Perfect Blue (1997)
With all the talk of The Idol being terrible- especially because the series' vision and creative control was taken away from a woman and then given to two men- I want to remind people that there are better series out there that explore similar themes. If you're open to watching anime, Oshi no Ko and Perfect Blue do the whole "the dark side of the entertainment industry, especially for women" thing WAY better.
Full disclosure, I haven't actually watched The Idol but I have watched a lot of reviews/read a lot of the discourse about it and from what I understand during its production it went from being about critiquing how the entertainment industry treats women to basically being nothing but more of that same exploitation itself. Meanwhile, Oshi no Ko and Perfect Blue actually explore the psychological, emotional, and physical effects the entertainment industry has on its female stars and how dangerous it can be. I highly recommend both!
