

Alastor looked up into the sky, his eyes watering. “…. I’m positive….”

Alastor’s ears stood on end. “Polly-! Polly, my dear, you need not apologize! …. We all deserve to mourn.”

“I just—never want to upset you,” she said, visibly relaxing a little bit.

“You haven’t, my dear.”

“O-Okay. Good. I just…Mr. Vox dances in my thoughts at every waking moment. As the first person who showed me kindness in such a big city…”

“I imagine he stays in everyone who cares for him’s thoughts, you know? He’s a good guy deep down.”

“Of course!” Polly agreed. “He gave me a roof over my head when I had nowhere to go. A kind soul, he is.”

“Indeed…. I hope he’s doing well up there.”

Alastor stands up, stretching in preparation.

“Indeed! You?”

The rabbit demon nodded, grinning before hopping on the bus.

Alastor walked on behind her, acknowledging the bus driver with a tip of the head.
