I think some people have a tendency to hear "there's a lot of social pressure on adults not to be single" and think it means something like "if you're single some people might think you're weird or assume there's something wrong with you, but as long as you don't prioritise other people's opinions of you that shouldn't pose a substantial problem". So when people talk about the difficulties they face being single they'll respond like "who cares what other people think! Just be single anyway! :)" and it's very well-intentioned but also frustratingly misses the point

Because the reality is that "social pressure" in this case means that our society is structured in a way that makes it more financially and practically difficult to navigate life while being single in very real and substantial ways. The problems posed by this can't be solved by single people just deciding not to care what other people think, solving them would involve working towards restructuring society in a way that actually accommodates us.

And of course, the point here isn't that everyone should go and pair up pronto to make things easier for themselves, or that anyone should stay in a relationship that isn't working or making them happy. But these are real, material problems we're talking about, and dismissing real material problems with "who cares?" is not actually a helpful or actionable response.

#yep yep yep #I don't know how I'd afford anything if I was single #there's also very definitely a thing among certain very very straight people #where the mentality is 'you just get married'#you find anyone and couple up #which is why there are so many miserable people (mostly women) in marriages #it's worse around here. like....my husband's aunt and uncle were asking me about my siblings #who they saw at our wedding #and were overjoyed to hear that my sister got married #they asked about my brother and I said he's doing well and is an accountant in pittsburgh #and they were like 'married???? kids???' and I said no #and it was like he clearly failed as a person #they were like 'he's gotta be in his late 20s by now?' and I said he's 31 and it was like. dismay #they said 'oh well if he's not married by now he's probably not going to' which is ridiculous on so many levels #and it's not that he's not interested but he's not going to just pick someone you know?#and why is that his life's purpose?#they didn't care that he's doing well and has a good job and hobbies #if you don't have a spouse and kids you're doing it wrong #anyway. I don't have an answer but I agree #we went from the idea that a family should be able to be supported on one (male) income #to now a single person can barely afford to be single and are expected to pair up with a partner or roommate #everything is more expensive and wages haven't gone up enough #and billionaires become trillionaires

I do wonder what the plot of the first Psych movie was supposed to be if Tim hadn't had a stroke and they had to rewrite it. I'd heard it was supposed to be fairly Lassiter-heavy, but I imagine they kept the bones of the plot and re-worked it with other characters, so when watching I'm trying to imagine which parts would've been different. Maybe a manifesto against Lassie instead of Jules? But I think with the big baddie being Allison Cowley (still makes me lol) it makes more sense for it to be Juliet. And Lily would've probably been too young to be kidnapped instead of Iris. I'm just forever curious what it would've been.

#air fryer #now here's where I have a nuance question #because the thing I have is an 'air fryer oven' which is basically a fancy toaster oven #and I use the bake feature more than the air fry feature #so do I still get to use that just the air fry setting goes away?#because I'd be fine #I had a traditional air fryer and I never used it and gave it to my aunt #I mean I'd be fine without the little oven too I could just use the big oven but the little one is faster and more convenient

Every day I am haunted by the fact that Jupiter Ascending was not based off of a million word space opera fantasy book series and that I cannot go to the library and take out like six door-stopper sized volumes of sheer unhinged gendervibes-y space werewolf bee queen batshittery where every new freudian space eugenicist villain talks like he's trying to eat the scenery's pussy out harder than the last guy. 😔
