Chatterbook: A book for young children to encourage child/adult interaction

Chatterbook investigates whether a children’s activity book can help create interactions/ ‘feeling state’ conversations that allow the adult and child to explore their own emotions and those of others. Using the principles of emotional literacy, a world of dog characters invite the reader to take part in a sequence of activities and ‘chats’ that take them on a journey to discover and deepen their relationship with their emotions and ultimately promote closeness and understanding.

The Moonlight Band: Visual language exploration through the form of a picture book.

A 32-page picture book for children and adults. The story is about a dreadful singer, Mori, who desires to share his joy of singing with someone. He is unable to find an appreciative audience until he meets the equally dreadful Moonlight Band. The aim of the project is to express that while you cannot make everybody appreciate what you do, if you just enjoy the process of doing what you love, eventually you will attract like-minded people.

Doggerland Radio

A narrative world-building piece, Doggerland Radio centres on a custom-built audio player embedded into a vintage R300 Roberts radio. Listeners can tune the radio using the central dial to find the different stations broadcasting from the ghostly nation of Doggerland while looking at pieces of recovered ephemera in the form of a map and an old book from its public library.

The piece can act both as a work of narrative world-building and also as a means by which to relax, emulating the tone and feel of late-night radio broadcasts such as The Shipping Forecast.

How I Felt: A soft-sculpture exploration of the experience of living with chronic undiagnosed pain and illness, and an attempt at healing through making.  

Inspired by my personal experience with undiagnosed pain and illness, I have created a felted Sick Suit that makes visible the burden this experience has placed on me, both physically and mentally. Accompanying the Sick Suit are a collection of felted votive offerings, which give my desire to heal a physical form. The act of felting is a kind of alchemy, transforming individual fibers into a strong solid object. Through the making of this work I hoped to encourage a similar transformation, from weak to strong, within myself. How I Felt culminates in a series of self-portrait photographs, juxtaposing the heavy with the amusing, reminding us of the importance of keeping a sense of humor through difficult times.

My Favourite Pet

A 32-page children’s picture book to teach children about the responsibility of owning a pet. In the story, a young girl’s request for a pet is met by resistance from her parents who explain the various disadvantages and concerns. Through contacting animals of nature, finally she learns to appreciate the animals she sees in nature and no longer feels a need to own them.

Inspired by my Auntie Kitty's diaries, Kitty is a graphic novel told in a series of chronological stories. Landscape of Curiosity

An investigation into the persuasive power of drawing through the creation an imaginary world of plants, sufficiently well informed and represented to convince the audience that they may exist. The sculpted 3-D ‘Plantscape’ is accompanied by a 14-page booklet further describing the plants from the installation.
