âBut eyes are blind. One must look with the heart.â - Antoine de Saint-ExupĂ©ry
Weird French #04
Ătre fleur bleue
Literally âto be blue flower.â
Means âto be romantic and sentimental,â maybe even overly so, and also a little naive. Could be translated as being mushy, but has a gentler connotation. When talking about a person, refers to their personality.
âElle rĂȘve au grand amour, elle est un peu fleur bleue.â (She dreams of finding the one, sheâs a little too sentimental.)
The reality about spoken french
We donât use the negation ne. We say Je sais pas (I donât know) or On a pas Ă le faire (we donât have to do it),
Speaking of which, we prefer using on rather than the pompous nous : On est arrivĂ©-es (weâve arrived), On y va? (shall we go)
Speaking of which, our questions are often affirmative sentences ending with a question mark (i.e. : a high-pitched tone) : Tu viens? (are you coming), Tâen veux un-e? (do you want one).
Speaking of which, we chew words. When followed by words starting with a consonant, personal pronouns can lose their final letter : Jâte lâdis! rather than Je te le dis (Iâm telling you).
Speaking of which, weâre lazy : Je can be Che (chais pas), Il can be Y (râgarde, yâa un chat!) and grunt : many euh (uh), ah, bah (hum), ben (well), hein (tf?) and rhooo/rhaaa (ffs). We often start sentences with but : Mais tu saoules! (youâre annoying) to express displeasure.
Speaking of which, on top of dropping nĂ©gations, we drop pronouns : Youâre being a pain in my ass should be Tu me fais chier but can be Tu fais chier - maybe to make it universal or dramatic.
Speaking of which, we thrive on sarcasm and irony. To someone whoâs babbling, weâll answer It makes my leg look good.
Speaking of which, we repeat (personal) pronouns at the beginning or end of sentences. Weâre likely to ask Quâest-ce quâil en dit, lui? and answer Moi, je veux bien (tonic pronouns, careful!).
Speaking of which, we like to use the conditional mode to indicate a wish or hypothesis : lots of Si jâavais su, jâaurais dit oui (had i known, iâd have said yes), Jâaimerais bien pouvoir- (I wish I could-), etc.
Speaking of which, we add useless words : Bien (jâirais bien), Petit (un petit peu), TrĂšs (trĂšs vrai), Trop (je ne sais pas trop), ça (Câest quoi, ça?)âŠ
Speaking of which, letâs stop before you all get disgusted and unfollow me. Remember this is spoken, private french and doesnât apply to formal situations!
Are there any other languages important to you in your life?
There are! I've been studying German for 7 years and Indonesian for 2 years. I've also done classes in Italian, Portuguese and Spanish at university but I've never pursued them with the same commitment I dedicate to my French, German and Indonesian studies (they are my majors at university).
Hey, I just had a quick grammar question that I've tried googling but found no answer to. In French would I be able to say "demain, en mangeant je parlerai" or something using the "en (verb)ant" (sorry I don't know what it's called" and future simple in the same sentence. I provided a crappy example because I couldn't think of anything good but I hope you understood what I meant and can answer. Thanks!!
The en -ant form (le gérondif) in French is not used in the same way it is in English and it's far less common so it's best to avoid it when you feel like using the equivalent of an -ing structure if you've just started learning the language. For your question in particular, use: "demain, pendant que je mange, je parlerai avec...". I think this is a much more natural structure :) (whilst eating/while I'm eating, I'll talk to...)

letâs start with youtubers !
I discovered some great and interesting french youtubers lately, so I thought it might help people who are learning french n_n.Â
doc seven : itâs basicaly a lot of facts in rythmed and interesting videos ( like, â les 7 personnes les plus recherchĂ©es au monde â or â 7 metiers quasiement disparu â ) linguisticae : this guy explains linguistics like nobody else, so french idioms, vocabulary and also he explains where some languages come from. taupe10 same things as Doc Seven, but with the number 10 ( when doc seven does top 7, taupe10 does.. well, top 10 ). pilote this channel is all about tv show, about this beautiful universe that is the serie universe. So yeh, he does different kinds of videos but they all are about tv shows. romain teatime so this guy does biographies like nobody else. You can find lot and lot of biography well-explained, but also the stories behind fashion stuff ( like the heels, the skirts⊠). And the âcuriositeaâ serie which is kind of a lot of random stories with a lot of facts about something really interesting. les cours de japonais this professor in university gives free and great japanese classes. So yep, if you want to study french and japanese ( although that might be quite difficult but ey, itâs a great youtube channel so ). thomas gautier heâs a youtuber from Quebec ( so not the same accent and idioms as the metropolitan france but itâs still french right ) and heâs really, really funny. histoire brĂšvesbasicaly itâs some history chapters, conflicts and so on explained shortly and well dirty biology to be honest I just found this one and havenât watched any of his videos yet, but it seems to be interesting and great. So itâs basicaly a bunch of youtube videos about biology ( but in a fun way, like â game of thrones vs science, flying dragons ? â ) les topovaures, yay, the first lady in this list ! So, she does some top ( like doc seven or taupe10, but itâs not a top 7 or a top 10 but : a top 5 ).and they are about a looooot of different things, like really, it can go to star wars to mythology. les lectures de nine letâs keep going with girls ! So Nine has a channel where she talks about books, basicaly. margaud liseuse sooo a girl who reads, (well a second one). Because we never have enough books to read okay. links the sun So this guy does a âpoint cultureâ serie wich is mainly about discovering a subject ( like the pirates for instance ) and the ânon mais t'as vu ce que t'Ă©coutesâ in which he does some criticism about popular music ( those in the top in france ) nota benean other youtuber talking about History ! Itâs so damn interesting, and he talks about the middle age, mythology stuffs, vikings stuff and so on. la vidĂ©othĂšque d'alexandrieokay so itâs a facebook page kind of like a headquarters for a lot of youtubers ( but not the entertaining kind of youtubers, the teaching in a fun way, educative kind ). So yeh, basicaly a lot of great youtubers ( in it you can find some of those I introduced you before but there are others that I havenât checked yet so yep ). le rire jaune thatâs not an educative / study related channel like the others, but an entertaining/funny one. So, basicaly itâs two brothers living in paris and doing podcasts/vlogs. and while iâm at it, this is a list of some great french singers/bands ( I wonât introduce them like saying a lot of things about each of them, Iâm sorry, but itâs basicaly good music and Iâm not daily listening to each of them so ) ; L.E.J Itâs 3 girls who started by doing covers, one of their video ( summer 2015 ) went viral and now they are actualy doing their album ( a covers album first ) aaand finaly an original song came out ! ( here ). Luke Luke is a french rock band, and theyâre just awesome. So I really love this one here but they are all awesome. TĂ©lĂ©phone Telephone is an old french band whish is now disbanded but itâs not a reason not to keep listening to them right ? ( some ideas of songs to start : here, here and here ) Florent pagny So yes, heâs pretty old now, heâs not the average 25 pop singer; but his voice is amazing, and heâs quite funny actualy ( he was a coach in the voice france ~ ). AND, thereâs this one song that when I listen to, I cry. Like, for real. ( the cry me a river song ) CalogeroCalogero is a singer quite concerned about what happens in the world and around him. His voice is amazing as well. He has a guitar. Two recent songs he made : un jour au mauvais endroit, this song is about something that happened in Echirolles ( near Grenoble (somewhere in france)(not near paris)) : a young boy killed by others just because he looked at them. // le portrait this one is about a kid who draws the portrait of his mother because sheâs dead and its the only way he can remember her. AND yes, I almost forgot but I canât not talk about this song : J'ai le droit aussi this one is about homosexuality. itâs about tolerance. Itâs about a guy who loves an other guy and wants to have the rights to be with him too, just like other couples. Cats on trees its a duet, and they did one song i truly really love but they sang it in english ( here ). Louane Sheâs a young girl who won The Voice (france) and then was casted as the main character in the film : La famille Belier ( which is a good movie btw, you sould definitely go check it out ). So I donât like that much what she does, but itâs still pretty good, and she has a pretty voice, itâs just not my type of music at all. BUT i love her version of âJe voleâ which is in the OST of La Famille Belier. Emmanuel Moire is a french singer who did some musicals ( like Le Roi Soleil), and I like this song of him ( which is very poetic so maybe hard to understand but still, pretty ). Julien DorĂ© He won La Nouvelle Star, and he has a unique voice, like really. So, here ( but itâs quite poetic too ) Coeur de pirate sheâs a singer from quebec, and she has a beautiful voice ( like all the others I know ). She took part in the âLa bande Ă Renaudâ ( okay sorry, grammaticaly it should be La bande de renaud but itâs how they wrote it ). Itâs an album with covers of Renaudâs songs as a tribute. Hereâs the one she did. Zazie I was a huge fan of her when I was a kid, and I still like her songs. They have an actual meaning which is great. One of her most famous song ( and I know (proudly) all the lyrics yay) is this one but my favorite is this one Some other great songs and great bands without description because itâs starting to be a really long list. I only put one song of each singer/band but they did some other great songs ~ Ă ma place/ // manathan kaboul // Liberta // Le vent nous portera // J'ai demandĂ© Ă la lune // DĂ©solĂ© pour hier soir // La lettre // J'temmĂšne au vent //La tribu de dana // DerniĂšre danse // Les lacs du connemara // Tout le bonheur du monde // Tous les cris les SOS ( by Daniel balavoine ) // L'aigle noir // Les mots bleus + thierry amielâs version // Je voulais te dire que je t'attend // L'assasymphonie // ĂȘtre Ă la hauteur // je veux le monde // un ange frappe Ă ma porte // Also, I wanted to introduce you the youtube chanel : ONDAR ( on ne demande qu'Ă en rire ). Because : itâs amazing. Okay so ONDAR is firstly a tv program in which people who wants to become humorists come and do a sketch. And they post all their sketchs on youtube, so hey, letâs laugh a little would you ? Here are some of my favourites ; l'avocat de la salade, la fritte et la saucisse, changer son or en argent liquide ( and a lot more ) So yep, thatâs it, feel free to add some (:

What good is anything if you canât read? Correction. What use is your new foreign language if you canât read in it? What good are you if you canât read a road sign, a book, a menu, that blog post insulting your nation? If your second language is written in your first languageâs alphabet, thatâs a lot easier to deal with. If not, well, first learn it. Thatâs a⊠good hint.
Some of the best reading material is, believe it or not, books. Books can be aimed at certain language levels. Itâs probably best to leave the newspapers etc. until youâre more confident.
Childrens books are the best starting point - A good one for French is âThe Little Princeâ. The more you read, the better! (Does that go without saying at this point? The more you do = the better the results)
Bilingual books are also a solution for getting the jist of sentences. However, certain things can get lost in translation, so donât rely on them!
Watch a show with audio in your language, and the subtitles in another. Pay attention and read the subtitles! It should teach you to read at speed and understand at speed, eventually.Â
Donât ever speed read. Youâll loose the ability to really take in what youâre reading, which is fine when youâre fluent in a language and can just skim over and understand, but in a foreign language you can mistake one word for another, and not understand at all. Take your time, itâs okay if youâre reading more slowly than you would in English.
A digital dictionary holds more words than a paper one. Also, theyâre a lot easier to search, so consider finding an online, reputable dictionary or buying one.
