fics masterlist - if anyone's curious about what i write
Hi. 😌
I suck at introductions, but let's give it a shot anyway.
I'm Michelle or Mich, formally known as BlueClanMarkings, and I write Mass Effect and Dragon Age fanfiction. I love angst, smut, angst, romance, drama, did I mention angst, and staying away from canon events. I love AUs too.
Below is an overview of some of my fics. I have two pseuds on AO3. Click here for Mass Effect, and click here for Dragon Age. 🫶🏻
current wips:
Fifty Sovereigns - Female Trevelyan & Varric Tethras
The first story in the saga of Beatrice "Bee" Trevelyan. Takes place in 9:31 Dragon in Kirkwall. It's a loss of innocence/coming of age story.
9:31 Dragon
Bann Edmund Trevelyan sent his daughter to Kirkwall hoping she'd learn caution.
Beatrice Trevelyan had other ideas.
The Shape of a Lie - Female Shepard/Garrus Vakarian
An angsty and long Western AU set in a fake 1890s USA. Expect horses, gunfights, hunting, death, and graphic descriptions of violence.
Hired to infiltrate an outlaw gang, bounty hunter Garrus Vakarian soon discovers that some jobs are more complicated than they seem.
Ten thousand dollars is a hard offer to refuse.
And loyalty is a dangerous thing to gamble with.
series:
By Starlight and Sapphire - Mainly Shakarian, but it's on hiatus.
Follows the story of Marika Shepard from 2174 and all the way to post-war. Currently in ME2 timeline. It respects canon events to a degree before taking a hard left turn toward AU-territory. Marika is "my" Shepard: infiltrator, Earthborn, War Hero, true neutral, pragmatic, and oddly romantic. A proper best friend dynamic with Garrus that grows into romance.
The Shakarian Works - Female Shepard/Garrus Vakarian
Features just one-shots of these two lovable idiots. More often than not, it's just smut.
The Turian Daddy Works - Female Shepard/Other Turians
Lorik Qui'in, Castis Vakarian, Adrien Victus - the other very fuckable turians in our galaxy. More to be added.
The Pinky Swear - Female Shepard/Garrus Vakarian
Shepard and Garrus meet up a few years after the war to follow up on a pinky swear they made right before Ilos: if both are single by the age of thirty-five, they'd marry each other. This is fluff. I rarely do pure fluff but when I do I go fucking hard.
Breaking Regulations: The Vega Files - Female Shepard/James Vega
Literally just a series for all my Shega stories. Currently just one here.
Hard in Hightown, Harder in Skyhold - Female Trevelyan/Cullen Rutherford
All the short stories that will span Bee's life from 9:31 Dragon and beyond.
a few chosen samples:
An Eye for an Eye - Female Shepard/Castis Vakarian
(aka the most fun I've ever had writing fanfic)
Jane Shepard gets the surprise of a lifetime when she catches Garrus cheating on her with Tali. While having her boyfriend and her best friend do that to her is painful, she soon finds comfort in someone unexpected.
And that comfort quickly turns into something else.
A Guide to Awkward Courtship - Female Shepard/Garrus Vakarian
(aka let's pretend to date to get my dad off my back)
Some turian parents like to have a hand in who their kids end up with. None of them can compete with Castis Vakarian's overbearing nature. Garrus has had enough of his father's constant nagging, but nothing has helped stop him.
Then, Shepard offers a solution that he finds himself wanting her help with.
how to flirt with your commander - Female Shepard/Garrus Vakarian
(aka CSS and HTML gave me a headache, but flowed once I got it right)
Garrus Vakarian never expected his human commander to start winking at him. Unsure if she’s flirting, mocking, or plotting an assassination, he does the only logical thing: logs onto Read-It, the galaxy’s favorite extranet forum, to ask strangers for advice.
This is a romcom told entirely through forum posts, edits, and comment chaos.
rule number one: why we don't eyeball it - Female Shepard/Garrus Vakarian
(aka Garrus is fucking smart and I'll be damned if you forget it)
“Can it wait for a bit? I’m right in the middle of some calibrations.”
—Garrus Vakarian.
Shepard knows code. Crack security systems? Easy. Rewire field tech mid-firefight? Child’s play. Get into places she’s absolutely not supposed to be? Please. Walk into the forward batteries and try to understand equations, trajectory models, and Newton’s Laws of what the hell Is that?
No chance.
So when she asks her sexy turian sniper vigilante boyfriend to teach her what ‘calibrating’ actually means, she expects a lecture drier than the surface of Tuchanka. What follows is… technically educational.
Mostly hands-on.
And definitely passionate.

Summary:
Hired to infiltrate an outlaw gang, bounty hunter Garrus Vakarian soon discovers that some jobs are more complicated than they seem.
Ten thousand dollars is a hard offer to refuse.
And loyalty is a dangerous thing to gamble with.
Pain. Throbbing, relentless pain.
Garrus squeezed his eyes shut, trying and failing to keep it at bay. Sunlight still shone through his eyelids, stabbing like a spear against his brain. He boiled under his duster, his face wet and dry at the same time. Something itched. He tried to move, but couldn’t.
Rope bit into his wrists when he flexed his fingers behind his back. A wooden pole—or was that a tree?—stood rigid against him, thick enough his weight couldn’t sway it. He was kneeling. Had he been kneeling like this all night?
“Good morning, sunshine.”
Garrus squinted at the man in front of him. He was considerably less dressed since last time—brown trousers, cream linen shirt open far enough Garrus could spot a strong chest and some hair, and suspenders keeping everything in place.
The Mexican. The big one.
“Sleep well?” he asked.
“Suppose so.” The words came out dry and Garrus winced. “Son of a bitch…”
“How’s your head?”
“Feels like someone hit me with a rifle.”
“That’s because someone hit you with a rifle.”
Garrus glared at the Mexican. An amused chuckle met him in return.
I didn't forget @mimitz0-o 😌 Thanks for tagging me. ❤️
I haven't written anything new, but I'm editing and that means I'm rewriting things constantly.
“You’re Danny?” he asked.
“Dani.”
She said it like she spoke to the camp’s idiot, every syllable enunciated slowly. The difference was subtle but clear—easy to misunderstand for anyone born and raised speaking English. A softer ah in the first syllable, a lighter i at the end. Dani. Not Danny.
“Dani,” Garrus said.
Her lips curved faintly. “Good boy.”
A strange flicker of heat stirred where it had no business stirring.
He blamed the concussion.
@frankiesoup @chalkituptofate @dotflacfile @capnmarvl @garfbin @ale-tie @mimitz0-o (heh) @westernlarch @themaniacisinthemailbox @volchonika feel free to ignore or not! I just feel like a bitch if I don't tag anyone. 😁
It's been a while since I touched Marika (not like THAT), but from the top of my head...
Marika's very in control of herself and careful of how she acts in public. Comes with the territory of her past jobs. So while she doesn't do weird shit often, that doesn't mean her mouth tends to cooperate.
What comes to mind is that she keeps saying cringy shit and immediately regretting it like "no that's not what I meant". My favorite example of this is from Anchor and the time she meets Garrus' family:
“No place to call home even there?” [Castis asks.]
“Especially not there,” [Shepard says.]
He opens his mouth, but Valeria growls faintly, shutting him up.
“Well, you’re here now,” she says. “And not glowing nearly as much as when you walked in, I might add.”
“Guess your shielding tech’s working overtime. Either that, or your son’s just very calming.”
“Is that a skill of his?” Castis wonders. “Calming people?”
“Yeah, he’s way better at it than he thinks.” Shepard eyes drift to Garrus, her smile softening. “He has this way of grounding people. Making you feel like everything’s gonna be okay, even when it’s clearly not. He’s… kinda become home for me.”
Garrus blinks. Twice. His mandibles twitch, then still completely. He then turns his head and looks at her like his brain’s buffering. When she replays what she said, her eyes widen as she realizes she’s done it again.
In front of his family, no less.
“Wow,” Solana says dryly. “Are all Spectres this poetic?”
“I think most are better at it than me.” Shepard’s voice comes tight. “I promise that sounded so much better in my head.”
Her mouth opens, ready to apologize? Backtrack? Recite her final words before she digs herself six feet under? She sets her mug down on the coffee table and stares at it like it holds the secrets of the universe.
“Where’s your bathroom?”
“First door on the right, dear,” Valeria says warmly.
Shepard forces herself to walk at a normal pace. The moment the door shuts behind her, she lets out the breath she’s been rationing since they landed. The mirror above the sink throws her reflection back at her, and it’s way too red. She braces her hands on the counter, head bowed.
“You’re fine,” she tells herself. “You’re a professional, not a lovesick intern. Stop Freudian-slipping your heart out and focus. This isn’t the time for any big talks.”
The mirror doesn’t argue.
She turns the sink on and splashes her face with cool water. Dries her hands and face, and resets her posture, locking eyes with herself in the mirror once more.
“Deep breath. Survive the conversation, eat the food, and try not to propose to Garrus while you’re there.”

@capnmarvl and @frankiesoup also wanted me to yap about Bee and I'm only happy to talk about my girl. ❤️
1: off the top of your head: notes for characterization? what are the most essential traits of this character to you (personality traits, important connections/dynamics, voice)?
I'm still on Fifty Sovereigns, so Bee is still very 19. She's the youngest Trevelyan and since the Trevelyans are an affluent house in Ostwick with close ties to the Chantry, I'm sure Bee has had a rather sheltered upbringing. Her father didn't hand her off to the Chantry because he had other plans (political marriage).
I made Bee a very 19-year-old girl who wants to experience the world and prove she belongs somewhere other than at a man's side. She's naive, full of wonder, and has enough of her teenage boldness left in her to travel the continent alone. We see this a lot in Fifty Sovereigns. She
- gives a beggar a Sovereign and doesn't understand why every person in the Docks gives her A Look™️ afterward.
- loses track of where she's going because ✨architecture✨.
- gets too offended when the cunty templar implies she shouldn't be wandering around alone.
- counts her money in full view of everyone right in the middle of the street.
- hears "Deep Roads expedition" and thinks "oh, how fun!"
Already this says a lot, right? But then she's also interested in people, wants to know them, she does have some advantages from being a Trevelyan, like listening to her father talk circles around others in court. She does have some skills that allow her to impress and weasel her way into this Deep Roads expedition.
As for connections, her friendship with Varric and eventual romance with Cullen are the two most important connections in her story.
2: adjacently—do you think fandom does the above traits justice? why or why not?
I'll be honest. I haven't read a ton of Dragon Age fics. I'm currently reading @chalkituptofate and @frankiesoup's amazing stories, and buzzing in @capnmarvl's ear a mosquito to post more Cullavellan, so I have no basis to compare.
From other fics I've read, most seem centered around canon timelines or beyond where Trevelyan, other!Inquisitor is older and experienced.
So I guess no? But then I've also got a very weird premise, so I get it.
3: throw this character at any other character of your choice to bounce off each other as outsider pov to each other— regardless of timeline or logistics (crossovers allowed if you're interesting about it). why this combination? what insights would they have on each other?
I feel like it's natural to compare her to Varric. They're both adventurous people, but in different ways. Besides, their love lives are pretty similar when you think about it.
I don't think Varric necessarily seeks out danger, but he still ends up right in the middle of it, somehow. He writes books. He's seen some shit and will see even more. He has a complicated relationship with Bianca. Bee doesn't seek out danger either, but she wants to experience the real world and prove she can be more than someone's wife. She will have a complicated relationship with Cullen in due time.
I think Varric sees a young, sheltered noble who he immediately feels responsible for once she loudly announces she has enough money to buy herself into a Deep Roads expedition in The Hanged Man. He doesn't actually want her to join, but he also doesn't wanna be the bad man, so he wants Hawke to tell her no. Since he doesn't... Well. Now she's Varric's problem.
Bee sees a dwarf being snarky to Hawke and immediately thinks "friend?". They talk for hours, laugh, and by the end of the night, he's definitely a friend. She manages to talk her way into a meeting with Hawke and then proves herself worthy. In addition to that, she's realized people really care about money. Fifty Sovereigns (hey, that's the title of the fic!) means more rations, more medicine, more anything they might need.
As an outsider, it's easy to point out one of the biggest difference between them: their age. Varric is canonically 30 in 9:31 Dragon. Eleven years Bee's senior, he's definitely experienced more of life. We don't know how old Trevelyan is canonically, but I put her at 19 in Fifty Sovereigns. You have one person learning to adult and another knowing more about how adulting works.
Bee also doesn't know who Varric is or what reputation he has when she meets him. She sees a snarky man, a sexy crossbow, and confidence she thinks is all natural when it might just be a little cultivated to survive. Varric is good at shouldering people's baggage and she doesn't know that. One thinks adventure is something you choose, and the other thinks adventure is something that chooses you before you can back off and pray for mercy.
4: how do you think you would react to this character in real life and vice versa? would you prefer be a million miles out of range, be amicable classmates, or fall desperately in love? (bonus: arrange a hypothetical date between yourself and this character. getting silly with it is encouraged (fakedate them! escape a dinner date through a bathroom window!))
"Oh, honey. I love you and I'll happily talk for hours, but I give it two days before you get shanked in an alley and robbed. ❤️"
I think I feel like I'd have to keep her safe from the world. Older sister kind of thing. But I'd like her. She's not dumb. She just hasn't experienced much beyond Ostwick.
5: ideal flavor of rotating for this character? crack them open and dissect them— do you want them tormented, pining, or being loved + comforted? do you have any specific scenarios you like to think about?
I want her innocence and naivety smashed. I want her yelled at. I want her doubting herself. I want her hurt because of her own actions.
...I promise I'm okay. 😂 It's all in the name of ✨character growth✨.
6: weave a web of dynamics through the cast for this character: which dynamics are you most interested in? both canonically and through extrapolation/speculation— which dynamics are the richest to you, and why?
I'm most interested in
- Cullen and Bee (duh 🤪)
- Varric and Bee
- Dorian and Bee
- Cole and everyone
7: do you have particular niche takes on this character? defend those takes. (openly controversial takes are permitted, but also: hyper-specific headcanons which you believe in and no one else has considered enough to disagree with yet. pick a hill to die on.)
Nah, not really. Bee's just... Bee. A young woman finding herself and growing up a bit too fast. There's nothing niche about that.
I will say, I think she holds a grudge really well. She's just picky about what that grudge is.
Vitorius my sweet, sweet boy. ❤️❤️❤️ Of course, my dear. Let's get into it and shower you in some Vito juice. 😌
1: off the top of your head: notes for characterization? what are the most essential traits of this character to you (personality traits, important connections/dynamics, voice)?
When I made him, I was aiming for an all around good guy and a model turian (in terms of the Hierarchy). Selfless, loyal, hardworking, competitive... and then I added a lot of good traits to make him really approachable and sweet.
He's a guy who could've been one of those "promoted by nepotism" cases, but his father has enough brain cells to beat into his mind that the opposite was true from the start--he'd have to work ten times harder to prove himself because of who his father is.
He's often the voice of reason. The... fuck, what's the word? Mediator? I'm sure it's mediator. And he'll answer Marika's endless questions about turian culture and turn the questions around on her regarding human culture.
2: adjacently—do you think fandom does the above traits justice? why or why not?
Hmmm... yes and no.
I was really disappointed you had Tali act like an encyclopedia for the quarians in ME1 and then Garrus just... "you obviously know everything about turians, so why should I tell you". It wasn't until ME3 and the whole Menae/Tarquin thing you actually learned something interesting about turians. Well, fighting and fucking to blow off steam did happen in ME2, but that wasn't what I wanted. 😅
As for good guys, there are some of them in canon, sure. But Vitorius is really uncomplicated in a way that's rare, I feel. Garrus might be the closest I can get, but even he has his own shit to deal with.
3: throw this character at any other character of your choice to bounce off each other as outsider pov to each other— regardless of timeline or logistics (crossovers allowed if you're interesting about it). why this combination? what insights would they have on each other?
Fuck it, let's do Chakwas. They're both doctors and highly decorated soldiers. Makes sense to me.
Obviously, there's an age gap here and I'm sure Chakwas has more professional experience than Vitorius. What's interesting about them is that both of them care about Marika. Differently, of course. Both have that professional "we need to keep her alive" concern, but then you see concern beyond that.
In canon, Chakwas cares about Shepard beyond what I'd call professional concern. They get drunk together, talk shit, and hell, the doctor even adds some admiring comments here and there that I think make it clear. In and of itself, that isn't problematic. But I get some vibes HR would narrow their eyes at a little. Calling it motherly is a huge stretch, though Marika does call her Doctor Mom for fun.
In my canon, Vitorius is head over heels in love with Marika. That already crosses a couple boundaries and I'm sure HR would run at FTL speed to hold a seminar about fraternization rules and why they exist.
What they can both hide behind, I guess, is that Shepard is the most important person on the ship whether she likes it or not. She's a Spectre, she's an N7, she has the visions of the beacon in her head, she's physically fucked up after Cerberus--it's only natural it's in their interest to keep her alive.
Honestly, Mordin might be the most level doctor out of all of them. I see him as an empathetic guy, sure, but not at all biased.
"OMG TURIANS ARE REAL???"
No, but seriously, I'd love to have him as my doctor. He'd be so patient, dry, kind. I'd be the Doctor Michel to his Garrus which is funny because my name is... never mind.
I'd 100% see the doctor more regularly if he was my doctor. Not because I'd be in love or anything, but I'd 100% have a crush.
No bonus. I'm already beat from bad sleep and have other things to write. x)
5: ideal flavor of rotating for this character? crack them open and dissect them— do you want them tormented, pining, or being loved + comforted? do you have any specific scenarios you like to think about?
...historically, I guess I love crushing his dreams well before they could happen. x)
My ideal setup is in Into the Abyss because it combines a few things that makes me foam at the mouth like a rabid dog:
- Characters lying to themselves.
- Doomed love.
- Angst.
- Turning the tables and making an offer at the end that will test Vitorius' values and the hypocratic oath he made really, really fucking hard.
6: weave a web of dynamics through the cast for this character: which dynamics are you most interested in? both canonically and through extrapolation/speculation— which dynamics are the richest to you, and why?
Saren and Vitorius in Into the Abyss. I won't say why because *plot*.
7: do you have particular niche takes on this character? defend those takes. (openly controversial takes are permitted, but also: hyper-specific headcanons which you believe in and no one else has considered enough to disagree with yet. pick a hill to die on.
That week he had alone with Garrus... 😏
In another world, I think it turned into this pining story where Garrus didn't want to settle down and Vitorius yearned for him so fucking hard it hurt.
Which is why he kept saying yes to hooking up.
Why distancing himself never really worked for him.
And why Garrus being a bit of a heartbreaker hurt him more than he thought it would.
(send an ask with a character name + a fruit emoji and i'll go through these questions with the character in question! alternatively: send specific numbers + a character name)
off the top of your head: notes for characterization? what are the most essential traits of this character to you (personality traits, important connections/dynamics, voice)?

Absolutely. Everything plays like a damn movie in my head. Had I been better and faster at drawing, I'd probably post way more art than what I already do which is... once in a blue moon. 😅
37: Promote one of your own “deep cut” fics (an underrated one, or one that never got as much traction as you think it deserves!). What do you like about it?
Oh. Hmmm...
Okay. So I know the ME fandom has calmed down quite a bit on AO3. Things are considerably slower than they were not even two years ago. I also don't expect a lot of traction in a rarepair (Shictus). That said...
I posted the original Echoes of a Broken Bond in 2024, but removed it. I'd just finished An Eye for an Eye, and I think a lot of people from that story followed the new one. Then I deleted it because I wanted to rework the whole thing and remind myself I really don't have to detail every little thing that happened.
The old Echoes was doing really well. I'm not gonna complain about the stats on the new Echoes, because I don't think it's doing badly at all. But it's doing considerably worse than the old one. 😅
You have a confused protagonist at the start, a protagonist later who omits the truth to the reader, and a LI who's a bit cryptic at best. And when the truth finally hits, it's explosive at best. Heartbreaking at worst. The readers who read the original kinda knew what was happening. New readers don't, but of course they suspect because a plot twist isn't good unless there've been hints.
It was a tiring fic to write because of how emotional it was. But I actually like it a lot. Here's a lil excerpt from chapter 6:
Back to stacking bottles she goes, now a little calmer. Her lips even curve a bit, but her expression is still tight. Garrus watches her in silence for several beats. Then he clears his throat.
“Can I ask you something, Jane?”
She nods. “Ask away.”
“I’ve been wondering about something.”
“‘Bout what?”
“What Arcturus was like.”
“Arcturus?” She glances at him over her shoulder. “You’re gonna have to be a little more specific than that. The station? The vibe? The clubs?”
“Going through the N7-program,” he says.
“Oof. Tiring as hell.” She chuckles; too fast, too light. “Why?”
“Because I just discovered something interesting.”
“Oh, yeah? What’s that?”
“Victus was there at the same time you were.”
She stills completely. Mid-motion, mid-breath. Garrus hears her swallow once, hard. Watches her turn around and stare at him, jaw tight, eyes wary.
Got you.
“Weird coincidence, right?” he says.
“Very weird.”
“We’ve been friends long enough now. I’ll drop it if you tell me to, but don’t even try to insult me by lying to my face,” he tells her firmly. “I know you didn’t just meet him three days ago.”
Silence. Long, awkward, tense. Her shoulders sag with a long exhale. She leans her elbows on the bar counter and watches him. That look in her eyes comes back. The one he still can’t quite place.
“You really wanna hear about this?” she asks.
“I wouldn’t have asked otherwise.”

29: What songs would be (or are) on a playlist for [insert fic]? Explain your choices if you want?
So am I supposed to just pick a fic? 👀 Any fic I want?
Too much power. I'll yeet myself into the sun. 😭
I rarely make playlists for the fics I write. I've done it once because I went down a rabbit hole and now I'm stuck with a playlist tailored to these three fools I keep writing about.
Since this is about fanfic and not my books... This song would fit An Eye for an Eye really well:
Man cheats on woman. Woman vows revenge.
Did you really just say, "She didn't mean anything"?
I'll remember those words when I come for your soul--your soul
Yooooouuuu... you dug your own grave, now lie in it
You're so cruuuuuuuel... but revenge is a dish best served cold!
Come on now. 💀 That's the fic. Girlie pop even gets her revenge twice over because I was out for blood when I wrote it.
32: What’s your ideal fic length to read?
I actually have more of a preference on chapter length than fic length. If I know I'm about to dive into a longfic, I expect a book-length fic.
If it's a one-shot...
Actually, I do have a preference with one-shots. 3-7k words. Dunno why.
11: Are you partial to a certain character/pairing or are you more equal-opportunity? If you are partial to any character/pairing, why do you think that is?
I definitely am partial to some pairings more than others, buuuut I guess you could also call me a multi-shipper.
Shakarian and Shega are the two Mass Effect ones I keep coming back to.
- Shakarian has that best friends to lovers thing and lots of healthy communication. It's just... sweet. Feels good.
- Shega gets me excited in a different way. Way more openly and directly flirty. Prime "this is just casual" material.
Trevelyan/Cullen is my personal winner in Dragon Age. I'm also really partial to any!man/Dorian and any!inquisitor/Iron Bull.
- Cullen's is the one romance that makes my stomach tingle more than any other romance in any other game. Yes, it even beats Shakarian for me.
- Iron Bull was my first romance. I love how playful and kinky it is, and how cute it is beneath all that.
- Dorian... god, I love that man. His sassy ass is just *mwah*, and his romance is really sweet and emotional.
As for characters... Cullen, Garrus, Castis, Garrus' mom, Shepard, James, Dorian, Iron Bull, and Varric. I just connect with them in different ways or find them interesting as hell.
40: Do you tend to reread fics or are you a one-and-done kind of person?
I usually am a one-and-done kind of person. There are fics I reread multiple times, but they are far and few between. Not because they're bad--god no--but because I don't have a lot of time and need to prioritize it. 😅
39: Is any aspect of your writing process inspired by other writers or people? If so, who?
I had to catch myself here because writing process is different from writing style, Mich, and you know that. 😅
I don't know who does things like this. It's just a thing I've probably heard and adopted because yeah, it works really well.
In short: Draft ugly, edit pretty.
For fanfic, I do things in 3 rounds, maybe 4 if I'm up to it.
I list the beats of the scene.
I write out each beat and connect them.
I diversify my sentences and cut what feels like fluff.
Read for flow, maybe edit again.
For my books... well, that's a totally different story, isn't it? 😅 Because now I have a targeted word count to worry about, so I add 2-3 more steps. Read aloud and edit. Distance myself fully. Sharpen the scalpel and ask "does this really sparkle and sunshine?"
45: What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?
I'd hoped someone would ask this question. I can talk about the writing journey for ages because I've gone through a few phases now and feel like I've learned so much. 🙈
What's so fun about writing is that there really aren't a lot of rules. However, there are certainly a lot of things that will make a scene stronger.
I've improved my word count drastically. Shortened, that is, and that's a good thing.
I've stopped hand-holding the reader and trust them to get it the first time I say it. This is mainly why I cringe when I reread my really old stories. They're a mess of "lemme just add some internal monologue to make sure you REALLY got it", the lot of them.
I'm considerably better at showing instead of telling these days, and I think that ties nicely to the previous point.
I've found my style and voice, which is very Nordic Noir-adjacent direct and minimalist prose. I'm just not gifted enough to get poetic without making it too purple, though whenever I have a British head voice, my writing style becomes looser (case in point: Fifty Sovereigns).
And I'll say that it wasn't really fanfic that really kickstarted that learning curve. I don't have a beta. Not because I don't want one, but more because... idk. I just don't have one. 😅 Anyway, it was editing my own original book that really made me better. I still keep things a little looser in fanfiction because honestly? Fanfiction is fun. I'm not gonna torture my way through more editing than necessary when I'm not even expecting to get paid. I just want it readable, fun, enjoyable, and all the other good adjectives.
Oh fuck I just realized you already answered 1. Do 23 instead!
Imma do this one first, my dear. 😁
23: What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?
I've always been intrigued by the thought of writing an enemies to lovers story, but I haven't touched it yet. I've yet to find something that I'd call a true enemies to lovers with good pacing. Either they fall in love too quickly, it's one-sided hate, the hate isn't that serious, or the guy eats the woman out once and suddenly he professes his undying love to her 2 seconds after she cums in his mouth, which... fair. Pussy's great and all, but I don't buy it.
It's also one of those tropes where I wonder what the appeal really is, because I've never met someone I dislike greatly that I'd like to fuck. 😅
Dani/Garrus and Bee/Cullen, someone might mention. I don't classify those as enemies to lovers. Not really. Bee and Cullen will argue a lot, but there's a baseline of "we fucking enjoy this banter" beneath it. Dani and Garrus... sure, I see this point a bit better. But while she's an outlaw and he's a bounty hunter, there's no hate there. They respect each other's competence, she's intrigued by his sketches, and he feels things when she goes into a certain mode with him.

1: What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)
Oh. 👀
That depends on the flavor because what I write ranges from deeply emotional and traumatic to just... smut and unhinged stuff. 🤪
Emotional: Echoes of a Broken Bond - Female Shepard/Adrien Victus.
Now, this needs a good editing round, but the core story? Sorry to lick my own cunt here, but I adore it. Tears were shed. I got yelled at a few times in the comment. "I hate you (affectionately)" still makes me smile.
Unhinged: how to flirt with your commander - Female Shepard/Garrus Vakarian.
Unhinged in a "mich goes wild with the comments and usernames" way. Lots of fun. The CSS/HTML? Weeeell...
Smut: Hiding in the Closet - Female Shepard/Garrus Vakarian.
The first second person POV story I ever wrote aaaand my most kudosed ME-fic. One-shot smut and the title is extremely literal.
Bonus! Unhinged smut: Let Her Run - Not even gonna name all the pairings.
Lots of knotting, kink, consensual drug-play, and one of the most unhinged sentences I've ever written, I think: "I'll fuck you so good you'll forget my son's name."
10: How do you decide what to write?
If I'm sleep deprived: Get unhinged but still tropey what-if idea. Get excited. Write it down. Usually short and snappy.
If I'm not sleep deprived: Find a theme of something and joke about it once to myself "wouldn't it be fun if xyz" and then see what kind of reaction I get. Maybe I double-check with some writing buddies too just to see what the temperature of the idea is. Then I sit down and write plot. If I can follow the thread from start to finish (without details), then I have a story. If I can't... it might go on the backburner, or it might just get trashed--depends on how I feel.
16: What’s an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?
Scorpio Rising
dangerously fine & unforgiven
Rope Tricks 😏
There are more. I just know there are. But my brain isn't cooperating right now.
And I'm sorry to be THAT person, but The Shape of a Lie is an AU I'd love to read, so I'm writing it. 😂
On this note, I just opened Dabble for the first time in fucking months. First of all, they've updated everything and it looks so good. NO AI BULLSHIT!!! HELL TO THE FUCKING YEAH!!!
Anyway, I found this:
Naturally, I got really fucking intrigued. Edited it in February and all that good stuff; of course I opened it. The hell was this, right?
...ooookaaay.
...uh-huuuuh.
And now I'm like "okay, what does the outline say? maybe I can figure it--"
👁️👄👁️
I obviously had a plan but when the chapter notes look like this, I... I give up.
This is going to annoy me for ages. No, I still have no idea what this was supposed to be.
