Seventh Update (4/28/2026)
The last day of class was today. It felt very daunting that this was my last class before commencement next saturday. Regardless, I can proudly say that my game is finally ready to be uploaded and awaiting final polishing.
Since the last time I've published an update, I made a breakthrough with the game over screen as it was giving me some difficulty. Before, despite being completed, the button was not allowing me to interact with it and not listening to the command. However, I finally managed to figure it out and now the game over screen is up and running! Now it's the tutorial for the levels of the game. Initially, I wanted to implement a tutorial UI for the player to understand the controls of the game. I have to add some edits to the graphic but it shouldn't be too difficult because I still have the original files on my school canva account. As the last week draws near, I plan to upload my game to itch.io since I heard it was the easiest to upload (if embedded with HTML). Before publishing the finalized game, I plan to do one last test play and then see how it looks like displayed on itch.io interface. If there are any adjustment's needed to be made, I'll reconfigure on the initial file. I don't have much to show but I hope I can share the link to my game soon! A lot of things are coming up this up coming week and I'm both nervous but excited at the same time. Good luck to everyone and I hope to see you all in the near future! Bye!
Sixth Update (4/13/2026)
In the last stretch of our spring semester, time is moving at a rapid pace that seems impossible to catch up with. Even so, there were so many accomplishments made within the time frame of the last update to now. As of yesterday, I can proudly say that the game is further close to completion! From the moment you enter the game to the last stretch in act 3, Naupaka Reunion is in its final stages and very little polishing is needed to make it complete.
Now the hiccups, despite it being near completion, there are a few add ons that need to make it feel like a game worth playing. For instance, the UI for the tutorials need to be implemented before the start of each level. Although the graphics is finished for them, it's a matter of adding the buttons and scripts to ensure the codes adhear to the command. Same goes for the game over screen. The UI shows it works but the commands are not adhering to the command of showing when it needs to. All very minuscule tasks but it makes the overall playthrough feel more polished and finalized before submitting its final product. I also wanted to implement camera shake command to make the cutscenes feel more immersive but other than that, that's pretty much the tasks needed to complete Naupaka Reunion.
In the projected weeks to come, I hope to be able to submit my game to Sharla and present my semester long work to anyone who decides to play it. I'm so excited to showcase my game and can't wait to share with you all on why sharing Kanaka ʻŌiwi stories is important through this project. Until then, I wish everyone good luck on the capstone projects. Almost there!
Fifth Update (3/31/2026)
From this point on, our class has entered the post-production: the phase where everything comes together. From the very beginning of this semester, I thought the task of creating my own video game was so daunting and intimidating to me. It isn't because of creating my own story for the game, this came natural to me, it was the thought of coding the game that intimidated me, because of the endless probabilities of something being wrong from one simple line of code.
Since the last update, I can confidently say that I'm approaching the final stages of completing my capstone project. Each segment (Level, cutscenes, etc) is interwoven with one another and is playable for anyone to try. As of now, there's the matter of transitioning from level to cutscenes that is not functioning properly. Again, something minor but can be fixed before anything else. I also began working on a google form for the game as its meant to act as feedback form to improve on the base game.
Until the next update, I hope to fix the minor setbacks so that way the game can be playable to the full extent. Afterwards, I hope to polish the game (audio, functions, etc) and add the link to the google form at the end of the game. As I approach the last stretch of the semester, I can't wait to share what I have created these past few months with you all as well as look forward to everyone else's projects too! Until the next update, good luck to everyone! We're almost there!
Fourth Update (3/10/2026)
As of yesterday, it's the mark of week 9! From the last time, I feel like a lot has happened when, in actuality, not that many obstacles were encountered. To start off, I met Kumu Kari, the lab director of Create(x) lab at West Oahu, through a mutual. After explaining my capstone project and shared interest in game coding, she extended her assistance to me for any feedback on the coding aspect of things. So for that, I'm somewhat reassured to have that aid.
Furthermore, I've begun the completion of all major cutscenes along with the main menu. After some trials and errors, the finalized menu is up and running and it has a seamless transition into the first cutscenes. From what I can remember, there weren't any major obstacles that I've encountered, while trying to create the cutscenes and/or the menu. The only hurdle I've really encountered was the procrastination to get the menu done and move on to the next work in progress segment.
For the next two weeks, I'm hoping to finally start working on the gameplay aspect of the game. So far, I've started with creating the main character and getting the collision down so the player can freely move. In spite of that, it's still a long way to go, in terms of adding codes and putting everything together. I still have to think of other aspects to add to the final game (I.E music, sound effects, camera work). But first things first: gameplay!
Until the next update, have some screenshots I took of my capstone pitch from todays class meeting! See you in the next two weeks! Last stretch of the production phase!

Third Update! (2/24/2026)
As of yesterday, our class is officially on week 7 out of the 15 week spring semester. Now more than ever feels like a definite race against the clock; the production for our projects; polishing; feedback; etc. Right now, it feels like a in between place to me as I'm still trying to navigate how to code and which code will do exactly as scripted. Thankfully, I made a breakthrough last night as the past three or so days was nonstop all nighters to perfect the foundation of my code. Now I'm at a point where the games basic codes is established, along with the scene tree (foundation of game), so that means I can continue to add in the sprites (graphics) among other things before testing it out the game itself.
One hiccup that I've encountered is the camera code is having a hard time troubleshooting the command. There are errors within the code so I have to brush up on that as well. Another hiccup, more so a concern of mine, is to be on top of things, especially with how fast time is moving and with commencement coming up as well. Regardless, with the breakthrough's that I've encountered, I feel like I feel more or less neutral about how my capstone is turning out; projects progressing slowly but surely but I know it could be in a better spot.
For the upcoming days, I want to at least begin the process of bringing my graphics and testing out the game, at least once. I also have an idea for a main menu hud so I can work on that in the meantime. Hopefully, until the next update, there'll be a significant amount of progress in the last stretch of the spring semester. Until then! Bye!
Second Update! (2/10/2026)
Second post for the semester! To start off, one of my biggest hurdles is the feeling of inadequacy and falling behind. Despite my biggest strength in being narrative story telling and creative writing, my capstone project relies heavily on the game design aspect along with coding. From my past courses, despite having taken a coding class, I still don’t feel as confident as I would like in my skills. Just the uncertainty, along with the fear and pressure of potentially failing is what’s making me procrastinate in my project.
However, there are a few of my peers that I’ve expressed this too. They too feel the same way and Professor Yaps words of encouragement means a lot to me as well. Hearing the different perspectives and words of encouragement means a lot to me and motivates me to move forward. Speaking of my peers, we’ve had a group study session yesterday, which felt very productive. In spite of the weather issues, we did our best to meet and met up on zoom. We all held each other accountable and continued to work on our respective projects.
As this week is almost halfway, I have written a developing note/brainstorm document that helps me flesh out the overview of some Hawaiian mythology or folklore. From this, I try to brainstorm ways of how it can loop back into my Original characters circumstance — as the whole point of the character is learning more about Hawaiian culture as they don’t have past knowledge. In addition, in the same document I am seeing which game mechanics work for these stories and how to convey it in a fun and interactive way.
My hopes is, by the end of the week, to stick with a specific story and game mechanic so that way I can start the development of the game design, by the end of the first production week. Hopefully by the next post, there’s some type of progress that is worth showing and I’ll still be meeting with Sharla and Professor Yap for their guidance and feedback.
Until then, I hope all goes well within these next two weeks. Bye for now!
First Update! (1/27/2026)
First post of the spring semester - no pressure! I guess, even before the start of the semester, I was a bit worried about how I was going to plan out the work for my project. Even from going to the classes these past two weeks, it felt stressful.
However, this past Friday, I met with Professor Christopher Yap to discuss my story and his guidance on gaming narrative (ideal outcome for my capstone project). The meeting was very enlightening and his words really reassured me in my final decision with pursuing this capstone project.
As of now, my biggest obstacle is to ultimately figure out how I'm supposed to showcase this project, not just narratively, but potentially through a prototype of sorts.
Until the next update, I hope to have met with Sharla, discussing my deliverable, and met with Professor Yap for further advice on my game narrative. Furthermore, I hope to finalize the narrative to use as a skeleton for my project.
But until then, a bit scared, hopefully it'll be going according to plan! Bye for now!
Hi everyone! Welcome to my journey of my capstone project! In this video, I'll be introducing myself and sharing a little sneak peak with my deliverable project.
I also would like to mention a quick shoutout to a previous UHWO senior and what resonated with me from their experience and deliverable.
I hope you all will follow me in this tricky but exciting endeavor as this will ultimately lead to my commencement ceremony. Thank you and I wish all my fellow peers the best of luck! Until next time!
