If your game has a "bad" choice that a player can choose, then it's nearly impossible to make them take the "game" part out of the equation. They will always think "the game will surely punish me for choosing this".

Conversely, if you make a survival game where, from time to time, there's an UFO flying overhead and out of reach; and then like 10 hours into the game you give the player a gun; I suspect 90% of them would shoot at the UFO

I think the lesson here is, if the choice is presented in a "game-y" way (like button prompts or dialogue choices), then it obviously looks like a part of the game. But if the choice is presented with agency, and using game mechanics, then it's much more likely that it will be performed honestly.
