Note: This distillation process creates a product called hydrosol. Hydrosol can be made with any plants, fresh or dried. Some other useful magical hydrosols can be made from rosemary, bay leaf, chamomile, lavender, thyme, or sage, to name just a few! Follow essential oil safety as a guide for hydrosol use!
Plant of the Day Tuesday 6 June 2017
Covered in flower-heads composed of four ovate cream bracts this Cornus kousa var. chinensis (Chinese dogwood) was the star of the garden! This large, deciduous shrub or small tree, also has leaves that turn red and orange in autumn and deep pink, strawberry-like fruit. The bark looked great as well.

Reblog this post to enter. Likes count, too. No giveaway or spam blogs. If you reblog on a side blog, let me know in the tags what the name of your blog is that you’re following me with.
Please don’t spam people with reblogs- you can reblog however many times you’d like, but please be courteous.

Collected at Kennywood Park
This Trillium erectum specimen was collected at Kennywood in May 1903. Found in forest understories in our region, Trillium erectum has several common names—red trillium (one form has deep maroon flower), wake robin (it is a sign of spring), and stinking benjamin/wet dog trillium (its flower smells of wet dog).
Botanists at Carnegie Museum of Natural History share pieces of the herbarium’s historical hidden collection on the dates they were discovered or collected. Check back for more!

Wild Strawberry - A Tasty Medicinal Plant
Ever since ancient times, all parts of wild straw berry have been used as herbal medicine. The leaves and roots have been used in herbal teas to improve bile and liver function, to treat inflammation of the bowel, and the berries have be used as a diuretic and an herbal remedy for gout.
The berries have also been used cosmetically in skin care creams to restore and strengthen the skin, reduce wrinkles, bleach freckles and relieve sunburns.
The leaves of wild strawberries are mildly astringent (contracting), diuretic and are considered to have blood-purifying properties.

Northern Dock - A Medicinal Weed
Northern dock is closely related to yellow dock (Rumex crispus), and has similar medicinal properties.
In the past the herb has been used traditionally both as a food source and medicinally but in today’s herbal medicine it does not play a big role.
In folk medicine it was especially the root that was used, and then primarily for wound treatment.

Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale)
Called Greenovia Dodrentalis, these succulents have curved layered petals that make the plants look just like roses. Mostly they’re found in the Canary Islands but we would say they belong somewhere in a fairy tale because of how unique and magical they look! Keep on scrolling to check out some pictures of this stunning rose-shaped succulent. (Source)
