golf critic

Living in a state that doesn't allow for golf all year round has a lot of positives and negatives.  Having an actual off season does make me miss the game when the snow falls and almost makes me forget that I was "over it" when the season was coming to an end.  

There's a lot of good golf being played this weekend, but it's nice to see some familiar names like Phil playing so well.  Kuchar is off to such a hot start.  If he can keep this going, he will definitely be contending in some majors.  I firmly believe that Augusta will be his best and only chance. Despite his seniority and classic play, there must be something about Links courses that don't fit his eye.  

Off the course it's been a weird week.  Dustin Johnson broke his silence, kind of.  That interview really didn't give us any more insight into what happened.  Allenby continues to make headlines, but for the wrong reason.  Did he learn nothing from the Tiger scandal?  

Tomorrow marks that start of the 2014 PGA Show in Orlando.  Like many golf fans, I wish I was there.  I even tried to get a Fantasy Golf bet with Gary Williams last year on twitter.  He didn't respond, but who could blame him.  

Today's demo day had me day dreaming about the new products that are out there and what setup I would have if money was not object.  If I had the chance to walk into the show tomorrow and restock my bag with all new gear, here's what I would go with (all items were chosen based on performance and the way they set up).  If any manufacturers reading this and wanted to send me something, my irons and hybrids are .5 inches longer.

Driver - Toss up Ping G30 and the Nike Vapor. 

Fairway Wood (3W) - Callaway XRSpeed (maybe 3 Deep)

Hybrids (3, 4, and 5) - Yes, I'm a weak hitter and need three hybrids.  Callaway Big Bertha

Irons - TaylorMade RSi 1  6 - PW

Wedges - 50 Vokey TVD, 55 Cleveland 588 RTX 2.0, 60 Ping Glide 

Putter - I really love my putter, but since I'm getting a free one I'd go with a Odyssey Metal X-Milled #1 Wide with a SuperStroke Fatso 2 grip. 

Shoe - Footjoy HyperFlex in White/Grey/Blue

Ball - Titleist NXT 

Bag - Well I walked in the door with mine.  How else would I be able to carry around all of these clubs?  

As a skier and a golfer it was very interesting when Lindsey Vonn began dating Tiger Woods.  Two of my favorite sports, coming together.  

Vonn has been on a hot streak after battling a terrible injury.  I'm sure that Tiger is curious as to how she did it.  It was great to see that she became the most accomplished female skier in history.  What were the headlines?  Tiger Woods was there and somehow a camera man knocked out one of his front teeth.  How is this the headline? I get it, I'm writing about it too.  

Are we supposed to believe that while he was rushing to Lindsey to congratulate her, his tooth was knocked out, and there was no blood?  No blood?  With as long as he has been in the spotlight can his "team" come up with a better lie?  This is very reminiscent of a certain Escalade crash from back in the date.  C'mon, step up yer game. 

Great to see golf back in full effect even when they are competing with the NFL playoffs.  Both events had very different, but very exciting stories.  It was tough to see Martin Kaymer play like someone who was closing in on a club championship, but had just could not close it out.  Where did that mental toughness from the Players and going wire to wire in the US open go?  Rory looked good in his return, not that it needs to be said but I think we can all expect a big year out of him. 

Jimmy Walker proved that you don't need to be a flashy 20 something to collect W's.  I see another big year for him on the PGA tour and we saw the start of it this weekend when he defended his title.
