background - danny can't stop thinking about the beautiful nurse who examined him a few days prior, and attempts to find out more about her.
a few days had passed since lieutenant danny walker's examination, yet somehow, the nurse's face still managed to find its way into his thoughts at the most inconvenient times.
it was becoming a problem.
danny sat in the cockpit of his aircraft, listening to the instructor explain the next portion of their flight training. he knew he should have been paying attention. he usually did. flying was the one thing that could make him forget everything else.
"you planning on joining us today?"
a few of the other pilots snickered.
danny straightened in his seat, "yes, yes sir."
from beside him came a quiet chuckle. it was rafe.
danny shot him a warning look, but rafe only raised an eyebrow, clearly amused.
as soon as they were dismissed from training, rafe fell into step beside him.
danny glanced over. "alright what?"
danny frowned. "who's who?"
"the girl you've been thinking about all week, who else?"
"i'm not thinking about anyone."
rafe laughed and rolled his eyes. "right."
"then why were you staring into space during every briefing?"
"i wasn't! rafe you've gotta stop ragging on me. there's seriously no girl."
"you nearly walked into a wall yesterday."
danny's face warmed with embaressment, "i did not!"
"i was looking at something."
danny sighed, shoving his hands into his pockets.
"wait a minute, it's that nurse, isn't it? hah! i knew i could figure it out!"
rafe turned around to face him, looking far too pleased with himself.
"the one from the hospital."
danny stared at him in astonishment.
"oh, it absolutely is. wow, i'm good."
danny rubbed the back of his neck, looking away.
"look, she's just... nice... i don't know..."
"that's what we're calling it?"
danny shook his head and continued walking.
"you don't even know her name?"
"i didn't exactly have time to ask."
"well, that's pretty convenient."
rafe gave him another knowing look.

by the end of the afternoon, danny had convinced himself that he had a perfectly reasonable excuse to return to the hospital.
he just needed some paperwork.
at least, that's what he told himself.
the truth was considerably more embarrassing.
he wanted to know more about her.
he didn't even know her first name, which was one thing, among others, that had been bothering him for days.
so, after finishing his duties, danny found himself walking through the hospital corridors with absolutely no idea what he was going to say.
he couldn't exactly walk up to her and ask, that would be strange.
instead, he spotted two nurses organizing supplies near the end of the hallway.
he could ask them, casually, without making it obvious.
danny approached them, attempting to look as though he had every reason in the world to be there.
one of the nurses looked up.
he suddenly realized he hadn't actually thought this through.
"i'm looking for some information."
danny swallowed, cursing himself for not coming up with a more thorough plan.
the woman raised an eyebrow.
danny's mind went completely blank.
"i... uh... i don't... remember."
he remembered her perfectly.
her smile, the way she had laughed when he couldn't read the chart, the little crease between her eyebrows when she concentrated on writing something down, and, most annoyingly, the exact color of her eyes.
the nurse looked mildly confused.
danny quickly added, "i was examined here a few days ago."
"are you looking for your medical records?"
his eyes wandered down the hallway.
before either nurse could respond, danny stepped backward.
unfortunately, there was a supply cart directly behind him.
his elbow caught the edge, and the cart tipped.
metal clattered against the floor as several boxes and medical supplies spilled across the hallway.
both the nurses and danny stared at the mess, and for several seconds, nobody said anything.
"well," one of the nurses finally said, "that was graceful."
danny closed his eyes for half a second.
"sorry, ma'am, i'll clean it up."
he crouched down immediately and began hurriedly gathering the scattered supplies, his face burning.
and then he heard a familiar voice from behind him.
he slowly looked over his shoulder, and there she was, standing just a few feet away.
she looked tired, as though she had been working since early that morning, but there was still that same amused smile on her face.
danny stood up far too quickly.
he looked down at the mess.
a small laugh escaped her.
danny rubbed the back of his neck.
"i... uh... usually have better coordination than this."
danny couldn't help but smile too.
she glanced down at the scattered supplies.
"i'm not sure, i think i'm starting to question that."
for a moment, neither of them said anything.
danny realized he was staring again.

you had thought about him more than you wanted to admit.
over the past few days, his face had appeared in your thoughts at the strangest times.
while you were getting ready for work, eating breakfast, and sometimes even while you were trying to fall asleep.
all you knew was that he was lieutenant danny walker, an army air corps pilot who had somehow managed to turn a routine eye examination into the most memorable part of her week.
and now he was standing in front of you, surrounded by medical supplies he had just knocked onto the floor.
you had to bite back another laugh.
he looked exactly as nervous as he had the first time you'd met him.
his cheeks were flushed, and you could almost make out what looked to be beads of sweat running down his neck.
"what brings you back here?" you asked with a soft smile.
for a second, he seemed to debate whether he should tell you.
he glanced toward the nurses he'd been talking to, then back at you.
"i wanted to ask about something."
his fingers fidgeted with the edge of one of the boxes in his hands.
he stopped and cleared his throat.
his face immediately turned red.
"not- not in a strange way..."
"i didn't think it was strange."
you could tell that he was struggling to find the words, which was strangely endearing.
"i didn't get your name the other day."
"so you came all the way back here to find out my name?"
danny looked down, embarrassed.
"well, you could've just asked me."
a quiet laugh escaped him.
"i didn't think I'd be able to."
danny looked at you again, this time, he held your gaze.
"because i seem to forget how to speak whenever you're around."
for once, you were the one who didn't know what to say.
the hallway suddenly felt much quieter.
danny seemed to realize what he'd admitted and immediately looked away.
"i'm sorry," he mumbled. "that sounded better in my head."
"no. i think it sounded just fine."
danny looked back at you.
you finally told him your name.
he repeated it quietly, almost as if he wanted to make sure he remembered it perfectly.
he glanced down at the supplies scattered around them.
"i should probably finish cleaning this up."
"i think that's a good idea," you smiled and nodded in response.
you crouched down to help him gather the remaining supplies when both your hands reached for the same box at the same time.
neither of you moved for a moment.
