"And just like that, I was the last."
INCOMING YAP SESH - PERSONAL HALO AU STUFF - MODERATE CANON DIVERGENCE (I promise it is fun though)
Been thinking about Bronco a lot and how lonely he is. Between him being a Spartan I project candidate (Spartan I project was not the Orion project my AU, they were two seperate things) and also receiving Spartan II augments, he feels very much like he belongs to the former group, but only the latter are still alive. His only surviving brother (not actually his blood brother but a brother nontheless) that made it through both augments like he did, died while he watched. He can't help but feel hopeless and bitter and isolated because of it. He is only driven by his failure in a way that could be called destructive and eternal. Never forgetting. Never letting go. Never letting acceptance overtake his guilt.
He is alone in a way that an endling of a species is, the last of his kind. Never to find solace or comfort in another like him. Sure, the Gen IIs are similar and he has a deep sense of kinship with them, but there is that disconnect. That sense of unbelonging. The sense, that no matter how hard he tries to articulate how he feels, can never be spoken and understood. He is the last iron star in a dead universe, he is a birdsong with nothing ever replying, he is a discordant note in a symphony. Not belonging anymore, not destined to ever return.
He is the last of a distorted, wounded breed that were always destined to die swiftly and silently, ordered so by unseen hands; with not even a headstone for their souls to rest upon. He mourns for the ghosts that haunt him, and fights for the one he feels he could have saved.
Or maybe he knew that he was doomed from the start, and he knew how lonely he would be. It must be cold buried wherever his siblings were, and he sadly has no warmth to give other than the fragmented memories that are relived in every inch of his skull.
Anyway, yeah. I'll probably have to start explaining his lore in full someday but enjoy my rambling.
