@mindwalker-elsbeth
It's half an hour before the Scrolls and Scales bookstore closes for the day. He's tasked himself with pulling books from the shelves for orders to be completed the next day. He catches sight of one of his newly hired employees, recalling something he might have seen earlier.
"Elsbeth. A moment, please?" His tone is calm as he catchers her attention, pausing in his task face her as he speaks again.
"May I speak to you once closing tasks have been completed? I'd like to ask you something." Keen brown eyes peer at her behind the round glasses perched on his nose.
PREVIOUS (1)
"I promise you're not in any trouble, but I am rather curious..." He should just get to the point.
"How did you keep it from falling? Not physically, from what I saw?" He leans a bit closer to her, hoping that he's not coming across as being nosy.
"Did you use some sort of magic to save it?" His tone and expression are curious. And perhaps a tad calculating as well.
-
Horror and chagrin flashed across her expression in successive waves, and the set of her shoulders tensed uncomfortably. It was the most unguarded he'd seen since she'd started working here, and with visible effort, she attempted to tame the embarrassed grimace into something more neutral.
"So... you did see that." She certainly didn't sound happy that he had, and she twined fingers into the fabric of her skirt, tugging uneasily in her discomfort. Indeed, he could have easily missed the incident; on her first day, she'd brushed past the teapot and her elbow had caught on its ornate handle, sending it and its lid careening toward the wood floor. Under any other circumstances, the ceramic would have ended up in scattered pieces, but Elsbeth had thrust out a hand in desperation, and right before the expected impact, vessel and lid instead halted inches from the floor, hanging suspended as though by wires, before gently settling on the wood, intact and unharmed.
"I just... cushioned it a little," she said apologetically. "It shouldn't have happened in the first place, and I'm sure it was priceless, and I had to make a decision fast..."
She still hadn't explained what exactly she'd done, though.
Maybe he’s shouldn’t have brought this up after all. They weren’t exactly the closest of friends and she’d only started working of him a little while ago. This had likely been a terrible idea, but he didn’t have much of a choice but to commit now.
“I did. Rather impressive, if that helps.”
One ebony brow raised in response to her words. He could understand that she seemed quite nervous talking about what she’d done. There were plenty of people just as secretive about themselves. Himself included.
Still...
“You just...cushioned it a little?” To say he didn’t believe her was putting it lightly.
“If you’re worried about your job, don’t be. Far be it from me to fire someone from using magic to help.” A reassuring smile replaces the doubtful look. Or at least he hopes that’s what it looks like.
“Accidents happen and I’m grateful for you doing what you did. I really am just curious.”
She smiled sheepishly. "Uh, well... it's not something I like to have people know, about me. It's gotten me into a lot of trouble before, and I've only just moved here, and..." Putting a hand in front of her mouth, she cleared her throat, still uncomfortable but less flustered now. "Sometimes I forget that I don't have to hide it in this town. It's not magic, really. I don't know what it is, properly. But.... I can move things, without touching them. It's not very precise, I'm afraid. Like using a bulldozer to pour a glass of wine. I'm trying to refine it so that I can manipulate things more delicately, but at least it's enough to catch and push things."
He could agree with that. Cobalt's 'culture' did allow a sort of freedom within its limits. His smile is understanding. And apologetic.
"I'm sure this must be a bit uncomfortable to you. To speak about, I mean." After all he's got a few of his own secrets he'd like to keep like that. As secret as possible.
"I didn't mean to out you like this and for that I apologize." He shifted his weight to one side, canting his head to one side.
"Though I do wonder...if you might be able to assist me." If she was willing to help him after he'd likely given a start.

"May I speak to you once closing tasks have been completed? I'd like to ask you something." Keen brown eyes peer at her behind the round glasses perched on his nose.
His new hire, petite and delicate in a pleated sundress, moves with deliberate grace, lowering an armful of books and turning her head to look at him, and only a keen observer would notice the flash of panic, immediately covered and pushed out of sight like an unsightly bit of clutter, in her hazel eyes. "Of course; I just need to finish organizing these titles. Is something wrong, Yue?" She gives him a smile that's almost believable, too bright to be genuine and too sweet to be innocent.
He watches her, though a moment later he meets her smile with one of his own.
"Not at all. Just a simple request. We'll call it...professional curiosity," he responded with a wave of his hand.
"I'll leave you to your task, so don't mind me too much." He turns back to the shelf to survey the books once more, grabbing the last one he needed and adding it to pile on his cart.
"We'll discussing this more at length later." Too many people around and he'd rather hold their conversation in private.
"Professional curiosity?" Her eyebrows twitch up in mild confusion, though the smiling mask does not fall. It does seem just a touch more forced, though. "Okay. We'll talk at closing time, then?"
Carefully, she hefts up the stack of books, slipping the topmost paperback into its alphabetical place on the shelf and taking great care to avoid the antique tea set sitting on the table nearby.
Half an hour later, she would be found behind the counter, switching off lights and running a dust rag over the wood shelving.
Once he's certain the rest of his employees have left for the day, he approaches Elsbeth at the counter with a smile.
"I do apologize for having you stay behind to speak with me." He hopes he isn't coming across as threatening.
"The tea set sitting over on the table," he starts, gesturing to where it's settled safely on one of the small display tables.
"I promise your not in any trouble, but I am rather curious..." He should just get to the point.

"Good morning and welcome to Scales and Scrolls. Did you need help finding a specific title?" - Yue @bloodoftheemperor
@bloodoftheemperor
Aldous looked puzzled. "A specific..." It clicked, and a small smile formed. Now here was an interest of his. "Books, I'm assuming?"
He grins, nodding an affirmative.
“Of course. We have quite the variety here, if I say so myself. Of a range of different subjects as well,” he speaks, gesturing at the bookshelves all over the store.
“If its not here, I can have it ordered for you as well.”
bloodoftheemperor.
Howl’s surprise doesn’t take him aback. His sullen, dark appearance doesn’t exactly scream ‘baker’ after all. Not to mention he’s not exactly the most…friendly of people, the rumors about him aside.
He taps a fingernail against his lips thoughtfully, frowning.
“Perhaps not a bakery. A restaurant would be better. Something with a bit more…variety than just baked goods.” He focuses back on Howl, canting his head to one side.
“Not often. When the mood strike I find myself baking small things. Breads, cookies, smaller pastries. I don’t really have anyone to share them with were I to make larger batches.” Another pause.
“Unless you might be interested in being a…test subject? Or rather a taste tester.” As far as he knows, he can’t think of anyone else that would volunteer for such a task with his reputation.
“I have been wanting to try several cake and pie recipes for some time.”
t̲e̲s̲t̲ ̲ ̲s̲u̲b̲j̲e̲c̲t̲ ? well, that was certainly an interesting way of putting it. howl wished for nothing of the sort, &. would rather have fled a thousand miles than to be called anything like that. although he didn't e̲a̲t̲ much, he still found interest in trying whatever yue made.
❛ yes. although i do hope you continue calling it a taste tester and not a test subject. something about being a test subject just r̲u̲b̲s̲ ̲ ̲m̲e̲ ̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲ ̲ ̲w̲r̲o̲n̲g̲ ̲ ̲w̲a̲y̲. ❜ in spite of his words, he was smiling, though faint. he could cook too. in fact, he could cook relatively decently, but he had never tried his hand at baking anything more than whatever he could slide in an oven for twenty minutes. ❛ i imagine if you have an interest in bakeries and restaurants, your pastries and other foods must be b̲e̲t̲t̲e̲r̲ ̲ ̲t̲h̲a̲n̲ ̲ ̲h̲o̲w̲ ̲ ̲i̲'̲v̲e̲ ̲ ̲i̲m̲a̲g̲i̲n̲e̲d̲. ❜
Half of Yue’s lips twitched in a temporary smile at the request.
“Apologies. Test subject was not the phrase I wished to use. I would be experiment with food, not...well, you understand my point, I hope.” He can’t imagine anyone would be comfortable with being a test subject. For anything. So he could understand Howl’s discomfort.
He crosses his arms over his chest, his expression cool.
“Better than how you’ve imagined? I hope you weren’t imagining my cooking being inedible lumps of coal.” He’s been cooking for years too long to ever be that terrible at cooking.
“...I could bring you something tomorrow, if you’d like. I am supposed to go to market today anyway.”
aight its time to clock out for a bit. im tired, this has me tired. im gonna draw some dragons getting their heads stuck in things. someone give me some ideas

when he looked at yue, the word ‘b̲a̲k̲e̲r̲’ didn't exactly come to mind. not that there was anything wrong with the idea of him being a baker in the first place. he just wasn't the sort to seem like he would enjoy it. but, then again, perhaps howl himself was just a̲ ̲ ̲b̲i̲t̲ ̲ ̲t̲o̲o̲ ̲ ̲u̲n̲y̲i̲e̲l̲d̲i̲n̲g̲ in his considerations. he really ought to let that go, before it got to his head.
❛ opening a bakery of your own ? now that's an idea i never actually considered for you. ❜ after all, howl was nothing if not at least t̲r̲u̲t̲h̲f̲u̲l̲ about his thoughts ! at times, anyways, when the pressure didn't sit square on his shoulders like an indignant cat &. refuse to leave.
thoughts of moving the castle &. the curse's end had fled his mind by now : he was already on to the next subject. f̲a̲r̲ ̲ ̲m̲o̲r̲e̲ ̲ ̲i̲n̲t̲e̲r̲e̲s̲t̲i̲n̲g̲ &. far less existential. ❛ do you bake often ? because if you do, i haven't seen very much of it. or eaten it. i can't help but think i might be missing out. ❜

❛ magician … musician … they both sound so similar. w̲h̲a̲t̲'̲s̲ ̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲ ̲ ̲d̲i̲f̲f̲e̲r̲e̲n̲c̲e̲, really ? ❜ clearly, howl was distracted, given his selfsame distracted tone. he glanced around dreamily at whatever bits of his castle that he could. it had all been so carefully ( or perhaps n̲o̲t̲ ̲ ̲s̲o̲ ̲ ̲c̲a̲r̲e̲f̲u̲l̲l̲y̲ at all ;he was a patient man in everything but working magic in the moment ) crafted that he really couldn't help but feel sad about the possibility of it ever coming apart.
it wouldn’t. he told himself that &. pulled himself back in. his castle could hold up through a lot. he'd made it that way. his gaze s̲l̲i̲d̲ ̲ ̲b̲a̲c̲k̲ ̲ ̲t̲o̲ ̲ ̲y̲u̲e̲ &. stuck. ❛ that's sad. i wouldn't want you r̲o̲a̲m̲i̲n̲g̲ ̲ ̲a̲r̲o̲u̲n̲d̲ now, after having a stable place to go. ❜ no, he'd have to think of something else. when the day came where the witch would find him, the castle had to be properly rooted.
❛ hmm. yue ? i̲f̲ ̲ ̲y̲o̲u̲ ̲ ̲c̲o̲u̲l̲d̲ ̲ ̲d̲o̲ ̲ ̲a̲n̲y̲t̲h̲i̲n̲g̲ ̲ ̲f̲o̲r̲ ̲ ̲a̲ ̲ ̲l̲i̲v̲i̲n̲g̲ not wandering what would it be ? ❜
A hum. Well he wouldn’t exactly be roaming around, as Howl may have described. He did have someplace to go, though it wasn’t nearly as...spacious and decorated. As stable and lived in as Howl’s castle.
His lips quirk in a half smile.
“Not wandering? Well there go my future plans,” he jokes. He genuinely has to consider the wizard’s question. What would he do to make a living if her were a magician?
He brows furrow as he considers the many occupations he’s come across in his travels. What might please him if magic were no longer an option for him. It’s a tough question to think about.
“I don’t rightly know. Perhaps a baker? I’ve become rather fond of the pasties here and in other places.” He shifts his weight to one side, gesturing with a hand.
“Perhaps open my own bakery instead of working for someone else.” He did treasure his independence, after all.

& ‘ *. bloodoftheemperor !
It took some time for most of the flush to his features to disappear. Surely that was the end to Geralt’s prodding on his interests. Hopefully. Though the knowing look shot at him doesn’t seem to point that way.
Giving him a break then. He’d take it.
He’s understanding, if a little disappointed, when Geralt doesn’t reveal much, or anything at all, of his own proclivities.
“Ah. More Witcher secrets? I can yield to that then.” He’s suspicious of Geralt’s vague words, but no more than playfully so.
“I do have another question, however. Why is your horse named ‘Roach’?” he asked, tone and expression confused.
“Seems rather…mean to name such a well cared for mare after a pest.”
he would allow the elf to believe they were witcher secrets for however long he could , even if part of him believed that yue didn’t actually think they were specialised secrets at all . he would be correct , in that case . the witcher did not believe describing any of his proclivities or escapades would yield anything productive out of either of them . besides , he had more important matters to speak of .
like , for instance , the naming of his horse . horses for he named every mare he rode ‘roach’ and never strayed from it once in his entire life .
but yue’s association with the bug had his brows flying upward , a grin of disbelief tugging at his lips before he could help himself . ❛ you think i name my horse after a pest ? no ! you have it wrong . i name my horses after the fish . ❜
Well if that hadn’t stirred a reaction out of the Witcher...As short of a time as it’s been since they’d started traveling together, he doesn’t recall ever seeing Geralt react like that. So...freely.
Still...
His companion’s answer earned a slow, almost disbelieving blink from the elf.
“So...instead of naming her after an insect, you named her after a fish.” He stared at Geralt for a moment, searching to really see whether he was joking or not.
“Honestly, I’m not certain if that’s any better.” He turned his attention to the mare in question, patting her muzzle gently.
“So mean, yes? That’s alright, I’ll spoil you to make up for the name, sweet one.”
