I would drive from Fort Worth to Amarillo to visit my parents. When I topped the caprock somewhere south of Memphis Texas I would pull off the road and just get into my pickup bed and marvel at the view of stars and the Milky Way that I could not see in the city. But there were no lights in any direction other than the occasional vehicle lights going by. It became my favorite spot on my trip because of no ambient light to ruin my view. I would stay there for 20 to 30 minutes and then get back to my drive to see my parents. It was a beautiful break from driving that was spectacular. It’s now been over 40 years since I have taken that trip but I always loved the rest stop and the view.

I went to visit my brother and he took me to a outdoor seafood place that started as a food trailer. We ordered 3 lbs of crawfish for each of us and they were fantastic. So we then ordered 3 lbs of shrimp. What we got were large fresh Texas Pink shrimp perfectly seasoned and cooked. It was the best shrimp I have ever eaten. It was amazing. The owner came over to check on us and called my brother by his name and turns out he was one of the first regular customer that he had when he first opened his trailer. That was about 6 months ago and now it’s crawfish season again so I guess I’ll go visit him again so we can go eat mud bugs again.

We have 3 hummingbird feeders, one on the front porch and two on the back patio. We haven’t seen any before we put them out and just based the timing on previous years. They migrate from Mexico to the north with the scouts flying first around the first of March followed by the others by the end of March. Each year we seem to have more than the previous year. We have the green throated and red throated variety every day and we have to refill the three feeder bottles every third to fourth day now. I love sitting out back drinking my coffee and watching all of them flutter around and chase each other around the feeder. It’s the simple things like that which makes us happy.

So my wife decided that she wanted chickens for our rural home. We had three white leghorns and a raccoon got two of them. So we decided to get 3 Barred Rock chickens to go with the 1 white leghorn that we have left and the three Rhode Island Reds for a total of 7 chickens now. I of the Rhode Island Reds is a rooster and definitely keeps the girls safe and happy. He is the first one out and the last one in at sunset. My wife has named them with country singer names. Hank is the rooster, the three Barred Rock are the Dixie Chicks. The Rhode Island Reds are Dolly, Loretta, and Reba. Two of the Dixie Chicks always seem to stay together and the other one is almost always off by itself so I think that one is Natalie Maines whose opinions killed their popularity. Either way it’s fun watching them free range in the back yard.

I love this post because it’s so manly. Two gentlemen from two generations just enjoying each others company and no words needed. All guys get it, women certainly can’t participate in this fashion, they just can’t get the simple silence and have to interject a bit of talking. They simply don’t understand the silence and just being together is enough.

Rest in Peace Dusty but know when you gave your blessing for Elrod to follow you please know that he is doing just fine. Since Elrod has tuned your guitars for many many years I think he has honored your wishes and ZZ haven’t missed a single beat since you have left us with such a wonderful legacy.

Jelly Time! The ripe cactus tunas make a great jelly but you have to strain the seeds before you boil them to make jelly. It’s terrific and my great grandmother and grandmother both made jelly from them.

I vote to replace Pride Month with Veterans Month. Besides every celebration only gets one day a year so explain why this supposed celebration gets a month? I’m waiting!
