It's spits-in-your-eye eve
but reprieveless, ever at the precipice of the big event
and the langouring smack-dab in the height of the named shenanigans,
festivities, whatever we've decided was worth endless press
and swapping various lenses out to get clever ancillary angles,
it's a holiday we never wanted that won't go away.
So, same as any setup, someone's at the center,
a focus to rack over, and then instigator (or other locus
with no love of being observed) watches dauntingly, stews in daunt,
wants it thick and unctuous and slimed over everything,
a countryside like a mucous-membrane gotten away from its enclosure
and grazing gracefully. This is just the set-dressing.
We wake, we eke, one gleans meager fields
mechanically separated which means leavings to gather,
one rathers the greases of pizza-cardboard,
one was in your attic's rafters having to time
what life-functions could be accomplished in the span of a shower,
one was an arroyo where water wasn't then was
too fast and with unknown takeaways who didn't know
the predictable route.
Apocryphal hockey-slalom had planned a level plane
and damnably went uneven with one end up.
We're still eking, we're still eating-up what's a world
as if we weren't sick of the sick it makes of us,
as it we weren't slick with the assigned oozes of the time and place
we were incidental to, not even the target.
We forgot our fringes, dislodged our wayward or waylaying cilia
willynillying where the magnetics would have us,
halve the fare of any paranormal means of conveyance between us,
gleam with the sweats we get up to and get worked-up inside,
slide along our lubricated route unhubbubiously,
reside in diners until the state of us shakes off
or has slaked silly its need to overstay,
would welp and engage knees but be caught-up in a second-helping,
hem and haw and squelch in our oversaturation,
steam like amphibians meeting sunrise
wishing to rinse but the instigated watering-hole distances itself,
increasing instances of drought or forgetting where to go
ride us around like the successful questing-mechanism of ticks.
Everything sticks, and stinks,
and evidences how it's of and against the body,
static crackling en route, minuscule offshoots of light
not capable of the nonchalant slow-mo of tendrils,
nothing about us knowing how to grow.
Earth is spurious, sparrows narrow on us,
all our granite substrate is plagued with cracks
which brim with the stuff of slugs, which we lug with us just in case.
