He died the week before, on the evening of the 13th. June 1886, in an unclear way in Starnberger Lake (at that time still Würmsee) near Berg. A pathological examination of the dead king was found on the 15. June 1886 held at the Munich residence. Next to the pathologist Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Rüdinger and his assistants were also present representatives of the State Ministry of the Royal House and the Foreign Affairs. The sectional protocol was only partially released to the public and did not contain a clear determination of the cause of death. According to the protocol, there were no injuries to the surface of the body, neck or face, and gunshot, blow or stab wounds could not be detected. The public short version appeared with the cause of death "drowning". However, there is a disagreement in the protocol: the king had no water in his lungs.
From the 16th. up to the 18th June 1886, the corpse was publicly buried in the court chapel of the Munich Residenz.
The ceremonial burial took place on the 19th. June 1886 in the Gruft of the Wittelsbacher in the Michaelskirche. The mourning procession went from the Hofkapelle to Brienner Straße and Königsplatz as well as Arcis- and Sophienstraße. At the Old Botanical Garden, the conductor bowed over the statue into Neuhauser Straße. Thousands of people lined the streets. The hearse took a larger detour to allow as many people as possible to participate. Subsequently, the blessed coffin was lowered into the main tomb of the Wittelsbach, in Ludwig II. has been buried until today.
