I watched My Octopus Teacher on Netflix, pretty good documentary. There's a bit where the guy says the octopus drills little holes into shells to get into them, and later I find a shell while walking on the beach, and it has this little hole. Maybe an octopus? 🤔

Had so much passion fruit that I decided to bake them into some tasty cupcakes. I kinda made up the recipe and they turned out well. Don't be afraid of using mayonnaise in cakes, such a good trick.

75g oats
50g plain flour
500ml buttermilk
2tsp baking soda
1 egg

I just recently visited this waterfall and it's probably my favourite place in Te Puke
This little river next to where I live is maybe my favourite place around here, even more so than the beach. I can read on the bank, cycle along the path to the shops, watch the grumpy old dudes sailing their model boats. Good stuff
Another hike in the Kaimai forest, this time to The Rereatukahia hut. There was a better view on this hike, once you get to the top of the range you're treated to an awesome view of the landscape. The hut was really cool too, small and cosy, I'll definitely return here in the winter and get the fire going. There were 2 other people at the hut, we sat outside and made a campfire and watched the stars and saw the starlink satellites. It was really refreshing to just spend some genuine time with other people, it was a real human feeling.
I hiked out in the morning and I was starving, got a pork pie and a massive ice cream 👍

These birds are called pukeko. Common in NZ, I have already fond memories from my winter in Marahau, waking up and seeing them all out on the grass, foraging around. Like other NZ birds, they don't seem to like flying much, although they can. They look cool but have a loud annoying shriek.
Made an awesome carbonara type thing. I never really get when people make a big fuss about whether something is AUTHENTIC. I'm just making tasty food with whatever I've got.
This is my favourite time to be at the beach, when the sky is turning these amazing pastel colours that blend together perfectly, and the sea is turning a deep dark blue.

One of the things that I love about this place is that there's fruit everywhere in the summer. I haven't bought fruit in weeks. I'll bring passion fruit into work, and someone else will bring in something else and we'll swap. And if I do want to buy fruit, there's always a stall on the side of the road.
For a few weeks, a certain fruit or veg is super cheap and I'll be eating tons of plums and sweetcorn. It's a good way to learn what fruits and vegetables are in season and you end up making a connection with foods and certain times of the year.
