No I don’t think you heard me

GRACE REMEMBERED. THE REASON HE WAS ON PHM IN THE FIRST PLACE. AFTER HE WILLINGLY ASKED TO SEE ROCKY’S SHIP. AND WAS WELCOMED INTO THE COOLEST THING HE’D EVER SEEN ATP. They put that memory and Rocky’s ship next to each other to contrast. They contrasted one of the worst moments of his life with (arguably, at least at that point, pre-Erid) the coolest. They put together the scene where Grace had No Reason and Every Reason.

DID ANYBODY SAY BLOODYMARY X TNTDUO???? NO ONE???? THATS OK!!!!

- Grace has been a perfectly comfortable aroace his whole life and has never had sex. If Simon has had sex, it was probably not healthy. Therefore neither of them have any idea what the hell they're doing.

- Does Mary have porn in the database? I'm gonna say its tasteful softcore stuff and Grace just never bothered to look before.

(Side note do you think they have Heated Rivalry? I'm gonna say yes.)

- Awkward awkward awkward. But kinda fun and interesting?

- Simon gets really aggressive during and feels self conscious about it for hours while Grace is like "whew that was a workout welp time to review my lesson plans!"

- Rocky totally walks in on them because he doesn't know what the humans are doing on the bed. They end up making a "humans are being intimate do not disturb" sign in Eridian.

- Simon was never a cuddly guy before but once he's on Erid with Grace he eventually becomes the most massive cuddlebug ever.

- Grace saying vague things about human anatomy to his students so he doesn't have to explain that he's limping because Simon fucked him over his desk last night.

- Grace gets Rocky to make him some little vibrating bullets and okay one of them is being used on his toothbrush like he said but the other is for when Simon is horny and Grace isn't in the mood. Grace hanging out at his desk doing "work" while Simon is on the bed being edged over and over again until he's an incoherent mess.

He tosses a little earth ball and calls it lava, refers to astrophage breeding as whoomp, there it is, plays around in the hardware store and buys a ton of skittles, You’re not gonna believe this… Nothing happened! He’s not hung up on being serious at all. Shit, he’s not even doing the scientific method systematically and skips ahead. He operates on vibes. His maturity is shown through his work and results, not his methods.

That’s why when reality hits he acts very hesitant. Suddenly the situation escalates and his reaction is I’m not doing that. In fact, Ryland Grace was already dodging the important shit in the first few scenes. The students were asking if the sun’s gonna die and it took a lot of reroutes before he finally caved in.

The rest of the Project Hail Mary felt like grownups. He thinks they’re putting themselves out there more than him, making big choices. He might’ve felt like he’s being treated as a resource, a coworker, not a friend. Like he doesn’t belong in the project, that it’s too serious. So he’s fine being in the sidelines. In his comfort zone. Now remove him from the comfort zone.

The reality is not enjoyable so he has to cope with that. He hates moments of dread. He hates darkness. So he acts like sunshine and rainbows as much as he can. Like a child.

I’m not saying Ryland Grace doesn’t know the gravity of the situation he’s in, he just doesn’t want to feel it.

•Ryland doesn't share a lot about his personal life with his students, but he is alway delighted to talk bout his husband to the point where everyone knows if they want to get Mr. Grace off topic and waste time they just need to bring up the other Mr. Grace

•Simon is a commercial deep sea/oil rig diver who does a lot of government sponsored jobs

•Simon and Ryland's wedding was fairly small, mostly just friends bc neither has much family left to speak of, and Rocky and Eva fought over which of them gets to be Ryland's best man (Rocky won. Eva got to officiate as a consolation prize)

•Ryland has a cat named Felicette :)

•Ryland met Eva though a job Simon was working. They both adamantly refuse that they are friends. They also send each other their wordle stats every morning and are *incredibly* competitive about it. Simon is hopelessly endeared by the whole thing

•Simon cut contact with his family/foster family the moment he turned eighteen and has not spoken to them since

•technically Simon has a clean criminal history, but he does have a sealed juvie record

•Simon eventually quits his diving work because he ends up in an accident that almost killed him while working an oil rig job. Ryland got the call in the middle of the school day, and he left the classroom without explanation to get to the hospital

•Ryland's students aren't told right away what happened, only that Mr. Grace will be taking some time off, and when they do eventually get the story the all make 'get well soon' cards for Simon

•after the accident, Simon gets a service dog named Laika

•Simon and Ryland never have kids of their own, but they are the *best* uncles ever to Rocky and Adrian's kids
