This is the masterpost of my worldbuilding series. I originally created this document in 2022 for personal use, and have since decided to make it publicly available for others who may find it useful. :P

The material is extensive and intentionally thorough. Rather than attempting to absorb everything at once, I highly recommend approaching it selectively; focus on the sections most relevant to your current project and build outward from there. I'm not big on fantasy/magic as a genre for my work, but every once in a while, I'll get an idea that seems interesting that I know I'll never do anything with. If anyone likes this idea, it's yours for the taking. If you do decide to do anything with it lmk because that would be kinda cool, lol.

Long before kingdoms learned to shape stone or chart the wilderness, the sun died.

Not at once. First, it dimmed. Seasons collapsed. Crops failed beneath a gray sky. Then came the Long Dusk, when daylight lasted only a few hours each year. Without warning, the once white heavens had faded to black entirely

What remained was the Divilam'Dei, the Final Flame.

Some believe it was left behind by the gods. Others claim it's the corpse-fire of the sun itself, still burning as it fell to the earth in a final cry of desperation from the fallen god. Whatever the truth, every source of warmth, light, and magic now descends from it.

Without the Flame, the world would freeze. Cities would come to vanish. The roads, once safe to grow and prosper life would become overrun with danger.

And so humanity learned would learn to carry fire like a sacred inheritance.

The First Embers

Not everyone is capable to wield the Divilam'Dei. The average man can warm himself beside it, but only a rare few can bond with its living sparks.

These chosen children are given an Ember while still young, usually between seven and ten years old. The ritual is dangerous. Many fail. Some reject the Ember entirely and are left hollow-eyed for the rest of their lives.

Those who survive become Emberlings.

The Ember itself is housed inside a lantern or oil lamp crafted specifically for its bearer. No two are identical. Some are built into staffs of black iron, others hang from elaborate shoulder frames, traveling harnesses, or chains worn across the chest. Noble houses decorate theirs with silver and stained crystal. Wanderers often carry battered brass cages wrapped in cloth and soot.

But the flame itself cannot feed on oil.

The Divilam'Dei burns emotion, obsession, discipline, and purpose. Passion is its fuel. The fire of one's internal character is what shapes it, for better or for worse.

An Emberling who loses their drive will watch their flame weaken. One who abandons their craft entirely risks becoming Ashfallen, a living shell whose lamp burns cold forever.

Because of this, young wielders are encouraged to dedicate themselves completely to something. Music. Swordsmanship. Astronomy. Medicine. Cartography. Architecture. Hunting. The flame grows strongest when tied to mastery.

The magic that manifests reflects the soul feeding it.

Colors of the Flame

As an Ember matures, its fire changes color. This is not merely aesthetic. Flame-color shapes both magical ability and cultural identity.

Entire civilizations are defined by the hue of the fire they cultivate.

Common known flames include:

Amber Flames Warmth, endurance, craftsmanship, metallurgy, protection. Cities of amber light are known for fortresses and massive foundries.

Blue Flames Memory, tides, dreams, navigation, cold-fire manipulation. Coastal societies and archivists prize blue embers.

White Flames Rare and feared. Associated with purification, revelation, death rites, and truth-binding.

Green Flames Growth, fungus, adaptation, beast-taming, and bio-luminescent agriculture beneath the dark.

Violet Flames Thought, illusion, mathematics, and distance. Violet wielders are often scholars or spies.

Red Flames Warfire. Rage, momentum, physical enhancement, destruction. Many kingdoms outlaw unchecked red-flame training.

Black Flames Not true darkness, but absence. These flames consume other light. Their wielders are considered omens and are often executed at birth.

No one knows whether the flame changes to match the wielder, or whether the flame chooses what the wielder will become.

Many speculate that when the final flames fell from the heavens, the flames burned a hot white. Meanwhile, some other theorists claim it fell black.

Growth of the Flame

As Emberlings mature, so does their bond with the Divilam'Dei.

A practiced wielder becomes Embersome, one whose lantern no longer requires physical carrying. The lamp drifts beside them like a loyal spirit, hovering weightlessly through instinct alone.

At this stage, the wieler can shape flame into techniques unique to themselves:

forging solid constructs from light

burning memories into objects

carrying whispers through lampfire across cities

igniting warmth inside frozen blood

warding roads against creatures of the dark

preserving bodies from decay

summoning spectral moths made of cinders

creating false stars in the sky for navigation

sealing beasts inside lantern glass

storing years of knowledge within flames

The strongest users eventually stop casting magic consciously at all. Their lantern begins reacting to emotion and instinct before thought. It becomes an extension of themselves.

These masters are called Divine Bearers, though very few survive long enough to become one.

Death and the Returning Flame

The flame never dies with its bearer.

When a wielder passes, their Ember collapses inward, burning brilliantly for only a few moments before extinguishing. But the fire itself returns to the Divilam'Dei.

Nothing learned is ever truly lost.

Every spell mastered, every hardship endured, every lesson carved into the soul feeds back into the First Flame. This is why ancient Embers are considered priceless. Older flames are wiser, heavier, and harder to control. Some rare ones are kept apart from the Divine flame itself, hoping to find a young emberling capable of being wielded directly from the masters.

Some lamps are said to contain fragments of heroes who have been dead for thousands of years. Some lanterns are passed down for this reason.

The Fallen Sun

The world beyond the lamp-lit cities is nearly pitch black.

After the sun vanished, nature changed violently. Forests became pale tangles of fungus and blind bark. Oceans grew silent and cold. Animals adapted or died.

Many creatures evolved toward the light.

Entire ecosystems now revolve around flame migration and lamp routes. Some predators can sense embers from miles away. Others mimic lantern glow to lure travelers into the dark.

The Great Burning of v1472 changed civilization entirely. One of the largest flame-reservoirs in history erupted, reducing an entire wooden capital to ash in a single night. Since then, most cities are built from dark stone, slate, kiln-brick, and metal.

Open flames are tightly controlled.

A city’s central beacon is considered more valuable than its throne.

The Lamplighters

Trade still exists between the scattered cities of flame, but only because of the Lamplighters.

No one knows how old the order truly is.

They travel the Crossroads, ancient trade routes lined with towering iron lamp posts that stretch through the darkness for thousands of miles. Every few leagues stands another beacon, each lit by sacred fire maintained by the order.

The Lamplighters rarely speak. Their faces are hidden behind soot-black veils and mirrored masks. Some believe they no longer age. Others claim their bodies burned away long ago and only the flame remains inside their cloaks. Some believe they were blessed with the first sight of the fallen flame. Transformed by its light directly as though God himself gave them one last gift before fading to black.

What everyone agrees on is this:

Where the crossroads stay lit, humanity survives.

Where a lamp goes dark, something eventually comes out of the night.

Travelers leave offerings beside roadside lanterns: oil, written prayers, food, teeth from slain beasts, children's drawings, scraps of poetry. By morning, the offerings are always gone.

No one has ever seen a Lamplighter sleep.

The Mothborn and Other Night Creatures

The light attracts more than travelers.

Some beings worship flame. Others hunger for it.

The most infamous are the Mothborn, descendants of people who adapted too closely to the Divilam'Dei generations ago. Pale-winged and dust-skinned, they are drawn instinctively toward powerful lanterns. Some are harmless scavengers. Others descend in swarms large enough to extinguish entire villages.

There are darker things as well:

Hollow beasts with glowing stomachs full of stolen embers

Blind giants that navigate by heat alone

Ash-drinkers that feed on exhausted magic users

Mimic lanterns hanging in empty places where roads should not exist

Vast creatures sleeping beneath frozen oceans, visible only when lightning-flames reveal their silhouettes

The Politics of Flame

Because every city depends on light, flame itself became currency, religion, and political power.

Some nations willingly share embers to keep nearby settlements alive. Others hoard ancient flames and force weaker cities into dependence.

Wars are fought not for land, but for:

beacon towers

ember mines

ancient flame vaults

dead Divine Bearers

forgotten crossroads

A city whose central flame dies rarely survives the winter.

And yet rumors persist of impossible places:

a hidden city burning with silver fire

a kingdom beneath the ice where flames freeze instead of burn

an ocean lighthouse whose beacon shines green into the sky

a second sun waiting somewhere beyond the dark

Whether those stories are hope or madness, no one can say.

Mr. Sulverweed & The Oil Honey

As writers & artists, it isn't uncommon for us to create a multitude of concepts and ideas. Some of them are just passing thoughts, meanwhile others begin to be fleshed out and expanded upon. We sit and we think and we concept and we design and build and eventually, we end up with a lot of scenes, character interactions, rough plot ideas, and the basic outline of a story.

We get these ideas that we fall in love with, spend time thinking about it more, jotting bits and pieces down here and there and think about our work often...only to never do anything with it.

You sit there, thinking about the same scenes over and over, maybe while listening to a certain song or while you're in a particular spot that makes you ponder your work more.

You want to work on it, but...there's a lot there with no clear goal in mind. Too many scenes to fully remember, you forget important details because you didn't write them down. You begin to make progress, but you remember one of these details and suddenly your progress is null because you overlooked something obvious.

Then it just...you close the program. Tell yourself you'll come back to it later. You have 10+ characters to write and intertwine, multiple environments to define, there's a lot of inner plot connecting scenes you still need to make, you're planning on multiple books with connecting plotlines, have a handful of side plots going at once and ...and you closed the program again.

Your project is ambitious. Your passion, but also your downfall. You know what you want, but you can't make it all fit together

...so you close it again.

You began working on this years ago now. You still have the document you made in 2016 and it's not even 20 pages. But you still go to it, open it, and the content inside isn't up to date because it's old and outdated. You need to erase the work you already made and remake it.

...So you close it again. You'll work on it when you are feeling better. It's demotivating.

You love your work, but you can't find it in you to make progress. You keep closing it. It's like an abusive relationship at this point. You love it dearly, you want to make changes, but the other just keeps pulling you down, even when it's not trying to. The sin its committing is existence. It's here because you brought it here, but you can't stand to look at it for more than a few minutes at a time. You avoid the hard truth, you make a new document with the same premise, get a few pages in, but you already know what you're going to do.

You don't even save it this time.

It leads me to wonder. How ambitious...is too ambitious?

How many completed projects do you have under your belt? From start to finish, to clicking "upload", how many do you possess? Is it truly writer's block, or is it something else holding you back from your "passion" project? Your answer is under five, isn't it? I can't blame you. I know the feeling. For a lot of us, the first piece we intend to make and put out is the hardest. You're going to get the most judgement, because it's your first. It's not as good as X person, so why bother? Or worse, what if it gets zero attraction? Let to rot on your page where no one comes to see it. Which is truly worse? The bigger your first project is, the harder it is to start because you're too focused on this. You want it to be perfect and because of this, you keep closing the damn program. You don't even have a draft yet. You won't even let yourself write it badly because you're scared of it leaking, or cringing at it, or some other excuse. You love this story you're making too much to see it at its worst, so you keep closing it.

Listen, that's normal. You aren't wrong for feeling this way, alright? There is no shame in this. You aren't bad or a shitty creator. You aren't lazy, you don't have a bad work ethic, you are struggling with something a lot of people overlook and ignore.

You are ambitious.

You work on this story, because you know you want to achieve something. You want to share something with the world that you've spent countless hours mulling over. You have a plethora of ideas. Your sin is not that of a synonym. You have come to care too much. What you suffer from now is your polar opposite.

This is where many people begin to feel they land when they continue to procrastinate and halt progress. Ambition turns to lethargy. A spinning mind loses its shine and the gears begin to rust. They grind, but it's become a grating sound that only comes when you look at that program. Music and podcasts don't tune it out anymore. Damn, I'm tired.

It's not that you don't care. It's that you were too ambitious. Trying to fit too many conflicting ideas and characters into one story became too much to deal with for your first work. Or even one of.

So with this bears the question;

How do I maintain my ambition while still making progress?

I believe the answer is simple, actually. It's one of the first things we are told when we begin our journey of creativity. Something we have all been told before, but the advice has become elementary to us. We focus on the harder and more complicated subjects to try and prove ourselves, but it led us to our folly.

Start Small.

You have a million ideas you are trying to piece together into a coherent narrative. You're so focused on the bigger picture that you forgot the elements that build up ones writing skills. It's not just research. It's not just following the structure. It's practice.

Instead of focusing on one major work, start small. Work on your passion project in the background and focus on smaller, easier to obtain goals.

In hopscotch, you jump into each block and move forward one step at a time. You can try to jump over the first block, which hey, you may succeed, but you don't have the same balance you do when you do it the right way. When you circle around, you think, "Hey, I didn't need the first step, so why do I need the second?" So you skip that one too, making it harder on yourself. Your third loop comes around and you've become ambitious. You take a running start this time, wanting to jump over as many as you can...but you slip this time. You fall and you hurt yourself.

Now you can't play with the other kids for a while. You're stuck on the bench. Your workbench.

The program is still there.

Today marks May 17th. The document remains untouched. The program flashes you, its white screen gently illuminates your features as you stare back at the opening screen you've some to know too well. It knows you won't open it today. But maybe...maybe that's a good thing this time.

Open another document. Name it something exciting. Or name it later. Start small, whatever that means to you. Give yourself a goal. Make it small. Give yourself a date you want to finish it. Or not. Start small. Give yourself a word count limit. Start small. Give yourself a limited number of chapters. Start small.

Then maybe...just maybe...the next time you open your program, your finished piece sitting there, ready to be shared with the world, your eyes will flicker to the work just below it. Your passion project. Your beloved, your stress, and your ambition. It will always be there waiting for you. A little time apart doesn't hurt too bad. And hey, maybe this time when you meet each other again, you'll remember to do something that you haven't let yourself do in a long, long time.

Become ambitious.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about worldbuilding, and this is something I’ve genuinely wanted to discuss with other creators and consumers for a while.

Whenever the topic of “great worldbuilding” comes up, the same names almost always dominate the conversation: J. R. R. Tolkien, H. P. Lovecraft, James Cameron, and a handful of others. And don’t get me wrong, they absolutely deserve the recognition. Their influence on fiction, creature design, lore, language, atmosphere, and speculative storytelling is undeniable.

But I’m more interested in the lesser-known creators. The people whose worlds quietly left a massive impression on you creatively.

Who are some worldbuilders, artists, writers, filmmakers, comic creators, game developers, or even obscure internet creators that genuinely inspired the way you think about creating worlds? Big projects, tiny indie works, niche webcomics, forgotten games, experimental sci-fi, strange alien ecosystems, fictional cultures, whatever comes to mind.
