okay so we need to talk about birthday gifts because i feel like we're all still defaulting to gift cards and bouquets like it's 2012.

here's the thing nobody tells you about gifting — the price tag is basically irrelevant. what makes someone emotional over a gift is the feeling that someone actually thought about them. like specifically them. not just "person who has a birthday."

everyone shows up for the baby.

which makes sense, obviously. tiny person! brand new! very exciting. but somewhere in all that excitement, the woman who literally grew a human being for nine months and then pushed (or was cut open for) said human being quietly becomes set dressing.

she's holding the baby in every photo. she's smiling. she's saying "we're so happy, we're so tired, it's so worth it." and she means it. but she's also running on three hours of sleep, hasn't eaten a proper meal since tuesday, and cannot remember what it felt like to have five minutes that belonged entirely to her.
