This ruby ring is an intricate token left with a baby at the Foundling Hospital in 1752, featuring a golden key on one side and a padlock on the other. ⁠ Inscribed with ‘he who neglects me loses me’, this token was brought with a child when they were left in the care of the Foundling Hospital, as a way of the mother identifying her child should she ever be able to reclaim them. Records show that the ring was left with a note that included Psalm 23, ('the Lord is my shepherd'), and was enclosed in a red and white ribbon in the shape of a rose, which is now lost. The note also identifies the smaller stones as a ruby and a diamond. Through research conducted by Janette Bright and Gillian Clark, this token has been matched to Harriet Littleton, renamed Harriott Woodhall, who was admitted to the Hospital in 1752 at seven weeks old and survived to adulthood. We know very little about most of the women who left their children at the Hospital. Something as valuable as this ring being left as a token hints that some mothers may have been from wealthier backgrounds - or that she simply wanted to leave her most precious thing with her baby.

Knowing your country’s folklore comes in handy more often than you’d think.

It’s not that long ago my mom was talking about some Danish period drama she had been watching where at some point a woman kills her newborn baby she had out of wedlock so as not to be ostracized because the father abandoned her and my mom went “Tha poor baby and that poor women but what were women like her supposed to do? What a horrible time”

And I could helpfully add “That’s why we have mylings in Scandinavian folklore. They’re the ghosts of babies that were left in nature to die for this exact reason and it happened so often people believed that if you saw one there would be more nearby and they would crowd you until you got crushed under their weight” (should be noted we use the word genganger which means “those who walk again” and can be used for anything from ghosts to zombies to vampires to anything that was dead and came back hence why they can be ghosts that crush you. The lines are very blurred)

The horrified look on her face really added something to the conversation.
