Even on a busy evening, Av. Paulista, São Paulo is flanked and framed by trees. Though the city has removed much of its native Mata Atlântica, and replaced many exotic species where there are plantings (- trend @ricardo__cardim is working hard to reverse!), still its trees offer so many reminders of how connected we all are. #citytrees #urbantrees #mataatlântica #mataatlantica #saopaulo #natureza #weneedtrees #treesdontneedus (at Avenida Paulista)
Loved the opportunity to understand, listen, learn and connect with the hard-working, deep-thinking people of Fibria and their community partners in Aracruz earlier this week. A brief moment at the sea’s edge in the morning was a bit of grounding before re-immersing myself with the humans (and of course picking up a few pieces of ocean plastic...). #grateful #inspired #challenged #brasil #brazil #fibria #sustentabilidade #sustainability #naturalclimatesolutions (at JacaraÃpe, Espirito Santo, Brazil)
Several flocks of humans cited in their (semi-) natural urban habitat earlier today on a glorious run in sunny #CentralPark #cityparks #nycparks #getoutside #weneedparks #weneedtrees
And then this was the #birdruckus competing with the city just a few hundred yards away from that newly #carfree stretch of #centralPark. What a difference - and this is in a holiday where there is minimal traffic. #carfreeparks #nycparks #livablecities #weneedbirds #birdsdontneedus

This was the #birdruckus in the newly #carfree #CentralPark at 9am this morning, at what was the busiest intersection of cars, when there were cars. Although his song is crowded out by the sparrow closer to the mic, there is a cardinal having a great time calling to his mate if you listen very closely. #carfreeparks #nycparks #livablecities #weneedbirds #birdsdontneedus
Trail running. Where everything is a sign. #trees #forest #trails #trailrunning #getoutside #tickchecktime
The effect of moving shadows - here cast by leaves fluttering first slowly, then quickly - feels like a video without any technology (although I happened to have captured it on my iPhone). I often wonder what it must have been like many generations back, when spectacles such as reflections of water on rocky shores, or the magical movement of the northern lights, or even shifting leaf shadows such as these, were observed. I am not sure about back then but for me, today, I find it completely awesome. And I really mean "awe" here.
There is something magical about the combination of leaves + sunlight + wind. #trees #timeoutside #freshair #longisland
Hello, beautiful dead dragonfly, Looks like you maybe hit the glass of this shop with all the plants in the window on E. 57th St. Or maybe you perished higher up and simply happened to land here? I wonder where you were heading? You blend in with the bluish sidewalk cement and the litter. No one seems to notice you, yet your ephemeral wings and amazing shape are wonders to behold. I am sorry you had to die here and not on a wildflower-strew lakeshore or in a frenzy of insect-eating in a bug cloud with your buddies. I am grateful for having seen you, though. Dear wonderful #streettrees of #NYC,
We cut you down because we couldn’t stop hurting you, or because you were kinda in our way.
We plant pretty flowers around you - which sometimes we also kill through our neglect - confusing you as a thing to decorate around.
We cram you in boxes and railings, walls and barriers, like an elephant crammed into a circus crate, because we are oblivious of the knowledge you freely share.
We haven’t - yet! - learned how to imagine ourselves into a reality where we exist with you in ways that make us all better off, instead of at your expense. We can change that, though, and people are starting to pay more attention to you. It looks like you might finally be getting your proverbial day in the sun. At least, it seems more possible now.
I hope you accept this humble hint of an offer, my #houseplant cuttings (last photo),in the spirit of giving you something back, some hint of additional organic matter for your soil. I also really hope I didn’t transfer any unwanted fungi or insects that might inadvertently do you harm! I figure it can’t be worse than what you put up with all day, but maybe I am just another misguided human hurting trees again - fingers crossed that’s not the case.
Now my job is to figure out why I felt like a criminal dumping my indoor plant offerings onto you when the other stuff that gets done to you all day passes for normal - even tax-payer funded - activity.
Sorry we’ve been such jerks and thanks for making this city survivable.
Yours in connectedness,
L:
