South Korean Films: What to watch next?
Now that you’ve been introduced to Korean films, do you want to try a few more? Here are some suggestions with links to IMDb (movie database site) where you can read film synopsis and watch trailers to help you decide what to watch.
But first, WHERE can you watch South Korean films?
Netflix has a good selection of South Korean Films and dramas. Just type “Korean Movies” under “search”.
You can also try your local library and search under Korean films. Some libraries offer services such as Hoopla and Kanopy that make it possible to stream films for free.
Sites like Asian Crush also has a variety of films that can be streamed for free on their website or app.
Another option to try is hancinema.net. Their film archives list dates back to South Korean Films from the 1950′s!
Now, without any specific order, here is a tiny sampling of some of my favorite contemporary South Korean films:
Old Boy by Park Chan-Wook
“Miss Granny” (2014) Directed by: Hwang Dong-hyuk
“A Taxi Driver” (2017) Directed by Jang Hoon
“Man from Nowhere” (2010) Directed by: Lee Jeong-Beom
I Saw the Devil (2011) Directed by Kim Jee-Woon
“Peppermint Candy” (2000) Directed by Lee Chang-dong
My Sassy Girl (2001) Director: Kwak Jae-Yong
And there are so many, many more to watch! Here is a link to IMDb’s list of 100 Most Popular Korean Films https://www.imdb.com/list/ls042966798/?ref_=tt_rels_1
South Korea’s Film History
In honor of our film, here are some videos and links to learn more about South Korea and its history.
If you wish to learn more about South Korea and it’s traditions, a great place to start is the Korean Cultural Center’s website. If you live in Los Angeles, you can visit and enjoy exhibits, movie screenings, and more.

Korean history is interesting and complex, these videos simplify it a bit, but they are a good place to start learning.
Here are a few videos to get you started if you only have a few minutes to learn:
This one gives a succinct explanation of the Division of Korea.
If you want to go deeper into Korea’s history, economics, and politics, but still want to keep it under 15 minutes.
Longer, but if you want a deeper and broader history lesson, here David Kang, gives a lecture on Korea to educators
Want to go deeper still? Here is a podcast: South Korea and the Miracle on the Han: History, Policy, and Economics

What is a microcinema?
microcinema(Noun)
A specialist cinema showing films that are unlikely to be screened at more populist venues.
From Moviemaker.com
“Microcinema is an emerging term and industry, hence it has become a movement all its own. The term designates a small venue or cinema, moving or temporary, which shows alternative short or feature-length films that would normally fall "under the cultural radar" of the mainstream movie theaters and/or art house cinemas...
Though the term "microcinema" is new for many, it is interesting to note that the first public film screening was in a microcinema! The very first commercial exhibition of a projected motion picture was the Lumiere Brothers' screening of approximately 10 short films, lasting only 20 minutes in total, at the Salon Indien, the basement lounge of the Grand Cafe on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris, December 28, 1895. Less than 100 years later, in 1993, Rebecca Barten and David Sherman coined the term and started their own "microcinema" in the basement of their San Francisco apartment. They called it Total Mobile Home MicroCinema. Since then, the microcinema movement has been gaining momentum around the world, and it is poised to make a real and tangible contribution to the development of the entertainment industry”.
From Wired:
“ The term microcinema was coined in 1991 by San Francisco's Total Mobile Home Microcinema, where all the films are "underground" because they're shown in the basement. The founders say they envisioned an alternative movement, a sort of cinematic microbrewery...”
