I’m not the only one who’s said this a million times. But if someone doesn’t ask for criticism, don’t give it.

I got that top comment a few days ago. I didn’t approve it until today because I was blown away, which I stated in my reply to them. I was nice as I could be, all things considered. And because I didn’t ask for their criticism, I felt the need to defend myself. 

In my reply, I told them it was still offensive, and that it was extremely assuming to talk about other races reading this type of book, not knowing if I was a POC myself. Which I informed them I was biracial. And that we shouldn’t forget hair dye/bleach exist, not that everyone has dyed hair. 

Said, thank you for coming to my TED talk, and told them to have a good day/night.

When I did, I was met with hostility I didn’t feel was necessary.

Even if I did sound rude in my own comment, this was absolutely unneeded. My point being, if you give unwanted criticism, and you’re met with someone who doesn’t like it, don’t fucking lash out at them. Even if you say you “don’t mean to offend”, that doesn’t mean it won’t offend. Frankly, that’s just you trying to cover your ass.

Also, just a reminder shit like this can SERIOUSLY damage someone’s creative ability and flow. Stuff like this can absolutely make someone think their stuff isn’t worth it then, and be rid of the whole thing. So think before you type. 

I’m going to say this until my last breath, but if someone doesn’t ask for criticism, don’t give it to them. It takes $0.00 to not say a damn word. If you ever think about doing it, just imagine someone coming up to you and saying that your hair looks weird, or that your clothes are awful. Didn’t want that, did you? But you still got it even if you didn’t ask. And remember, if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say shit at all.

Proceeds to be wildly offensive

Listen guys, you’re never entitled to give criticism without asking. It’s rude, it’s uncalled for and trust me, most of the time you’re going to be met with hostility because you’ve upset the person. You have NO idea what the person behind the screen is going through. How do you know they don’t have Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (like I do), and aren’t going to literally start crying, or be down for days because you decided that because it’s on the internet it’s free game to criticize?

You should ASK before giving crit, and if the person says no then you respect that and walk away. If I walked up to you on the street and said, “Wow, your haircut is weird, you should change that.” you’d be offended right? There is no difference between doing that and giving unasked for crit to an artist or writer, especially if said artist or writer is doing it FOR FREE. If you’re paying for the work, you are absolutely free to give crit because it’s a PAID FOR PRODUCT and you deserve to get what you asked for as long as you’ve been communicating properly with the artist or author you’ve commissioned.

And before someone says criticizing hair is different than criticizing art or writing, you’re wrong. Art, and writing is how someone expresses themselves and releases their creativity. Hair is the same. We cut it into different styles, or dye it to express ourselves, and show creativity. If I said to you, “Well, if you don’t want me giving “advice” on your hair, then you should just be bald.” is exactly the same as when someone says to an artist or writer, “Well, if you don’t want your stuff to be given criticism then you shouldn’t post on the internet.” 

There’s no difference.
