i do think one thing the movie flattens over that i really wish was included was how fckin smart rocky is. in the movie he's adorable (his puppeteer did such a good job!) and obviously has the benefit of being able to make xenonite anything, but in the book grace is constantly like 'oh my god, he's the best engineer in the world, he can make literally anything work' and ALSO rocky is able to remember and translate grace's words without a computer, and repeatedly is like 'YES i'm using human units talking to you, we will ALWAYS use earth units, because if i have to wait for your dumb dumb idiot brain to translate eridian units our stars will literally age and die before you finish. idiot.' like in the book they are portrayed more as equals and i think the movie maybe skipped out a little on this

eva stratt the character you are. yes, the way she took away grace's autonomy made me sick to my stomach, but holy fuck is she so well written. they put a woman who cared in front of the trolley lever while her friend was tied to the tracks, and she looked him dead in the eyes and made the choice that would ultimately save humanity.

I love the headcanons that are like ‘the eridians already figured out how to replicate earth’s atmosphere, temperature, food, light, the ocean for the human. ofc they found a way to extend grace’s life expectancy’ bc talk about my exact brand of cope. but I also think another motivating factor could have been no one wanting to deal w 400 years of rocky in a bad mood
