Ponce 1937 #art by @vgbnd March 21st 1937 #LaMassacreDePonce #ThePonceMassacre On #PalmSunday of 1937 a protest March was organized by The Nationalist Party a pro-independence group in Puerto Rico #protesting the arrest of their leader #DonPedroAlbizuCampos on charges of #seditiousconspiracy and they were met by police who brutally shot into the crowd injuring 200 and killing 21 - 17 men, a woman and a child; the two policemen who were killed died from friendly fire. None of the protesters were armed and almost all the protesters who were shot were shot in the back by machine gun fire. March 1st 1954 Four #PuertoRican #Nationalists attack the US Congress on March 1st of 1954 to draw attention to the struggle for #independence of Puerto Rico from US #colonialism... They were Andres Figueroa Cordero, Raphael Cancel Miranda, and Irving Flores are led by a woman Lolita Lebron... The got into the House of Congress unfurled a Puerto Rican flag and started shooting at Congressmen... 5 congressmen were hurt... Andres, Rafa,and Irving were captured and senteced to 75 years in prison and Lolita was sentenced to 50 years in prison... #PresidentCarter commuted their sentences in 1979 - after they had served 25 years... Lolita Lebron was the longest held woman #PoliticalPrisoner in the world... BEAUCHAMP BEFORE DEATH by @vgbnd Puerto Rico has been a colony of the US since 1898 and has always fought for its independence… The following is a part of that history… October 20th, 1935 the founder and leader of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party Don Pedro Albizu Campos gave a radio address in which he criticizes a program to “Americanize” the University Of Puerto Rico that is being instituted by US colonial interests. A group of students in support of the measure wanted Albizu declared “Student Enemy Number One”. On October 24th Albizu is declared “persona non-grata” at a university demonstration. Students in support of Albizu respond in protest. The police are called in to quell the protest and kill four Nationalists. That day becomes forever etched into the history of Puerto Rico as the Rio Piedras Massacre. Eye witness evidence of the massacre is ignored and the police involved in the killing are promoted. In retaliation for the Rio Piedras Massacre two Puerto Rican Nationalists, Hiram Rosado and Elias Beauchamp assassinate Colonel Francis Riggs who is the commanding officer of the police on the island on February 23rd, 1936. Hiram Rosado and Elias Beauchamp are captured by police. The photograph is visual remix of Elias Beauchamp.
