The crackle and pop of dry twigs on the fire pulled Sydney from her sleep, and she cracked an eyelid to find Lucanis carefully feeding the flames. Dry pieces of kindling were stacked neatly beside him as he coaxed the glowing embers back to life. His familiar silhouette stood out in stark relief against the soft purples and starry black of the sky as night gave way to dawn.
She yawned and stretched, pushing the fur blanket from her shoulders and shivering as the cool air hit her skin. Lucanis kept his focus on the fire as he casually pulled his own felted woolen cloak from his pack and passed it to her wordlessly. Sydney rolled her eyes but accepted it, unrolling it and huddling into its warmth.
It smelled of Lucanis.
Of coffee, knife oil, and expensive cologne.
She pulled it tightly around her and moved to sit beside him, her thigh and hip brushing against his as she sought his warmth. His lips quirked as though amused by her cat-like need for heat and he slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her close. Sydney gasped and glanced around in case the others were awake to see their affection.
“They're asleep,” Lucanis murmured softly, his tone rippling with amusement. “Your secret is safe.”
“Our secret,” she corrected.
He snorted and his arm tightened on her waist. “You're the one who wants to keep this a secret. I would be happy to tell the world.”
Sydney glanced at his profile, trying to detect any hurt in his tone as she absently touched the pendant he had bought her in Minrathous, a fade crystal on a beautiful golden chain of Dalish design. He sounded amused if anything, as though her need for secrecy was a game. Well, two could play this game. She smiled cheekily and touched his chin, turning his head towards her as she leaned in and pressed her lips to his.
The kiss was warm and soft, and the contented sigh that escaped Lucanis sent a thrill down her spine. He dropped the kindling into the fire and reached for her, his hand cupping her cheek as he deepened the kiss, his tongue flicking hungrily against her lower lip. Sydney melted against him, lost in his touch and taste as Lucanis momentarily became her whole world.
A groan and muffled curse broke the spell, and she pulled away with a small gasp as Davrin emerged groggily from his tent. He lifted a hand absently in their direction and stumbled towards a nearby stream for water, Assan trotting hopefully after him chirping hungrily. Lucanis grinned and winked at her as he went back to feeding the fire, and Sydney busied herself by rummaging in her bag for morning rations.
Something told her that their secret wouldn't be secret for long.

Summary: Just as the sun breaches the horizon where Lucanis has just finished his watch on the camp he and the team are resting in, he hears annoyed noises coming from one tent containing Rook.

Though her disgruntled pout every time the mere mention of needing to camp came up, gave him pause. Whilst he wasn’t entirely fond of camping either, feeling far too exposed and vulnerable without walls behind his back, he wasn’t sure why Rook, who was formerly Dalish, would have an issue with it other than now she was a Crow too with the same paranoia.
He thought on it as he took a sip of the coffee he’d managed to make with the camp kettle and grimaced at the taste that was almost as bad as what Neve made.
That was the other reason he did not like camping. He could not make good coffee to his standard without the right equipment.
As he flung the offending liquid to the ground, he distinctly heard noise coming from their tent. He perked up at it, focusing his hearing on the sounds and clearly pictured Teleri tossing and turning on the large cot bed, her soft blankets rustling and lithe leg kicking to move it. He also heard her emit a string of angry Dalish words and a groan of annoyance that made him smirk a little.
She certainly did not sound asleep or pleased about it.
