from celestial_investments via insta, i haven’t seen anything about it here so figured i’d repost? it is incredibly appalling that SSI has remained this way for SO long. i don’t understand how the government expects disabled people to survive and thrive under this bizarre ruleset

The Orangeburg Massacre took place in Orangeburg, South Carolina at South Carolina State University on February 8th, 1968. 

An act of racism in a small Southern town led to a peaceful protest by frustrated black college students who were denied use of the community’s only bowling alley. Some of the black leaders within the community tried to convince Harry K. Floyd, the owner of the bowling alley, to allow African Americans, however he refused.

A conservative Southern governor, wanting to appear tough to his white constituents, overreacted to the civil rights protest ordering a massive show of armed force. As emotions frayed and the situation veered out of control, nine white highway patrolmen opened gunfire onto a college campus—killing three black students and wounding 27 others.

This horrific incident which ended with three young men, Samuel Hammond, Henry Smith, and Delano Middleton, killed and 27 other students wounded, was the worst example of violence on a college campus in South Carolina’s history. 

It is a part of our history, it is that one part we can not ignore, because people died in a College Nightmare. One more time black people died seeking for something white people had as granted.

“I’m out of business, I’m completely out, I’m done, I’ll never work in Columbus again,” Whitman said. “This has completely and thoroughly ruined my life.”

“I just don’t understand the intensity of the hate,” said the man who drove two miles out of his way to verbally abuse a complete stranger based on the color of his skin.

Bees! They’re great. As long as you don’t agitate them, they’re not out to get you. Only 7 species produce the honey humans use but the rest are important pollinators and deserve love too.

Meanwhile, wasps may be assholes but they’re ecologically important assholes. Hoverflies are where I see most people get confused, but they are purely beneficial and harmless. I actually had one hang out with me while I worked on this in the park.
