Grief is a form of praise // In praise of jaimie breezy branch Brackish was a tiny sliver of jaimie’s work and life, yet Brackish was totally transformed by her involvement. That says so much about jaimie’s expansive energy, her passion for community, her artistry. jaimie was passionate. She was contagiously free. Her first performance at Brackish, she played an introspective solo set from the corner by the window at @stlydias. The second time, she covered the walls with her artwork and filled the room with energy that reverberated long after the show. Then she joined the curatorial team. jaimie connected Brackish with her beloved communities of Red Hook (@portsideny, @360recordshop), Chicago (@esschicago), and countless musicians and artists. jaimie always pushed to pay artists more. jaimie was big schemes and dreams, and she was willing to sweat for them. For Brackish’s first video fest, she spent sleepless nights down to the wire getting video edited and making personalized intro videos for artists. At our last meeting, about the future of the series, she was full of ideas for taking Brackish further, for connecting more people through the series. Among our last texts, she is asking me for email addresses so she can get to work. jaimie was a true friend who is achingly missed. She really saw people. She knew me. She observed, “you are stressed,” when I didn’t realize it myself. She reminded me why I am doing this. She was one of the first to wish my newborn baby, “happy birthday.” jaimie was a huge part of Brackish and I am so grateful. We take her example of community building, risk taking, hard work and exuberant spirit forward as we figure out what’s next for Brackish. Flock up and fly, jb.
