Ok so lowk I never rlly completely took a side in the Gwynriel-Elriel debate until recently, even though I was leaning towards Elriel at first, and then Gwynriel. So I just wanted to confirm my opinion today, and I read the bonus chapter of ACOSF.
After pondering it for a little, I gotta say, although there is a lot more explicit attraction between Azriel and Elain, I do think that SJM is setting us up for Gwynriel in the next book. The first thing I noticed was that the Elriel section of the bonus chapter was purely lustful, and involved a lot of negative emotions like anger (on Az’s part). Even Nessian had the “this can be nothing more than sex” idea going on which led to romantic feelings. Additionally, in the bonus chapter, there’s this one specific part where Az thinks, “Such terrible things that it was a sacrilege for his fingers to touch her skin, tainting her with his presence. But he could have this. This one moment, and maybe a taste, and that would be it.” Plainly, this sounds really toxic (edit: and to me it reminds me of behavioral patterns that occur in addiction). Meanwhile the Gwynriel part had a more lighthearted emotional atmosphere. I felt like the Gwynriel scene could have potential for something romantic rather than purely sexual. Especially the part when Az gives the necklace initially meant for Elain to Clotho to give to Gwyn — I thought that was symbolic of Azriel initially giving his heart to Elain and in the end, definitively, to Gwyn.
Also, I interpreted SJM’s decision to have the Gwynriel scene come after the Elriel one as a literal suggestion that “Elriel comes first, then Gwynriel.” I think that if SJM wanted Elriel to be endgame, she wouldn’t have left off with a Gwynriel interaction.
The human brain is naturally drawn to the “less obvious” choice in a situation; in this case, Gwynriel. It’s a proven psychological concept called intermittent reinforcement and it essentially refers to the human brain’s love of the unpredictable over the repetitive or expected. Many romantasy authors actually use this strategy, maybe even unknowingly. For example, in Shatter Me, Juliette feels attracted to Adam (who is initially the more obvious choice) before she falls for Warner, who is the endgame. In the Hunger Games, it’s Gale before Peeta. In KOTLC, it’s Fitz before Keefe; in The Cruel Prince, it’s Locke before Cardan. Even in ACOTAR #1, It’s Tamlin before Rhys. I observed this pattern with Elain and Gwyn; both the chronological layout of the bonus chapter and also the fact that Elain seems like the obvious choice right now, considering she’s the third Archeron sister and she and Az are currently sexually attracted to each other, points to Gwyn being endgame since there is still so much more to discover about her character.
My second reason is that we can make predictions based on who Azriel has been emotionally, not just sexually, attracted to before: Mor. I’m sure this is already a common argument in the fandom, but Mor’s personality is much more similar to Gwyn’s than it is to Elain’s. While Elain is perceived as more soft spoken, Mor and Gwyn are portrayed as (not better but) bolder, more warrior-like and outgoing. It would logically make more sense for Az to develop an personality-based (aka a not-just-superficially-lustful) attraction to Gwyn rather than Elain.
Edit: Another major point that I want to make. This is inspired by someone who commented on my post and offered an insightful counterargument. While Elain and Azriel have the plot potential of the whole Court drama and Blood Duel that some could argue would make them a better focus for the next book, Gwyn and Azriel also have a major, plot-based connection with a lot of potential: the lightsinger theory. In ACOSF, there's a quote: "Nesta couldn’t explain the way she sensed that there was something else mixed into her. Some secret beneath the pretty face.” This is foreshadowing that there's more to Gwyn than meets the eye. There's also this one: "Gwyn sang, chin high, a faint glow seeming to radiate from her" and "There are lightsingers: lovely, ethereal beings who will lure you, appearing as friendly faces when you are lost." The repeated usage of the idea of Gwyn's singing (also in the bonus chapter), as well as the glow she possesses when singing suggests that she is a lightsinger. If she is indeed a one, which is extremely plausible, then she most definitely has abundant plot potential with Azriel since... well, shadow-singer, light-singer. I think this might even be a stronger plot stake for them than the political drama plot stake for Azriel and Elain, since the lightsinger theory and its connection to Azriel ties into the very lore and framework of the ACOTAR world.
Lastly, I want to dismantle the whole misogyny thing against Elucien. For one, Lucien is not forcing Elain into the mating bond — we need to separate his character from the automated magical phenomenon of the mating bond. It is not a choice made by him to coerce Elain into being with him. Two, he actually breaks the standard of the “dominant, possessive male faerie” compared to Rhys and Cassian. He’s portrayed as less “Look at me I’m so snarly and I got my mate pregnant” and more “I’m willing to give you lots of space.” It’s a double standard that honestly sucks.
Anyways, that was really long, but if you need any Gwynriel arguments, these are here ig. To be clear, I am not hating on Elriel or Elriels. If SJM decides to go through with the ship, then so be it. It’s a fantasy book yall. Either way, I rlly rlly rlly hope we as a fandom can learn to be Actually Mature Individuals (if ykyk) and not send death threats and not get all our friends to spam report appropriate posts that we just don’t agree with (or whatever happened in that one argument). So be respectful, open-minded and peace out ✌️

❤︎ Rosabelle definitely watches James when he sleeps…. for a little bit before she falls asleep (my little creep i love her). Also, James is genuinely clingy when he’s sleeping.
❤︎ James is the passenger princess in this relationship. Rosabelle tends to do most of the driving between the two of them.
❤︎ Rosabelle and James would try to learn new things together. One of the most notable things they attempted was learning a new language! This becomes increasingly relevant since they’re also big on traveling—wherever they go, they try to learn at least some basic phrases. Rosabelle picks up on it far faster than James does; grammar honestly isn’t his strongest skill.
❤︎ Rosabelle would surprisingly be into photography, constantly taking pictures of James (alongside Clara and whatever nice moments they all share together).
❤︎ They both have a major sweet tooth.
❤︎ Once James finally learns how to cook, he does all of their meal preparation. He literally cooks based entirely on whatever Rosabelle likes.
❤︎ They adopt a cat, and aside from Clara, that cat is their child, no question.
❤︎ James loves doing Rosabelle’s hair—putting it in braids or even just playing with it. Sometimes he does it subconsciously because he genuinely can’t help it; it’s simply fun for him.
❤︎ Rosabelle’s favorite pastime is listening in on Adam, Juliette, and Kenji sharing embarrassing childhood stories about James growing up.
❤︎ One time when they were heading to a meeting and it was snowing, James had upset Rosabelle enough that she retaliated by throwing a snowball at the back of his head. James threw one back, and before long, they were in a full snowball fight. One of the soldiers sent out to retrieve them when they both weren’t answering their pages got caught in the crossfire. It made for a very awkward explanation when Warner asked why they were late.
