“This is the Druidic cross of which the Prophet spoke to you. It was sculpted before the birth of Christ.”
“Is it possible?” gasped Jehan. And the master replied, “It’s time the news (editor’s note: NEWS - North, East, West, South) was broken to you, and this cross comes at a most appropriate moment. The whole of Druidic knowledge of earth and heaven adequately sets forth a relevant theogony, for whomever wishes to know, of the origins of life, the belief in the survival of the soul, eternal life, a unique God, and the links between divinity and solar, human, animal, vegetable, and mineral magnetism. Two figures encapsulate, in part, this heritage: the zodiac and the Druidic cross. The Zodiac? You will learn its lore; I shall speak of it in good time – perhaps when we reach Saulieu, the place of the Sun. But first the Druidic cross. The inhabitants hereabout, having found it near the sacred spring, put it on a pedestal and worship it as the symbol of Christ the Savior, but it comes from much farther away than that.”
The master had just taken out his square and compass. He drew in the dust of the road three concentric circumferences, each of which had a diameter triple that of the preceding. “The first circle, the greatest, with a diameter of 81, is the circle of Keugant,” said he. “This is the chaos where nothing exists but God. Good! It is out of this Keugant that the unique God causes soul to come, which souls then pass into the second circle which is that of Abred, with a diameter of 27. This is the circle of terrestrial life, wherein souls play out their destinies between good and evil. Then, according to the choice they have made, they will return to the first circle of non-existence, that of Keugant, or they will raise themselves into the third circle of Gwenwed, with a diameter of 9 – that of the supreme ascension to God. This is the definitive victory over the bestialities and temptations encountered in Abred.”
He then traced the two perpendicular diameters, producing a linear cross that paralleled from the start to finish each of these diameters. He then traced two straight lines at distances of 8.5 units in diameter, corresponding to, and determined thereby, a cross whose equal branches (he quite insisted they be equal) were 18 units in size and delimited a central square of 18 units per side.
From each angle of this square taken as a center, le Gallo drew a circle of 4.5 radial units. These four circles bit at their base into the branches of the cross. He stood up and said, not without emphasis, “And voila, the Druidic cross.”
Jehan could hardly keep himself from laughing out loud, but he did not want to hurt his master’s feelings and contended himself with asking naively, “But why these 9s, 27s, and 81s? Why these 18s, these 4.5s? Why this entire compendium of which I understand not a drop?”
“Because the pentacle thus constructed one can find all the knowledge acquired by druidism on condition that one can poke one’s nose in without – snuffling.”
“The Devil! replied Jehan, chin in hand. "And why is that?”
The master rose, mounted his mule, and ordered the departure. When Jehan had rejoined the march at his side, he continued, “Because the circumference of Gwenwed divided by nine gives the measure of the druidic foot, which is…?”
He had asked a question, and Jehan, who was quite embarrassed, mumbled, “Er…er…”
“0.31415 and so on to the innumerable grains of dust!” I taught you that the other day. You must remember it – it’s important! 31415 is the dimension of the base that serve to erect the great stones from Carnac in Armonica to Karnak in Egypt – and Gavrinis in Britian, to boot. The number allows us to succeed in the squaring of the circle and finally comes to rest in the construction of our Christian sanctuaries. We have preserved it!“
The caravan had resumed its journey, Jehan regulated his steps according to the lead mule in an unvarying rhythm that, along with the monotonous voice of the master, gradually led him into a marvelous world that he could believe to be a dream but which is actually what one finds in the circle of Gwenwed. It was a bit of a foretaste of the other world, where it seemed to Jehan that he could enter and walk about inside by a simple effort of the imagination.
The devil if he thought at that moment of the odor of Queen’s nacreous skin! He listened to the voice of Master le Gallo, who continued his teaching. He spoke of the dolmen of Autun, very close by, of its standard design, which oddly suggested that of which a certain Plato spoke in the Critias – which is not surprising, since the Druids had formed and initiated the Greek world!… The Druids! Refugees from Atlantis!
So spoke le Gallo, perched atop his big white mule, while Jehan, leading it by the bridle, walked as in a dream. Only three hours later, Jehan clapped his hand to his forehead and exclaimed, "Master… the serpents? What of the serpents engraved on the cross?”
“Yes, what about the serpents?”
“The light. They are the emblem of the protective and divine light, the Prophet told me. That’s why they are engraved on the cross.”
“Well, of course, rabbit,” affirmed the master, as calmly as you please. “You are not done with astonishment. The Druidic work contains a message, rabbit, which I shall divulge to you day by day, and which you will transmit in turn to those you consider worthy to be taught. It is necessary to maintain the ancient knowledge of the Word of Light, creator of life. And his appearance in the prologue of the Gospel of Saint John obliges me to hold hard as iron that the Celtic spirit was the pre-Christian spirit par excellence. That is why we swear our oaths on the Gospel of John. We are Johannites!”
He sniffed and continued, “And I have not told you everything, for in one life one cannot say everything about the knowledge of the druids because it is so vast. The four circles that I have drawn at the axis of the cross also represent the four elements, but the Druids add in a fifth at the center of the cross, which they call the Great Serpent, or Vouivre.
