I haven't seen Project Hail Mary yet, although i intend to. I'm curious how this bloody mary ship came about! And what about it do you like? I think it's really cool when characters from two completely different franchises become a popular ship.

I'M SO EXCITED TO ANSWER THAT!!

It’s kind of hard to tell without spoilers for both Project Hail Mary and Iron Lung, so disclaimer, there will be ones. (But I will try to keep it vague when it comes to details, so you still have fun watching phm!)

So how it came to be, I’m not really sure but the second I saw this ship I was enchanted. What captivated me most was how similar yet completely different Grace and Simon experiences were, and how their fate was forced upon them.

Both of them were expected to find answer that could save their people from dying, sent without their consent for what truly was a suicide mission, treated like a sacrifice for greater good. It didn’t matter if they deserved it, if they even wanted to go which both of them didn’t!! They wanted to live, even though their life didn’t seem to matter to people around them. Cause was most important.

It’s two completely different movies with completely different tone, but they parallels one another so well!!

And when we put Grace and Simon together there’s so much different ideas we can explore! So much challenges to overcome, trauma to work on, learning how to be with another person for both Grace and Simon after being in isolation from other humans, health challenges (not to spoiler I keep it at that but there’s so much here!!). Putting them together can make such an complex and compelling story.

But honestly this ship means so much to me because Simon gets a happy ending in it. He can live, be safe and be loved, no matter if it’s romantic or queer platonic. He fought so much and did all he could with circumstances he got and it still wasn’t enough. It was the most heartbreaking to me. When it comes to Grace his ending is good, it can be bittersweet when you think about it to hard, but overall is full of joy! (I would say more but I will leave this without big spoilers). So placing Simon in Grace world is extending this joy for Grace and for Simon it’s like everything. Whole new life that he weren’t meant to ever get.

And with the way this characters are, they can bring best in eachother!! Rough and guarded Simon could drop his defenses and let himself be soft and gentle, and rest in environment that doesn’t make him fight for survival every single day and Grace could have someone that accepts him fully with all his quirks and big emotions, be patient with him and make him stop overthinking everything and just let himself be.

Just the idea of two people stuck somewhere in space and learning how to care for one another and finally let their guard down after so much fighting and feel safe with each other is everything to me. It’s playground for hurt/comfort! My favorite motive in fandom depiction of them is that they both touch starved, but are too respectful of one another to act on it until it break them! Angst is soo good!! And there’s so much more things I could say about them if I went into details!!
