Personally I think her inclusion in modern adaptations often causes unwelcome questions like why does she help there but not there or couldn't Athena fix this. Or she functions as a literal deus ex machina which is nowadays considered bad writing.

For example, EPIC fixes this by having her and Odysseus have a falling out early on so it makes sense he can't get divine assistance for a majority of the story. This raises the stakes compared to having a godly telephone joker and works pretty well for a relatively human Athena.

I still think you can absolutely include Athena more but for a modern piece of media, ideally you'll want some underlying lore why Athena acts the way she does and what she can and can't do. A myth doesn't need that as much cos myths are basically 100% suspension of disbelief and "because I said it's possible" (and that is completely fine ofc) but if you tell a narrative story for modern audiences they will have different expectations for character consistency, so it might be difficult to include Athena being very involved one moment and not at all involved in the next, so they just go for overall less involvement

Roy led every higher-up to believe he was just a fuckboy and a manwhore in this for his own ego and that they shouldn't view him as any kind of violent revolutionary like "no sir I'm just a slut."

Which. is an absolutely batshit primary character backstory to mention once, late in the series, and then immediately move on from.

And actually Hiromu Arakawa did it so well that every single fan interpretation of Roy Mustang for the FMA03 anime treated him as an honest to god man-slut. Bought his whole act hook line and sinker.
