"Hmm?" Sterling turned to Billy as if he hadn't heard him fully. He was in the kitchen and it took a moment for his brain to process what he was asking. He pulled a knife from the block, stared at it a moment, and put it back. Instead, he got two forks from the utensil drawer and pushed it closed with his hip. "What? Buy a cake?" 'He doesn't remember?' Sterling thought, a smile spreading across his lips at the thought.

"You want me to buy you jewelry?" Sterling narrowed his eyes at him with playful suspicion. Well, he would but he doubted Sterling could pick out something that was Billy's style or taste. "It's... the anniversary of when I signed the adoption papers."

He didn't want to celebrate the day he came to live with Sterling. It felt too close to celebrating the date of the accident where his parents had been killed. No, signing the adoption papers felt happier.

"But, I mean, if you don't want cake that's fine. I just thought maybe it was something nice to celebrate. If you want."

He never wanted to overstep with Billy. Adopting a teen who just lost his parents and his memories all at once had been... challenging to say the least. He knew it was far harder for Billy. This was all new to him too and a world of tragedy and frustration. He couldn't imagine what it was like. For himself, however, it had also been incredibly rewarding. He loved being Billy's adopted father. He hoped his son always knew that.

"O-? Oh." Billy nodded. Right. Now he more properly understood. "I uh. I just forgot that was coming up..."

He smiled. "Of course I want cake. That's awesome, thanks. But now comes the most important question."

"You think someone's already taken "friendly neighborhood spider-man" yet on there?"

There was a slightly dramatic groan as Peter let his head tilt back, acting pained at the question, "Okay, first, they're not teddy bears they're Ewoks, totally different. They both live in a forest but I promise they're different. Second of all those are from the original trilogy not the prequels. The prequels are episodes one through three and came out after the original ones which are the really old ones." okay maybe it pained him just a little bit, but only a little bit, "I am so making you watch at least some of them with me now."

He smiled. "There's only one way to find out. But it might be a bit long for a handle. To be fair, I'm not super great at instagram, I mostly lurk. Oh, you need an excellent profile picture. It could be all artsy or something, like, just your hand or something? Or your symbol or something. What do you think?"

He sighed, and looked back at Peter with his mouth pursed down and to the side. Well, he should have seen this coming. "Okay, those movies are like fifty years old and I have three years of working memory. It didn't seem like a pressing issue to go and watch the not teddy bears."

"Is it nature or divine?"

"There's no time to die."

Empty, he guessed.

The memory was pushed away and he smiled as Billy laughed and listened to the explanation, "So immediately accept any possible invitations for Passover or Hanukkah, got it." he joked, "If I do though you might to have to walk me through any celebration stuff, I've never been to a celebration of either so I wouldn't know if there's something I'm supposed to do or not." he knew about the candle lasting part, and it lasting several days, but that was about it. Peter wasn't embarrassed to admit that, "And I will definitely try any cookies that you would have on hand, you know, if you needed help getting rid of them before they went bad or anything."

He chuckled a bit more. It was nice seeing someone enjoy their traditions, given that things like that had been complicated for a tiny bit. "Maybe we'll take you to a Purim festival. I'll dress you up as Hamen."

Sabrina had never dealt with changelings before, but her cousin Ambrose had told her stories about a few he'd known, and there were also stories about witches meeting themselves from alternate realms, so it wasn't like this was a completely new concept. Still, it felt like the story had a lot of missing pieces.

"You know the best way for me to know Agatha is exaggerating, is if you tell me what's going on. I mean, come on; I had to go to court against the actual devil. How bad can your thing be?"

"I'm not trying to be evasive, you know," Billy said. "But what do you want me to do? Once upon a time, there was a witch who really wanted a family!"

Billy batted his eyes, clinging his hands together in a makeshift mockery. "It's hard to explain, okay. Mostly because I've never had to explain it before, and half of what comes out of Agatha's mouth is either a lie or some kind of truth she's saying that's made to sound like a lie.

"That depends on what you did to end up on trial, because yeah, so far, you're not exactly instilling confidence in me that my thing isn't "bad" by your definition. You do realize you went against the devil in court, right? Most people would call that heroic."

"I didn't say you had to head out. Listen, Billy, you're a good kid. I trust you to close the door when you leave, alright?" He locks the door in advance, letting it swing open. He props it open with the door stop.

"Oh, like I'd ever let anything happen to Franklin," Billy insisted. He plastered on his cheesy smile, the one he often used to make people think higher of him.

“Fight, goddamn it!”

“I hate getting shot.”

“This can’t be normal.”

“What about my rights?”

“You will not be forgiven.”

“Which way’s the shower?” 

“You had to go be a dick…”

“I said, stay the fuck down.”

“You ask a lot of questions.”

“Somebody wants me dead…”

“Your body is not who you are.”

“You broke my goddamn nose!”

“Some people just need killing.”

“Let experience wash over you.”

“That’s gonna keep him a busy.”

“Who cares? We’re getting paid.” 

“He had it coming. He was rude.”

“So, this hasn’t been a conversation, it’s been an interrogation.”

“They have forgotten who and what we are… make them remember.”

“Close your goddamn mouth, or I’ll put a whole right through your head.”

“Little bit of this. Little bit of that. Blew some shit up and killed some people.”

“Is it true you can look into a person’s eyes and know exactly what they’re thinking?” 

“One thing I can promise you: coming back from the dead is a bitch. Every single time.”

“So, avoid blunt force trauma to the base of the brain, and energy weapons fired at the head.”

“So, if someone doesn’t tell me what the fuck this is all about… I might very well lose my temper.”

A genuine smile, despite the dark nature of Sterling's day prior, spread across his lips. He smiled down at his son and ruffled his hair affectionately.

"Sounds good. You sure I'm not screwing up any grand plans you had for this week? I'm not going to 'dad it up' am I? I can stay in my room. Pretend I'm not here." He chuckled.

"Ugh, dad!" Billy protested. Great. Now his curls were going to be such a mess! So much for not trying too hard chic.

‘ i don’t feel good.’

‘ get away from me.’

‘ hang on, i’ve got you.’

‘ let’s try and bring that fever down.’

‘ we need to get you warm.’

‘ i’m mad at myself.’

‘ you have to wake up.’

‘ we don’t stop fighting.’

‘ shh, everything’s okay. you’re safe.’

‘ i can’t keep my eyes open.’
