but ykw at least i'm not on mount everest. at least i'm not paying tens of thousands of dollars to slowly suffocate in a 300-person line at the gates of hell. never in my life will i have to be steered in a hypoxic stupor through the maze of poop and corpses atop mount everest. on this earth a lot of horrible things can happen to you without your permission but there are a few that you have to opt into. you can just say no thanks! and be guaranteed never to have to be on mount everest. much to be grateful for actually

I actually have so many thoughts about fixing up your own car vs hot wiring others' vs hitch hiking vs calling shotgun etc. Where do you have the most control over your body? Where do you feel safe? Where do you feel powerful? Where do you feel protected? Where do you dream? And there comes Bobby as the answer to what safety and home is, the hub of fixing up your shattered, twisted car.

If you run away on the bus is it a happy ending or just a temporary stop? If you jump out of the car to hitchhike is it taking back control or is it launching yourself to the winds of fate? If you can't drive your own car is it safer to drive another or is it depersoning? If your car is stolen are you inconvenienced or are you vulnerable?

literally one of the first things he does is crash a car into a house on purpose. what the hell

dean taking on the burden and responsibility of driving as a form of care and protection. he can't control others on the road but he trusts himself to be sharp and alert and keep everyone safe. if something goes wrong it's on him and he will carry that guilt. also dean had to learn how to drive young, way before the normal age. and that is likely in part due to the fact that there may have been times when john might not have been fit to drive, whether because he was drunk or injured. this is another area in which dean was expected to be responsible and dependable.

one of my favorite bits from s4 (which is high praise bc s4 is one of my favorite seasons of the show) surprisingly is the panic room scene because they do such a good job of digging into sam's subconscious. mary representing the part of him that wants to enable (the addiction). dean representing the part of him that feels like a freak (the shame). and of course his younger self who is aghast at what he's turned into (self awareness). like it's projection boy at his most projection-y and i eat it up every single time
