“Please don’t talk about what I made where I can’t see it! I don’t like it!” I’m seeing this a lot more often when I poke into fandom spaces and it’s fucking ridiculous.

That’s called a regular, normal conversation. People just have conversations with other people. You don’t need to see every single thing people are discussing about something you made. In fact it’s actually worse for you if you do. Who started this? Stop it. For your own sake.

I’ve seen so many situations where actual, traditionally published authors have tanked their reputations because they couldn’t stop shoving their nose in everywhere. They couldn’t handle having anyone discussing what they wrote in places without them knowing about it. It ruins mental health, it ruins lives, it shouldn’t be something you engage in even on a smaller level, just with people talking about, say, a fanfic you wrote.

“But it’s on the internet and I’m not a big, published author, so—” That just means you’re more vulnerable to being exposed to an opinion you don’t like. Unless it’s directly on something of yours, like a comment or a reblog or whatever directly connected to your name, you shouldn’t be looking for those opinions at all! Let people have their conversations in peace! Don’t be the person that barges in on conversations just to tell everyone to stop having opinions.
