COMMUNITAS: A SYMBIOSIS OF CO HOUSING EXPERIENCE IN THE PHILIPPINES

Socialized Housing experience in the Philippines is commonly designed for more secured way of living than of being socially inclusive with the community. This commonly results into: poor neighborhood relationship; unbalanced community and security; lack community participation; and poor shared values.
With such, how do we define the Filipino community, and what is the identity we want to give them, in order for us to let them live the life worth living?
The brief calls for the design of a road less subdivision for a 100-family. And the challenge is to break out from the conventional way of housing experience in the Philippines, an idea that led the team in combining Co housing experience with FIlipino noble traits. Co housing is the idea of designing private houses into a cluster with a common shared space strategically accessible from all households, purposed as a venue for communal activities like dining and doing daily chores inside the neighborhood.
Designed on stilts, the modular type of housing created protrusions, recesses and open spaces which maximized airflow and visual connection around the neighborhood. This also portrays the noble Filipino trait, Bayanihan; traced from a common tradition in Philippine towns where community members volunteer to help a family move to a new location.
