1DBB Round Six is coming! Signups will begin on October 1 (so that anyone who participated in our sister Challenge, the @1dreversebang, won’t have to double up on creating!) 

In the intervening weeks between now and when sign-ups begin, we will be posting updated rules, schedules, etc. But there was one major piece of feedback we received last round regarding the author-artist collaboration that we felt it prudent to address with a massive system overhaul, so we wanted to let you all know about this change first!

This 1DBB Challenge has been a growing (and changing) entity since its inception in the fall of 2012. Our hope has always been to remain true to the original Big Bang, Baby! structure and foster a true collaboration between two very mighty and talented arms of the fandom: the writers, and the artists. In pursuit of this goal, one thing we have tried to balance in each iteration is increasing the amount of time artists have to work on their portion of the collaboration while also reducing the risk of an author not being able to complete their submission or becoming inspired to take the fic in a different direction than originally intended… after an artist already committed to the original summary. 

After one round, we moved the author due dates up and extended the artist deadlines; after two rounds, we introduced the “final commitment” rule of submitting a summary with the rough draft, after which point penalties for author drop-outs got steeper (i.e., banned from participating in the round immediately following). In the last few rounds, we moved the artist sign-ups till later in the round, closer to the Claims post opening, so there was less of a lag between artists signing up and getting involved. 

These strategies worked… until they didn’t. 

Following feedback from participants (authors and artists alike) in Round Five, as well as introduction of new blood in the moderating team, we are implementing a new schedule: Rather than having artists join the party in the latter half of the Challenge and being forced into quick turn-around times, we will have artists claim fics significantly earlier in the timeline. Specifically, claims will occur immediately after the first author check-in (December) – enough time for authors to have a good idea of where their fic is heading, while giving authors and artists three and a half months to work together before final drafts are due.

What does this mean for authors?

For one, you will need to commit to a plot earlier… and if you plan to switch it up, you will need to talk your thoughts over with your artist. However, the good news is that you will have a collaborator much earlier in your journey! No more writing in a vacuum (as some have described it) for the majority of the process. One stipulation of this new set-up is that artists will need to be granted access to your working fic document fairly early in the writing process, whether through google docs, a filehosting site (box, dropbox, etc), or email. This way, you will be able to work closely on creating content together rather than artists coming in during the last month and illustrating your work (through traditional art, or fanmixes, or fanvids, or picspams, or whichever) post-hoc. 

What does this mean for artists?

Instead of having just a month (maaaybe six weeks) at the end of the writing period - more if given a later posting date and a draft extension - artists will have up to three and a half months to collaborate with the author on a joint final product. We want very much for artists to feel like the integral part of the process that they are, rather than a last-minute add-on. We hope that this new structure will allow both author and artist to conjointly create a unified final product, rather than unilaterally working on a two-part end product (i.e., artists begin given a final or near-final draft to create art from).

One final note:

Our schedule structure worked less well in Round Five than in any other previous round. We acknowledge that, and we’re sorry for it. The Round Six team has talked this new approach over multiple times, comparing it (both its potential highlights and pitfalls) with other possible solutions for several weeks now, and we have high hopes for its efficacy!

In light of adjusting our approach in response to feedback from Round Five, we offer up tabula rasa: anyone can participate under this new structure, even those previously banned from Round Six. If you feel like you would work well under this new type of structure, we encourage you to sign up.
