❤️🔥 HEART ON FIRE — what angers you the most? what triggers this anger, and how do you cope with it? what does this anger feel like, if you had to describe it?
"not to get too... deep or philosophical about it, but the most honest answer i can give is 'injustice.' doesn't have to be massive ; institutional, or systemic, though i'll tell you for free that's likely to rile me up the most. sometimes it's the smaller things, just someone being treated unfairly for one daft reason or another. i'd describe it as a burning rage, easily fuelled and hard to put out but not all-consuming. if i let it do that i'd be too upset to get anything done. and i cope with it by looking for the alternative -- the good in the world. because there's always some somewhere."

having spent the last few hours hunched over his desk and as such doing his 'best impression of a shrimp' as maeve had so aptly put it not long ago, a stroll around the school before he started to head home had never been so needed. it was always peaceful, but slightly unsettling trailing the hallways when they were devoid of students. even more so when most of the staff had long gone home too. lights on in an office just ahead at least suggested brendan wasn't the only one burning the proverbial midnight oil.
he approached, knocking before popping his head around the door to greet the social worker tucked inside with a lopsided smile. "good evening," stepping carefully over the threshold, brendan leant casually against the wall. "planning on going home anytime soon?" a brief pause, he put on his well-practiced stern face. "be warned, if you say no... i will be chasing you out. or worse, i'll have to call your da. and you don't want that now, do ye?"
"i'm having fun!" freddie laughed, holding his hands up in mock surrender. "and hey, if your celebracy means that i get to spend more time with you ... well, who am i to complain." he shrugged. he clapped brendan on the back and lent forwards so that he could order the two of them another drink each. he was a hypocrite. it had taken him more than just a year to start dating after his marriage had ended. it wasn't just because he felt like he was cheating, every time he even thought about someone else. it was also because he didn't want to open himself up to that again. he didn't want to bring someone into his life, potentially his daughters life, and for it to end in ruin. he had wanted to protect himself for that kind of heart ache. especially now as he was being honest with himself. he knew what he wanted but what if they didn't want him? "we don't have to talk about it. i just think it's a crying shame that you're not putting yourself out there. that's all."
he snorted a laugh involuntarily, "so that's you and the catholic church over the moon with my celibacy ; grand. i expect i'll be sainted when i die." brendan himself flipped between the belief that two years was long enough to wait and that it was far too soon. his fractured heart, that generally won the day, said the latter and his finger still felt strangely naked without the gold band. a heavy, overdramatic sigh heaved and he shot freddie a sympathetic look. "'fraid you're stuck with me a good while yet. possibly forever. and ye have me all to yourself. lucky you," he rolled his eyes. "please, let's not talk about this. i've already got ciara tryin' to get me to download apps and all sorts. like i've any idea what i'd be doin' on those things. and apparently maeve put her up to it, so the betrayal's comin' from inside my own house." a pause, then, he traced the pattern of the bar counter's wood. "how did you know when you were ready again? i mean, did ye know, or did you just... go for it?"
"Not a fan of Halloween then? Don't say you're the house to pass out toothbrushes for all of the kids." Quinn mused, slightly joking - clearly picking up on the other's stance though. They differed obviously. "I mean, not that there isn't anything wrong with that but who doesn't love free candy?" At least for the occasion. The whole warning when one was a kid - don't take candy from strangers rang clear. "Yeah, I think I was just curious to hear what others thought. I definitely may have bought a few things already." He motioned towards the bags he currently was carrying.
"i wouldn't say that," he dragged the last vowel out, confronted with having to work out what his feelings on the holiday were. "ah god, no. i'm not the halloween grinch... if the sweets i get last long enough to be handed out it'll be a bloody miracle ; my daughter and i are both big on the sweet snacking," brendan was unquestionably worse than maeve on the self-control front. "ah, well, y'know, you're allowed a bit of fun, even as an adult. are ye pleased with your collection so far?" a warm smile blossomed, he peered slightly into the bags and chuckled softly. "i think it's more that i didn't grow up with it as a big holiday, and now i'm just trying to get through the start of the new school year, so i don't even want to think about the end of october yet."

where: somewhere in richmond when: friday, august 29th who: cordelia & open (cap 3/4)
Richmond was quiet at certain times of day — today was not one of those times. The onslaught of children fresh out of their stuffy classrooms raced past her with little regard for her safety, shoving her bag full of administration papers all around. Cordelia could understand the tension they were facing, having been sequestered into rooms for eight hours a day, she was feeling it too.
However, she did not shove and run and yell — her train of thought is interrupted by a gaggle of maple brook children nearly running her off the sidewalk with their scooters. Her bag falls in someone's lawn and she refrains from stamping her foot. "Mind your elders!" She screamed after them, but their collection of laughter and 'oops' faces showed her no real sympathy. "Where are their parents?" She muttered, more to herself as she retrieved her wayward bag.
"They get you too?" Cordelia asked the person a few steps behind her, irritation melting into concern, just slightly. "They better be careful or else the neighborhood watch will be after them." She rambled, dusting herself off. "We're probably just the most recent victims." It was meant to be half a joke, but she wasn't sure it would land because, well, she was also still quite annoyed.
it was one of the reasons brendan never left school when the kids did. well, and the mountain of paperwork and never-ending to do list that characterised the new school year, but those excuses were substantially less reminiscent of a scene from the lion king and thus less interesting. the sentiment behind the stampede was still highly relatable -- so much so that he'd crossed out that unwritten rule and headed for a walk amongst the let-loose students. the familiar voice, and its exclamation have him halting in his tracks, dodging and apologising to kids to get to a nearby fence ( and cling on momentarily for dear life ) and free his route towards cordelia only a few steps ahead.
"jesus, don't say that! i'll not have ye adding fuel to the fire when they already think we're ancient," brendan laughed, silently surveying the other to check she'd survived the mass exodus unscathed. "no, no, i'm grand. managed to seek shelter against a white picket fence. i'll live to bore them to death another day just yet," though he liked to think that wasn't actually what he did. "think they should be more worried about you comin' after them, than the neighbourhood watch. that handbag could very easily become a lethal weapon," he beamed, adjusting askew tortoiseshell glasses. "should i ask how your day went, or is that a touchy subject now?"

"i am just saying!" freddie laughed as he looked over to the other, "maybe you need to put yourself out there a little more. date, have fun. you were married for what - ? how long?" he didn't bother waiting for a response, "bren, you're not anymore! you don't have spending your friday night with me. you should be having fun." maybe there was a part of him that was testing the waters. he wanted the other to say that he was having fun here, that he wanted to spend the evening with him. maybe he was thinking too far ahead, wanted too much. maybe he needed to slow himself down a little and just enjoy the company of another friend, rather than giving in to the crush that he was harbouring. "come on. let me get you another drink and we can figure out who your next victim will be, hm?"
he'd known where the conversation was heading from the get-go. it was where many of his chats with freddie ended up, dating. a truly horrifying prospect brought up by perhaps the warmest man brendan had ever known. it made it very difficult to brush freddie and his frankly crazy ideas off. he opened his mouth to the answer question -- stupidly, as it had clearly been rhetorical -- and settled instead for a drawn-out groan. arms crossing atop the bar, he let his head drop into the space created. "i'm well aware i'm not married anymore, thank you very much," retorted, though not half as dryly as he'd intended. dark brows furrowed then and he sat back up. "who says this isn't fun? i'm havin' fun. right here," leaning sideways, he nudged freddie's shoulder with his own. "with you, even if you're trying to peer pressure me into shite i don't want to do. now, if you're not having fun with me, mate... just let me know." brendan shook his head, tune soon changing as he realised his drink was empty. "i'm only agreeing to the first part of that proposal."

DECLAN O'HARA - 1x05
Location: Anywhere
For: Anyone
"So, when is it acceptable to start putting up Halloween decorations? I mean, stores are already beginning to stock their shelves with decorations so it must mean it's not completely socially unacceptable." Quinn more so mused the latter to himself. Clearly, by the bag that held some horror decorations and a few plastic pumpkins - he definitely thought it was okay. At least to buy some. To say spooky season was his favorite kind of season would be an understatement. Quinn most definitely was a horror and Halloween nerd. Even not just when the time rolled around for it. If there was a horror movie printed shirt, it was safe to say he was getting it. Honestly, his closet was full of shirts in that genre.
brendan dragged a hand down his face, staring at the display before them stocked to the brim with pumpkin, ghost and similarly seasonally-themed goods. "ah jesus, please don't talk about halloween right now -- we're not even out of august yet," the palpable despair in his plea was only partly exaggerated. to wish for the next holiday felt like wishing his life away, and there was far too much to do in the present that the holidays didn't even bear thinking about. gaze trailed to the selection carried by the other and he chuckled softly. "if it was up to my daughter we'd have the halloween decorations up by the fifth of july, so i suppose you should be commended for waiting this long. youse really do make a big thing of it here."
( cis man, aidan turner, he/him ) look who goes there! It’s brendan doherty. wait, you don’t know who he is? the 45 year old head of history at maple brook school has been in town for, like, one year. i believe they live in richmond, but i usually see them around central library. they can be a bit obstinate, but i think being unflappable kinda balances them out, you know?
