Time for my finale rant. Amazing Digital Spoilers below. Not tagging it to save my peace:
The worst crime of tadc was those dragging therapy-speak scenes. They were annoying every time they appeared in earlier episodes, but it really showed how bad the writing was when their finale's resolution relied on it.
You can write a heart-to-heart without it being boring and fake-sounding. You can share your message without the characters giving advice like they all just read an article about healthy communication. The only time these conversations were a meaningful clash of viewpoints was when Jax was involved because he was the only character the writers would allow to act mean or contrary!
Caine was immune because he was so aloof and unaware. If a character tried talking to him with this style of conversation, it would slide off him like water on a duck. So when the end of your finale takes this socially inept fool and makes him say EXACTLY THE RIGHT THING in his attempt to apologize- it's not satisfying! It's DEFINITELY not realistic! It's boring! It also kind of feels like 'Hey- do you struggle to connect with others? Don't!'
Why in the world did they make Pomni deal with the Jax situation and THEN bring Caine into the episode?! Why not have Jax abstract and nobody has any clue what to do, but Pomni is sure she can get through to him. Then Caine appears and he offers to help. Instead of Caine completing his character arc in the void, let him do most of his pondering and discover the human identities, but still struggle with his need for control and he doesn't want to admit it was his fault.
So Caine tries to prove himself by helping Pomni with Jax, but he has to do it according to her rules to earn her trust. He argues and is incredibly difficult, but he's trying. Things reach a boiling point, they have a fight, everyone is hopeless, Jax attacks, Pomni lures him into the dark, does the hug, cue Jax stuff. Caine is trying to help and he's the one who accidentally boots Pomni out of the Jax-world. Jax rampages and Caine is certain he can fix him. He tries and Pomni sees Jax start breaking down, like Caine is accidentally destroying him. So she has this heart to heart with Caine about how you can't 'fix' people and sometimes the best way to help them is to stop pushing. You can't control everything.
She gets through to Caine, they get Jax into a blanket fort, Caine is now mostly chill with the group and he's like 'now that we're friends, I can show you what I found' and the ending happens like normal.
My version has issues, but the original just had no meaningful conflict. Characters being sad and going through terrible events is NOT conflict! A character walking through someone's mind and watching them explain their trauma until they unlock the key to deeper parts of then is NOT meaningful conflict- it's an info dump! Pomni did nothing to convince Jax to show her each scene in Jax-land. She just sat there and listened to him talk- which I GUESS could be the message, but it's a pretty boring one to watch in your SERIES FINALE!!! There should have been things happening constantly to push Pomni out of Jax's mind and she finds ways to avoid them using what she's learned about Jax to prove that- yeah- they were ACTUAL FRIENDS! Where is the scene where loony-toons Jax tries painting holes and doors to shove pomni out of and she uses his fear of corn to scare him off? Where's the scene where snarky maid Jax and Pomni get into a shoot-out and she already knows his tricks? Where's the scene where the final Jax refuses to let her in and shows no emotion until she finally proves she KNOWS him! THAT'S when you use your dumb therapy-speak! All the 'yada-yada-yada' solving problems through the show and yet you can't use it to solve your climax?! Not that they even let Jax be the climax. They finish him off and then go out with a whimper on the Caine stuff. Because the villain having an arc ALONE is WAYYYY more interesting than the resolution of a complicated friendship (sarcasm is sarcastic)
The finale was poorly written. There were choices that were made that I think were dumb, but even removing those, the structure and conflict is BAD. It was unsatisfying and the longer I think about it and try to find parts I enjoyed the more I realize how unsatisfying it was. I get that this is an indie studio, but they can do better. It was just disappointing and flat.

Howdy Everyone! I wanted to share this amazing art by Anna Cooper (Champion Comics) of all of our characters in the Actual Play, The Written and the Lost! (P.s. these will also be available to buy as post cards later)
5. How did you choose their name and why? Was it simply based on vibes or is there any specific meaning behind the name? Are the reasons behind their name different in- and out of universe?
alden's name is old english, and it means "old friend" or "wise friend"! he and bellamy were created names-first, and since i originally created them to be imaginary friends, i picked their names by looking up "names that mean friend" under the covers at like eleven o'clock at night and then digging until i found something pretty and unique :) alden's personality accidentally ended up aligning with his name meaning all on its own; i love that it still matches him so well <3
9. How big is their role in the story? Do they make a frequent appearance or are they a character with little "screentime" but big influence? Or are they just a favourite background guy?
frequent appearance, big influence! alden is the third member of the main cast and lives in an apartment a five minute walk from bella and viv's. he's probably going to get a good bit of pov, too, especially later in the story.
10. What is their main character arc in the story? Where do they start and how do they develop? Do they get a happy ending or is their story a tragic one?
alden spends the first part of the story as the girls' safety netβ he's struggling a lot with his own identity as well as being unsure of what he's meant to do to about their situation, but he knows he can: pick vivian up and bring her home when she's been. out., help with crisis management and harm reduction, go grocery shopping for bellamy, answer calls at two am, take vivian on walks to get her out of the house, and generally just be there for anything they ask of him. so he does that. he does everything he can think of. he shows up daily for both of them.
until it runs him into the ground. and then, when he cant take it anymore, he disappears. literally. im not going to say too much about alden's solo arc, but he has his whole own side plot where he finally takes time for himself, addresses the damage caused in his childhood, and figures out who he really wants to be and what that means. he has a bit of a spiritual revelation and comes back changed, and his personal shift in the way he sees things is what finally forces a change in bellamy and vivian. and he gets to grow wings and be himself and im so happy for him!! it's good stuff, he's got a really interesting mind to work with and im excited for his arc :D

he is. comically bad at cooking. he tries his best, he really does, but whenever anyone asks about alden's cooking capabilities i send them that picture of the pot of spaghetti on fire skdjfh
he's a pinterest boy <3 he dreams of being a photographer, but for now he just takes pictures on his phone and posts them on pinterest
he's the guy who's full of the most unhinged shower thoughts and spits them out every time there's a silence. yknow those blogs like just-shower-thoughts? he has all of them memorized. theyll just be chilling on the couch and out of nowhere alden will go "shirts are crazy, your body goes in one hole and comes out three"
he's a jack-of-all-trades-but-master-of-none in the creative field, dabbling in piano, watercolor, whittling, photography, and sketching
ask him about his collection of nature trinkets! he's got shadow boxes full of feathers and rocks and bugs and miscellany he finds in the woods, all beautifully organized and pinned and labeled <3
